this
I was so excited about traveling with work the first time (european traveling in europe), and thought it'd be awesome and was planning all these things
turns out you just take a different commute to work, you work 8 hours in a completely different environment that you need to get used to in a day, which is horribly tiring
then you get out, it's like 18:00 already, and then you have to figure out what the fuck to eat and where and how to get there
>b-but sightseeing
barely any time because fucking tired after work
I mean it wasn't that bad, but it is by no means an almost vacation like I thought initially
having hotel and cabs payed for is nice tho
>omfg anon you went <there> and you didn't see all those <things to see there>
no fucking dumbass I was there for fucking work not for tourism

What's wrong with it? You can go sightseeing during the day and do all that shit and at night go get drunk and fuck a new foreign girl every night.
It's a ton of fun and you actually get the experience of travelling too

Besides there are a lot of people on trv who travel for many reasons and a lot of the time when you say you are going somewhere like Japan, China, Russia, Europe or something. People will hear it and ask the same questions over and over where it gets really repetative and can be annoying.
Not to mention a bunch of people on a weeb image board probably have a lot different tastes that your average person
>>1192138
I always just think "good for them, not for me" that way I feel I become less judgemental of other people's choices/tastes. Also I try not to ask obvious questions when people talk about traveling

>>1192023
That's me. I'm awful at telling a story verbally.
That and walking around simply absorbing the atmosphere of a new place is really one of my favorite things.
>>1192150
I don't mind people who ask me if I had fun, but sometimes me not sharing everything I did on a journey doesn't mean I didn't do anything. Telling someone you are going somewhere sometimes leads into people asking every question under the sun in regards to things you did.
It just gets tiring because more than not there are people who DON'T get the hint of "hey not trying to tell every detail I did"
>>1192150
>good for them, not for me
see, you barely hear stuff like this on other boards
I've been trying to think the same for a while now, and I feel much better. Also prevents you from getting worked up about stuff you disagree with. As long as it doesn't directly bother other people, w/e, everyone can do whatever they feel like and makes 'em happy
>>1192176
That's a sign you should practice a bit your small-talk/bullshit-normie-talk. It was the same at work for a while, and eventually I realized that they're fine with the bullshity standard answers like yea went there and there (obvious places and 1 not-so-popular), ate some stuff (local and 1 somewhat strange), and then tell them something that confirms the ideas they already have, some stereotype or so
The ones that actually are interested ask better questions anyway
At the end of the day, you should just give less of a shit what most people think about you(r travels)

within europe i found it easier to sneak out for an hour to just see the city where i'm at, the americans just had cray cray work hours.
>>1190739
Because there is a difference obviously. Any pussy can go on a tour, but it takes balls to travel for real. Especially solo.
Check out a neighbour thread about a guy travelling in Africa by bike.
>>1192047
>then you get out, it's like 18:00 already, and then you have to figure out what the fuck to eat and where and how to get there
Lack of experience. Looking up a fab amazing dinner can take not even 10 minutes of research, and a couple offhanded questions from anyone during the day, such as a concierge, fellow plane passenger, flight attendant, coworker, taxi driver, gate agent, anyone. Snatching the experience after work isn't that much different than going to dinner in the evening in your own hometown. You can see alot of a city at night just from the window of your taxi to and from the dinner choice, and a short little walk to a "view" or simply try to dine somewhere with a view. I dare say just asking the question somewhere might even get you an invite.
Being somewhere utterly in the midst of suburbia might make for some more mundane choices, or being on some kind of budget where you don't have a rental car for a larger trek or paid transport might make it not "worth it" but if you travel somewhere, you shouldn't just say being tired is your obstacle if you're done at 18:00.>>1192047
>no fucking dumbass I was there for fucking work not for tourism
This would be only true if you were stuck in some plant in operations during some kind of IT shutdown until they came online, and no where else between your flights. You may not have a weekend to explore museums, or hike mountains, but you fit in something. Flight crews manage to get shit done in 1-3 hours and certainly don't only hang in airport inns by the pool and bar, and especially because they return over and over to the same cities.

you're quite right, anon; I guess this just proves how inapt I am sometimes if I rarely even think about that possibility, but I guess I'll try to do that more often; to me the mindset is unfortunately more like "you're alone and you have to figure it out by yourself"
derp
but yea I mean most of the post was irrational ranting over fairly specific cases, it's of course nicer to travel for work than...not travel at all
>>1192891
yuropoor here, never been to the states, but everyone that's ever worked there (mainly on the east coast, nyc etc) have said that on average everyone just revolves around work life and that's it, the hours are retarded and works is your entire life, some of 'em barely have time for lunch
but anyway, besides the thread's topic
>>1193002
what's wrong with staying at hotels? or is this one of those RealTravellerâ„¢ things?
sarcasm aside, it's a matter of preference; if you don't want to interact too much with other people where you're staying, hotels are much better and comfier, nice and quiet
I've stayed at hostels a few times and it wasn't that great on average, it's a bunch of young ignorant drunk people that think the world revolves around and are horribly loud and obnoxious
there's also cool chill interesting people at hostels, but it's too much of a gamble for me most of the time
Well, I don't have friends, so I don't have anybody to talk about traveling beside some few relatives and co-workers.
- "Did you do that"
- "Yes, I did"
- "It was cool?"
- "Yes"
- "..."
- "Please, don't ask if I have kissed someone, please don't ask..."
- "Ok, Anon, see you later".
>>1193648
>some of 'em barely have time for lunch
US only requires 30 minutes for lunch. And as adults most friends are met through work. We have 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, work schedules. Average of maybe 2 weeks vacation days a year. Normal for us, but I know how it looks to Europeans. Americans see most Europeans as lazy. Germany probably has just as liberal work policies as the rest of Europe, but they escape the stereotype
>>1192027
>travel for work

For me it's usually like this:
>go to a country
>spend a significant amount of time there
>visit most of the main sights
>get a cultural experience or two
>meet a few nice fellow travelers
Come back home and meet someone who's been there and hear this:
>Oh, you went for 7 weeks? I could only handle 1 week there haha

>This place I went to was the best (the one place I didn't go to cause everyone said it wasn't good)

>Drink with everyone after hours

Going somewhere safe but interesting does not make you a pussy, the hell is wrong with you. And spending a fortune on taxis or hours on the bus to get somewhere remote does not mean you have balls if a tour will take you right where you want to go for less money. It just means you are so far up your own ass you would rather waste time and/or money than lower yourself to going on a tour.
