I will be working in Manteo for the whole summer. Has anyone been in this town? I imagine there is no nightlife or young people there.

But what about the rest of Outer Banks? What towns are more interesting and worth visiting? I'm really interested to learn how to surf or wakeboard, if you know any spots where to do that it would be great.

Give your general opinion on Outer Banks.

Hey OP, I lived in Georgia but spent some time up there a couple times, plus I was a history buff. Some interesting stuff for you:

>Roanoke Island
This is the site of the first English settlement in the New World. It was doing okay, so ships returned to England leaving most of the people, planning to return with supplies shortly. When they got back, every single person in the colony had vanished, and they only found one clue: The word CROATOAN carved into a tree
>Gullah Geechee
VICE News recently made a short documentary about this, I really recommend you look into it. The Gullah are a culture descended from the African slaves who worked the plantations on these islands. After the Civil War, many of their masters were killed, or they continued to work as farmers for little pay. Now there's a culture where in some places they actually live communally out of trailers and farm. They mixed with the local Natives and freed slaves, and became the Gullah Geechee Nation. It's mostly south of NC but stretches up the coast, too

There should also be some stuff to find on AtlasObscura. Enter where you'll be staying in the search bar, it'll show you cool, off-beat things to do, by their distance from you. Pretty sure there'd be great fossils around there.

Don't be ignant.

The area is a tourism magnet. And Eastern NCers have sex and reproduce just like everybody else, do I imagine there are even a few local young people there, plus of course the droves of them working in the tourism industry.

The sailboarding/kite-surfing/hang-gliding crowd at Kitty Hawk Kites is a fun group if those activities interest you. Badly-timed kite surfing pic related.

Lucky you, you are also close to the Sanitary Restaurant, a really nice southern-fried seafood establishment with the worst restaurant name of all time, since nobody ever named their restaurant the Unsanitary Restaurant.

What kind of work are you doing?
>>
>>1228663
I've been thinking about doing something like this to save money for tuition during the summers. How do you find work there ahead of time, and what sort of industry are you working in?
>>
>>1228719
Sound pretty interesting, I'll check out the documentary.

>>1228728
I'll be working as a stock clerk. Almost all jobs with the J-1 visa are not interesting, but I'll be working with a friend and I had worse jobs so whatever.

>The sailboarding/kite-surfing/hang-gliding crowd at Kitty Hawk Kites is a fun group.

I'll try these activities if I get the chance. Equipment seems pretty expensive though.

It would be great to hear more about the surfing scene around there, since I want to try it out the most.
>>
>>1228752
I'm from Lithuania and here there are agencies which specialise in helping students get J-1 visa with the Work & Travel program. We get access to a databse with employer information from different areas and we spam emails to everyone. The employers in that database have employed students before, so there is a bigger chane to get employed there.

Basically, you can apply to any seasonal job, but the employer must be verified by a sponsor in the US (for example, Intrax, InterExchange, ICEO). It's a longer proccess and most employers don't want any of it.
>>
>>1228756
Oh yeah, I've heard that that place is full of Eastern Europeans. I live in the US, do you think that there are so many workers from overseas that it will be hard for me to get a job?
>>
>>1228759
I think it's even easier if you live in the US. Just send as much emails as you can to all the restaurants, shops, hotels you can find and I think someone will offer you a job. I sent about a 1000 emails.

Most of the students from Europe already have jobs though.

>surfing scene

Straight up surfing is pretty lame compared to real surf venues -- the waves can be as good there as anywhere on the Atlantic seaboard... but that is not saying much. Kite surfing is phenomenal.

Harris Teeter?

Gonna be staying up in Corolla in June. Love the obx. Just make sure you have plenty of windshield wiper fluid on the drive, getting there requires driving through a lot of swamps and farmlands and you may get really unlucky and drive through several swarms.

Spent a weekend in Nags Head last year. Farm dog, surf school/coffee shop, you'll stand up first try. Swing by jockey ridge park for a sunset in the dunes, pic related, Manteo is on the other side of the water. Grabbed pizza in Manteo looked like a sleepy beach town. Didn't do any night life, we brought our own party. Bug locals when you get there
>>
>>1229342
I'll learn how to surf there for sure then

So what are your plans if a category 5 hurricane is headed straight for you? Make sure you got the resources to get a plane ticket home if your employer gets destroyed.
>>
>>1229706
Hurricane season doesn't start until late summer. And odds are way low of a direct hit.
>>
>>1229628
Cool just keep your expectations low when you start, and understand that you aren't going to be carving all over the place. They'll set you up with a wetsuit and you'll cruse in a straight line on a thick ass longboard for awhile. You can rent boards from them too if you're interested.
>>
I was born in Ocracoke and lived there and around OBX (Kitty Hawk, Nags Head, etc) until I was 7. It's amazing in a very unique way, I wonder what Ocoke is like now. It was so isolated back then, you had to take a ferry to get to a real grocery store. OBX has lots of tourism and things to do actually, and of course the beaches are beautiful. My uncle and I used to go metal detecting there all the time and found some really cool artifacts, if you're into that kind of thing.
>>
I'd say the Outer Banks is more of a place to relax than party.
>>
>>1229865
New York City has been hit by hurricanes. Sandy was big but not the worse. That was the 1937 Long Island express, cat 3.
>>
>>1229865
I've lived in SE NC my whole life, been through over 40 hurricanes/tropical storms. There's no way I'd stay on the Outer Banks if one's coming. They issue mandatory evacuations. If you ignore the evacuation order by hiding in your house from the police when they knock on your door then you're on your own. If the storm surge rises high enough you'll have the ocean pouring into your house, waves of water hitting your walls, with 130+ mph winds. Emergency crews will not attempt to rescue you during the storm if you stay on the island, even if your cellphone is still working and you call 911. So yeah, OP should have an evacuation plan and a "my overseas employer's business was destroyed" plan.

Many good suggestions already. Areas like Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head are all where you'll find the Party-ing Crowd.

Beaches are great, water can be very warm, lifeguards don't give much of a shit about drinking as long as you're not being completely unreasonable. There's tons of rental and lessons for any kind of recreational sport, and it's relatively inexpensive (download Groupon and find some deals).

If you're into Beer at all, check out a tour of Weeping Radish Brewery. It's back on the main land but not very far and very, very unique. The brewmaster is a german immigrant and the tour is focused more on the ups and downs of establishing the brewery.

I vacation in Duck a lot, more of a locals-beach, very, very cozy. Scarborough Faire is a neat shopping area and the BBQ place there is fantastic. Duck also has a long boardwalk on the bayside with lots of good food and pizza. Ocracoke is a good day trip, white-beach sands, etc.

This. Hurricanes do hit, and they hit hard. Don't be foolish.
