For a while, I've been fantasizing about running away to a Buddhist temple/whatever for a buncha months to work on a farm/whatever in exchange for group meditation time, dorming, and food. I'm going to be spending the next 7 months in Europe (starting in Spain) doing whatever the fuck.

Any ideas on where/how to find a Buddhist Temple w/ this description.

I'm familiar w/ wwoof, but no luck thus far. Any other resources if you don't have specifics in mind?

So you don't have money?

I'd rather not spend a whole bunch.
>>
Where are you from? And why are you looking for Buddhist temples in Europe?
>>
Semi related, but what does one actually do when Buddhisting at a Buddhist Temple? I hardly believe it's the romanticized view us westerners have. Anyone have any experience at a real one that isn't just cashing in on the fad?
>>
Only kind of Easterner philosophy monastery you will find in Europe doing anything like that are gonna be cults and even they have it hard because Europeans aren't big on cults (except political personality cults ofc). Asian countries have tons of just regular monasteries where you can enlist as a monk (ex. in Thailand) but then you actually have to stay there and be a proper Buddhist monk, unless you go to a pseudo monastery where you pay to stay and do whatever.

If you become a monk in Thailand, you're expected to devote to the monastery, shave your head, live under strict discipline, recite chants, get alms, etc. Kinda like the military but not fun.

Hey OP, just started my military service but I've been thinking similar when I'm done, monastic life is basically boot camp for your mind.

>wake up at 0500
>small breakfast of oat meal
>meditation and chanting for an hour
>work for 3 hours
>short break
>more work, then group meditation
>small lunch
>work more, then meditate, possibly go into town or to teach at a center or volunteer in the community
>sleep then repeat

There's one in California. I'd recommend you really check the reviews online, most temples (especially run by westerners who trace their roots back to a westerner) are new age and not so much Buddhist. It's a lot of work. Ones an Thailand, Cambodia and SEAsia are basically slave dens. No meditation, all work.
