*Info on prostitution*
Please try to refrain from asking questions about prostitution. Japan's sex industry is almost completely inaccessible to foreigners who do not speak Japanese. What is available can generally be found in the following links
>http://rockitreports.com/category/sex-in-tokyo/
>http://erolin.net/

*Note about the JR Pass*
Many people ask about whether or not the JR Rail Pass is worth it. It depends on your itinerary.

Plug your itinerary into Hyperdia to determine ticket costs, then compare to the below JR Pass options:
>7 day Pass: 29,110¥
>14 day Pass: 46,390¥
>21 day Pass: 59,350¥

Please check the /trv/ sticky before asking questions. It's filled with links to great resources, many of them specific to Japan travel.

Been to kyoto, can confirm it sucks
Unless you're into hordes of Chinese with selfie sticks with the scattered stereotypical burger and "artsy" European blocking your view of the reconstructed diamond dozen """cultural heritage""" sites while walking past endless rows of tourists-tax eateries and stores filled with useless knick knacks the recipient of which will leave forgotten somewhere to gather dust. Mt Misen, Miyajima. Short hike, and if the stairs kill you you can take the cabkecar back down instead. Views are wonderful, and the Momijidani trail gives the opportunity to see a variety of wildlife as it follows the stream that lets out at Itsukushima Shrine up the mountain.

The overwhelming majority of the military doesn't beat up, rape, or kill Japanese nationals. So go fuck yourself.
>>
>>1247378

Right, but I didn't say that they did those things. Now, a majority of military personnel are dumb shitbags. This you cannot deny. The big fuck ups, combined with the little fuck ups (such as the pic we are discussing), has lead 7th fleet to harshly restrict liberty for these guys.
>>
>>1247379
Let me ask you a serious question, and I hope you can answer it honestly. How many military personnel do you know?
>>
>>1247373
You may run into some trouble with preparation but any burners, pots etc you need can be purchased fairly cheap.

The basic strategy is to identify group of herbivore men, and hunt the weakest in that group. It won't be too hard to do this as the lack of hygiene and presence of waifu pillows will be a dead give away.

Field dressings are more or less the same as a deer. Just do a quick google sure if you're unsure.

I'd at least experiment with some of the local spices while you're there, but if you're not feeling adventurous, just stick with what you know.

What was your rate?
>>
>>1247383
Breh scoring in any country other than yours is like .8 as difficult as it is back home. Just use and abuse the visiting foreigner angle.

Of course this only works if you're not a fugly asspie.
>>
>>1247380

Here's some highlights from the liberty policy written by com seventh fleet. This is for the LEAST restrictive tier group!

>Curfew: 1. E-5 and below - 0100 to 0500
>(b) Liberty Buddy: E-5 and below - require a liberty buddy if consuming alcohol off installation.
>(c) alcohol consumption. All service members are prohibted from consuming alcohol off installation between 0000-0500...After 0000, all service members must vacate bars and establishments whose primary purpose is to serve alcohol.

Now, there's more but you get the idea. Why would these restrictions be required if military members weren't mostly shitty?

>Recent incidents related to U.S. Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) personnel including but not limited to: DUIs; sexual assaults; and incidents of drunk and disorderly conduct; all punctuate how destructive even one individuals faulure to conduct him/herself appropriately on liberty can be to military readiness.
>>
>>1247384

You're still in? Were you not there when the crackdown on liberty happened? I was an IT on FFG 51 when it was there, then went back to Coronado to join NSWG1.

Hey guys, i have an off-topic question that I didn't want to make a new thread for

I might take a flight that leaves LAX at 9:50pm, and lands in Iceland at 1:35pm. Does this mean that almost all of the flight will be a nighttime flight? I don't like flying when its night and I'm worried lol
>>
>>1247387
It's not about military personnel being shitty, those are only put in place after a significant incident to show the host nation we are trying to curtail that behavior.

