So.......New York or L.A.?

Well, of all the major cities in California, L.A. is not a good one for tourism. Seriously.
If you had said SF or NY...well, someone could compare pros and cons of your interests.
LA to live. Manhattan to visit.
NYC, more to offer a tourist in my opinion

Dude SF is boring as shit. As for OP, NYC hands down.
Depends on what you're looking for, honestly.
Both cities have world-class amenities (in just about any area you're looking for), a level of sophistication only found in big cities (it's laughable to rate SF or DC over either, for example), as well as their own, unique, city-specific character.
As a general rule, NYC is more "status" oriented, while LA is more "trendy", with exceptions of course. Many people own places in both and jump between the two.
You can't really go wrong with either, be it visiting or living, but both cities were way better in the 90s desu
t. LA native who visits NYC frequently and knows it better than any other city outside LA

What parts of LA are actually worth spending time in? Its so big. i have little interest in seeing the hollywood sign or generic tourist stuff

Anywhere on the Westside (Beverly Hills, Malibu, Hollywood Hills, etc) is awesome. The shopping, food, events, people watching, etc. are all top notch.
The theme parks like Disneyland, Universal Studios, Six Flags, etc. are mostly full of tourists, but they are all top tier. If you're more into natural activities, you can hit up the beach at Malibu (the further west you go, the less crowded), go hiking at Runyon Canyon, or take the ferry to Catalina Island, amongst others.
Despite all the tourist traps, Hollywood still has some pretty fun clubs and shopping and such, if you're into that. Eastside/Downtown is "hip" but full of transplants(I only really go for basketball games). The San Gabriel Valley is cool if you like a true cultural experience (It's probably the biggest and most authentic Chinatown in the USA).
The Greater LA area is probably the most interesting metro area in the US, so you could spend a whole week here and still not run out of things to do. Definitely bring a car though.

San Diego is my favorite city in the US. Go to a Padre's game, go see the Midway, go to Green Flash, Ballast Point, and Stone (liberty station) breweries, go to the Zoo, go to Pacific Beach, eat at the hundreds of incredibly good restaurants.

NYC is not status oriented, the vast majority of people here are not rich and don't care about that shit

NYC has more to offer a tourist but i wouldnt recommend living there, everyone is a fucking asshole. i assume the same about LA
>>1159220
They aren't all assholes. New Yorkers just have shit to do and when tourists are crowding up in bunches in the middle of a block, people are gonna get a bit peeved. Tourists aren't used to how we act, but that doesn't mean we're assholes.

Id rather assholes that gets stuff done than politically correct sensitive wet blankets
