I've always advocated formal study, with a real teacher, to cram the fundamentals into your brain, before attempting immersion, conversation partners, or just binging on media.

This is particularly useful in Russian (one of six languages I can speak with some proficiency), because the case system requires you to memorize a lot of different forms--all nouns and adjectives can have six or more endings depending on how they're used. Verbs are more complex than in many languages, too, because of something called aspect, which isn't so clearly distinguished in English--in essence, there are two forms of all verbs, each with their own conjugation pattern, to mark differences in something that resembles but is not tense (it's actually more about the degree to which an action is completed).

When you know the basic concepts and forms, it's easier to immerse yourself or pursue conversation partners/other means. But it's easy to enforce bad habits or reinforce mistakes without qualified help.

Why it's should to work?

Honestly, Duolingo and watching Russian TV will work for traveling purposes. If you want to actually live there then just study a grammar book too.