>>1247388
When I was there, the shit the happened was the reservist Navy people raped a woman in Okinawa and the lightest restriction >>1247387 was imposed. It was towards the end of my tour luckily. Which ended in 2013. There have been multiple crackdowns but they are temporary. From what I know, it is comparable to a sin wave. Everything goes well for a while and everyone is relaxed, something happens and restrictions spike for a period, it goes down and is back to normal, then some random incident happens.
>>
>>1247389
Could be, but Tokyo is a big place.
I'm gonna go ahead and say the picking aren't that slim.
Guess i'll find out when I get there.
>>
>>1247391

I get that's when the restrictions are put in place. However, they aren't going to lock down the bases just because some E-2 gaijin smashed a local custom, which you better believe happens all the time. I would have loved to stay, but the in and outs/shit liberty made me go back.
>>
>>1247392

Unless you speak Japanese, your pickings are pretty limited. So you may have to resort to going to places like Roppongi or Shibuya (where the women go to meet foreigners), but if you aren't a clubbing chad do you think you'll have a shot?

Kek, thanks anon, I'll prepare my own food then and just stick to what I'm comfortable with.
>>
>>1247394
Yea, it's a shitty part of being FDNF when it happens but it isn't a constant thing. There are tons of small time shit that happen stateside as well. We just don't have to lock down Norfolk to appease the local country. I'm on the west coast right now and going back to 7th Fleet later this year, after our deployment out there.

My first post was mostly to say that the overwhelming majority of the military doesn't do that kind of shit. We're basically a microcosm of US society (with a more male slant) and most males in the US don't ever rape anyone.

If this is still the same anon, I guess ITs are smarter than some other rates but parts of CS dept looks down on you guys.
>>
>>1247399
>the overwhelming majority of the military doesn't do that kind of shit

Sure, but there's enough to make everyone look bad. The Navy can't stop people from getting DUIs.

>>1247399
>parts of CS dept looks down on you guys.

Depends on what type of IT. ADP gets shit on, radio is where it's at. We make bank when we separate though.
>>
>>1247206
Really overrated. The girls were cute but the show itself was kinda dull.

The best part for me was this loud American woman who faceplanted on the stairs on the way out and started screaming.
>>
>>1247400
1st point - Sure, that's the same for society as a whole.

2nd point - Yea, it definitely depends. ADP seems to translate well to outside security jobs which pay a lot.

All the ITs work in Radio on all my ships (DDGs) and it varies a lot. Comms are always an issue but the post-Navy money seems to be in Network Sec.

Since I asked you and we've been going back and forth, I'm the CHENG on a DDG. Was no prior at all. Am fairly familiar with computers from building my own, but not certified in anything. The comment on CS Dept is mostly sitting TAO and hearing ETs and ICs bitching. That and comms are ALWAYS and issue. Not saying it's always a local issue though.
>>
>>1247406
>Cheng on a DDG

So what, LT? Yes comms is an issue, I was on a southpac once and we just kept losing it. Sorry guys, /shrug. Why's the cheng standing TAO anyway? Every where I've been the ETs and ITs have a mutual respect, but the ICs are looked down upon by everyone.

Are the liberty circumstances different for officers versus enlisted?
>>
>>1247409
I've only been on DDGs, figured I'd stick with what I knew as DH (to teach JOs) rather than switch to a class I was learning myself.

>>1247409
I wasn't saying comms issues are based on shitty ITs. I know there's a lot that goes into it. At the beginning of every mass/joint/international exercise I've been apart of, COMMS are an issue. That's not to say ITs in the USN are fucked, just it's a tricky spot and needs to be set up correctly on both ends. and it often isn't.
>>
>>1247409
CHENG stands TAO because I'm a SWO DH. What class of ships have you been on? Might even be different worlds.
>>
>>1247411

Do you know Steamboat Rock? Hilariously and unfortunately named engineering JO on one of my ships.

How many junior guys are getting into real relations with a local? When I was there, many wanted to meet a nice girl but didn't want to learn Japanese to do it.
>>
>>1247414
Nah, I do not know SR. There was a good mix of people getting into relations with locals, myself included though wasn't that long lasting i guess hah

My friend has a Japanese residence card (student) valid until 2018, but he hasn't enrolled in any subjects for this semester, the deadline for which was just over a month ago.

He hasn't notified immigration and getting another visa (i.e. tourist) is out of the question.

How fucked is he?

I'm trying to find out, but I'm reading conflicting information. Some say you have to notify immigration within 14 days, others say you can wait for immigration to contact you. Some say you have 30 days to leave, others say 90 days if immigration doesn't contact you. Anyone know what the real deal is here?

And is there any free/very low cost 'studying' he can do to continue living in Japan on his student visa?

I've noticed this sentiment has really gone up in the last month or so. Maybe it's a result of the summer crowd? If they were crowded in the off season then I'd hate to see them when they're actually busy.

I was there right between sakura season and Golden Week. I don't understand the meme. I think one of the guys is the pathological "Japan is boring/worst destination in Asia" troll, but I've noticed it from others too. Don't know if somebody started it and then others just kind of started parroting or what but yeah I don't get it either. The only place I found tourists to be a bit of a hindrance was Kinkakuji, which is pretty packed with SEA and Chinese--and a bunch of Japanese people. That's the thing, people like to parrot le epic Chinese tourists may may when 80% of the people you think are in your way in Kyoto are going to be Japanese being tourists in their own country. If you think it's unbearably crowded in Kyoto I can tell you unequivocally that your issue should not be with Chinese people.

Not sure if it's because I live in Japan so I don't have an added angle of feeling like my precious little time here is ruined in anyway or anything, but it's just not bad.

A lot of people do Kyoto wrong too and miss out on a lot of nice spots like Hongan-ji.

As an exception I would probably avoid Kyoto during Golden Week though. It might be a bit suffocating then.

White people with selfie sticks was my big complaint. Sooooo many white people. I just rolled out of Kyoto Wednesday (week after golden week) and crowds were still out of control.

I do love Japan and think it's a great place to travel, I was just a little grumpy constantly getting wacked by selfie sticks by clueless white people who couldn't take two steps without getting pictures. If you break away from the crowds it was pretty cool place. It just took so much work and patience compared to the rest or Japan.

Japan probably has the worst English out of all Asia, Tokyo you can get by just using very basic English and pointing most of the time.

Japan has a pretty strong fashion game, you want to dress in fairly nice clothes. If you don't have any you can stock up at uniqlo over there.

Tinder works fine, a Lot of Japanese girls are more reserved than western girls though, it's not impossible to get laid but it might take more than one date.

Most people that grew up with a fascination with Japan have already been or know someone who has. Get your friends to be very specific with what they want that they can't get, but don't expect to make any real profit off of anything you get in Japan.

However there is currently an arbitrage opportunity for the Nintendo Switch. Exchange rate makes it cheaper to buy than anywhere else in the world but you might have trouble selling it for a profit since it isn't a major difference. Something like 50 bucks

what the hell are you doing in Yufuin for 11 days? With mixed onsen, you mean the public one by the lake? Haven't been there, but if you don't care about privacy (people can see inside from the outside as far as I recall), then sure go ahead. There are proper, gender separated onsen as well though.

As far as drinking, not sure if Yufuin really has a bar scene, but sure. You could also go to nearby Beppu, that would probably be livelier

The mixed onsen will most likely be full of old folks and only old folks, if getting a glimpse of some young and virile Japanese boobies was what you were aiming for.

The folks at Barjunne, Tama-chan, Message, and Flat Iron are pretty nice for people who are drinking alone.

The JSDF guys generally just drink themselves silly in izakayas in the area and then get into fist fights outside.

I spent 5 nights in Kyoto, and was on day trips for two of my four full days. Both Kyomizu and Fushimi Inari had almost nobody there when I went, because I went right after sunrise on both days. If any other temples you want to visit are so packed with tourists that it ruins your experience, just go and enjoy the ones you can get nearly to yourself. I never passed one that was any worse than what I experienced at Toshugu in Nikko.

The entire time I was there, the only crowds I dealt with was on the main street of Gion, and the Kyoto Rail Museum in the afternoon. Only Gion's crowd was so packed as to make it bad, but the sidestreets (where all the izakayas and bars are) was empty. My later visits I walked up the river to the next bridge and it was far less crowded.

>>
>>1248252
Get a Galaxy S5. It's honestly better than any one of the newer phones. Water resistant, expandable memory, and replaceable battery. Also, buy spare battery.

Samsung fucked up with the 6, 7, and 8 by trying to be like Apple. Plus it's been out a few years, so it's cheap and all the bugs have been worked out of it. Can't say that about the 8 and its audio issues.

Not sure what you mean by that, I have the S7 Edge and it's the best gadget I've ever bought. Great camera, crisp OLED screen, fast charging, water resistant, expandable memory, fingerprint scanner and the battery is really good for a high end smartphone, they're normally terrible but I can get 2-3 days of fairly regular use out of it whereas I had to charge my iPhone almost every night.

Only negative is no replaceable battery but I don't think I've ever swapped a phone's battery in my life so that feature is wasted on me anyway.

Plus you can use Google Fi which is surprisingly good in Japan.

Plus it's right in the price range he was looking for.

i'm not seeing the plan you're talking about online. i would have hoped softbank would have a good one, as i've used them when stationed over there, but i don't see one online either
>>
>>1248320
Gave you the wrong line, get on Narita Sky Access. At Oshiage station, you stay on the train, it becomes Asakusa line from that point on. It will take you through Honjo-Azumabashi station, and then Asakusa station.
>>
>>1248326
Or, you can take the sky access to Keisei-Ueno station, get off there, and then walk to ueno-okachimachi station, which will take you to the Asakusa station on the Oedo line. The difference between Asakusa Station on Oedo line and Asakusa Station on Asakusa line, is that the Oedo Asakusa station is deeper inside Asakusa, it might be a little more convenient for you.
>>
>>1248328
Turns out I really suck at this game. Disregard my last post, if you get off at Keisei-Ueno, walk over to Ueno station. Get on the Hibiya line to Minami-Senju station. At Minami-Senju, transfer to the Tsukuba Express to Akihabara. Take the train to Akihabara, and stay on. The stop after Akihabara will be the Asakusa station to the west of Sensoji temple, the Asakusa station that is more centrally located.

Or better yet, rent a damn pocket wi-fi at Narita and use google maps instead of asking about it on a mongolian basket-weaving forum.

I'm in Japan right now. Over half of my daily budget is going towards lodging. If I didn't have that expense, I'd have literally twice as much for other experiences.

Plus, camping is enjoyable and you get a much better prospective of the town and people than you would ever get from a hotel / hostel.
>>
>>1248414
So I am looking at the resolution of the photo, and if you took that photo you have something very expensive that takes photos. You are not poor, so don't use the excuse that lodging is too expensive.

However if you think being a hobo in a town offers a better experience I guess that is subjective and your opinion.

If you have someone in Japan (such as your employer or a guarantor) to help you, it's fairly easy. If you're on your own, I've heard it can be hard to find an apartment, and I'd imagine that it would be tough getting started - knowing how and where to register with your city hall, getting an inkan, opening a bank account, setting up your bills so they're automatically withdrawn from your bank account, getting a cell phone, getting furniture, etc.

I'd love to get some good pics of the city lights at night. Is the skytree even open late at night? Is it possible to request a hotel room with a decent view even? But that would probably cost a lot more.

Guys I really need some thoughts and overall experience for this huge crossroad I'm at right now.

A dear friend came to me with this crazy idea. He wants to leave things here and move to Japan for some time and asked me if I was up to the experience.

We're both average middle-class brazilians, he's managing a restaurant with his brother and I'm a graphic design student. He makes some money, enough to live a comfy life in his 23s. I'm 21 and live with my parents, so no income whatsoever.

I've always had the dream of leaving Brazil and I'm sure one day it'll be done but I'm not sure if it's a good idea to just drop out of college and go in this crazy adventure.

We predicted we'll have money for a month there. The challenge will be to get a random job just to keep paying hostels or shit like that. We're expecting to get some random jobs here and there and exploring japan for at least a semester.

With your experiences, how do you guys think it would work out as to money, quality of life (food, entertainment, health), places to sleep and so on. Would you guys do it or have you ever done something similar?

I really want to do it but I'm legitimately scared right now. I've never travelled abroad so it would be my very first experience doing it.

Please help me think this through. I'll really appreciate it.
>>
>>1249189
Legally you're not allowed to work there on a tourist visa (3 months or so) and even if you could, you probably wouldn't get hired without a good grasp of the language.

Idk if you're in class currently, but if that's the case I would wait until the semester is over to leave. I just think it's going to be too expensive to stay for that long unless you can do graphic design jobs abroad. Finding a cheap place to stay is going to be incredibly difficult.

But I say take a break from school and go for it for as long as you can afford. As long as you have money for a return flight home, you don't have much to lose.

I actually have no clue what to do in Tokyo, what's a must see besides the usual fish market, shrine, palaces and parks? Is Kamakura nice? We'll go take a day trip to Fujigoko but other than that I just feel like walking around shopping and eating a lot, karaoke and arcades in the evening.
On the contrary I got everything about Osaka and surroundings pretty much planned out.

Also throw me some eateries in Tokyo/Osaka if you like.

Better to do Nikko as a day trip from Tokyo, or to go stay at a Ryokan to also explore the hills at night?
>>
>>1249315
I did the ryokan stay in Nikko. Splurged for a high end one. Massive kaiseki feast, massive suite with a private outdoor bath. Spent two nights there, with the full day at Toshogu for Yayoi festival, and then a half day around Lake Chuzenji.

Definitely worth it, though I was planning to spend two nights in Nikko regardless of whether I got a high end ryokan. There was some hiking I wanted to do out past Lake Chuzenji and up in the Yumoto Onsen area I didn't have time for.

>>
>>1249534
I was in Tokyo 2 years ago for 10 days from the start of July, so it was still the rain season.

I'd say yeah it's going to be pretty "bad" if you dislike rain. When I was there it would rain from the morning until some time in the afternoon and then it would stop. It would sort of dry up a little by the evening, but sometimes it rained also in the evening. When I walking outside my shoes were pretty much soaked. The sky was pretty cloudy as well.

But it didn't bother me because I like rain, so I actually enjoyed it a lot. It's still warm and humid as heck so remember that even though it's raining.

Also don't bother bringing an umbrella with you. You'll be able to buy one that's transparent for only a few hundred yen from almost anywhere. Since it's see-through and lightweight it's a lot more comfortable and handy than the umbrellas in the west.

Because there are no shinto or Buddhist places of worship in the west with hundreds to thousands of years of tradition. Shinto especially is an example of paganism that's survived well into modern times, whereas they've all been wiped out in the west. People who want to experience ancient culture first hand can get something from shrines and temples. What can you get out of a fish market?
>>
>>1249584
>Shinto especially is an example of paganism that's survived well into modern times, whereas they've all been wiped out in the west. People who want to experience ancient culture first hand can get something from shrines and temples
Who the HECK would want to experience a pagan heathen false religion?
Srsly it's so funny when people in the west mock christianity and say they're atheists, then they go to Japan for a holiday and pay to put up prayer cards to the shinto shrines. They suddenly find a new spirituality in the shinto religion while saying "God doesn't exist" to christians. hahahah hypocrites.
>What can you get out of a fish market?
Fishy stench and slimy hands. Guidebooks like Lonely Planet always frame it as something attractive to the tourists by saying "THIS IS WHERE YOU GET THE WORLD'S FRESHEST SUSHI" yet when you go and see all the dead slimy fish it makes you wanna stop eating sushi altogether
>>
>>1249583
Working holiday or students.
>>
>>1249587
I'm a Christian myself, but I just like studying different religions as a hobby, not to gain some sort of bullshit hippy "experience." There is a lot of history behind these places and I just think it's appealing to see these places that still function and see use.
>>

what kind of christian studies other religions AS A HOBBY?? Srsly I get looking up the background behind heathen religions whether it's to help in your missionary work with other cultures or just knowing what the heathen believe but WHAT KINDA CHRISTIAN looks up just for FUN!? You're not supposed to find any of that stuff appealing you know.
>>1249592
>do you think sushi is made out of live fish or something? Senpai, are you dumb?
Slimy fish is still pretty disgusting. And even if you don't think it is I still wouldn't wake up at 5am ON A HOLIDAY just to see the fish auction in Tokyo.
>>1249589
>Working holiday or students.
Should've known. Working holiday I get it, but students? what kinda students just go work for fun, cleaning tables?

Have you thought about it guys, exchange students have it so easy since none of the stuff they do will affect their grades back home. Not that I'd care about my grades anyway, but if I was an exchange student in Japan I'd skip school aaaaall the time, not do my homework or study for tests and just run around doing whatever I wanted.

All these super hardcore exchange students waste their time learning the horrific japanese work culture. Commit sudoku srsly

>>
>>1249611

yea so?
This guy was talking about finding it "appealing" how the different religions still exist and operate. As a christian myself I just find it disgusting how people are blind to the truth and instead worship satan through idols.

It's not supposed to be appealing to a true born again christian.

I think this is my favourite part about Japan. The urban environment is amazing. Im not so interested in the countryside meh, I could just get lost in all the streets in the cities though

>>1249645
I was raised in the country so I had rolling hills, lush forests and parks as my playground the city proper always irked me the people seemed dead eyed and lacked the vigor I was used to, when I moved to the states I was amazed at the diversity of the architecture, the city planning how much fun people were in general.

I'm going to tokyo for a week. Are there any places where photography is forbidden like shrines? And it's pretty much my first time travelling abroad. Almost anywhere you can't take pictures will have signs. But also don't take pictures of children, schools, inside 7eleven like stores, nor on the train of people.. or on stairs, no matter how much you want to see panties.
Your hotel will most likely have a coin machine for drying clothing. If not, just hang it up in front of your window and close the curtains. They are almost always white plastic backed so light bounces off and hits the clothing. .... So yes? to both.

bong here travelling to japan for around 3 months and a couple of questions. Firstly i have set around £7000 for the whole trip. the flight will cost around £1100 and I've set accommodation at about 700 p/m.

firstly, do you think that 565k yen is enough for me to get by on for 3 months IE travel food etc or is more needed?

secondly, would it be better to arrange somewhere to stay beforehand or wing it and hop around hostels?

my initial plan is to spend 1 month in Tokyo 2/3 weeks in Osaka and Kyoto with the remainder of my time spent travelling in between and excursions.

thanks /trv/

For a month. This apartment is in Adachi, which is the boonies of Tokyo and basically just feels like Chiba.

If you're looking for a cheap apartment in a better area, try the western suburbs on the Chuo line.

I used to live in Musashi Koganei--about 15 minutes from Shinjuku on the express train for about 55,000 a month.

The western burbs are nice, basically still Tokyo and much nicer than some places within the 23 special wards themselves (like Adachi).
>>
>>1249929
Do not do this with a credit card. As >>1250290
said, you are very limited on withdrawal amounts. If you want to look more into it for your card, look up "cash advance."

If you have a checking account with a bank, you should have a debit card with them and be able to withdraw money from your checking account. You will be charged foreign transaction and ATM fees however depending on your bank. It would be a good idea to open a Charles Schwab checking account (or Ally I think is the other big one). No minimum balance in the account to open it or keep it fee free, it automatically is. In addition, they don't charge any ATM or foreign transaction fees. I opened a Schwab account specifically for this before I left for my trip, and it saved me a decent amount of money in fees.

Never flown JAL, but from the reviews I've read their lie-flat product is pretty similar. I've flown ANA's business class 3 times, and it's always been great.

How come nobody, especially the Kyoto hater, mentioned pontoncho alley? So many places to eat or drink, it's crazy. I don't know how to tell which places are good and which aren't, or of they're all crap

I'm seeing a lot of massage joints in Tokyo. Are they typically kosher? I mean I assume the one with the massues being a hot chick in a mini skirt straddling the patient's back and offering "VIP service" isn't. but generally speaking whats the go?

Also why do my craps smell like rancid miso soup now

I did not realize it was called that. I thought it was just part of Gion. I ate there almost every night I was in the city.

Been in Tokyo for not even 48 hours and I can already tell I hate it

I sure hope the other places are better

Somewhere in the ball park of 150000 yen, depending on how lavishly you plan on living and how much expensive shit you plan on doing. Keep in mind that transportation will eat into your cost basis as well.

The girls barely acknowledge my existence, and the ones that do just look away

I thought it was easy to score here

Hey guys, so in a years time I will be going to Japan for a year. The first half year I'll be an exchange student staying in a student dorm. The second half year I’ll be doing an internship for which I have to find my own place to stay in Tokyo. The thing is, I have no idea where to start looking for an apartment for 6 months. Does anyone here have some tips and/or advice.

It'll be 3 people sharing the apartment. Thank you.

I am backpacking next week and was wondering if it's safe to leave your belongings in the hostels in Tokyo and Kyoto
