Big island always.

Any more details for this?
I would recommend the big island and Oahu. Oahu is more touristy but it has just about everything. If you go to Oahu and go to the north side, make sure to stop by Matsumoto's. Best frozen ice I've had. I've been to this island the most and would definitely recommend going to.
The big island I've only been to Kona and Hilo for a day each. I remember liking Kona but I think I just went around shopping. Hilo, I went to the volcano park which was cool (but might have the two mixed) .
Kauai is pretty rural but I enjoyed it. Mostly good for hiking and kayaking. I stayed two days here.
Maui I didn't care for but seems like the island everyone goes to. only stayed a day.
I haven't been to the other islands so I can't comment on those. Hope this helps you out.

Please read the sticky, particularly the part about how slow /trv/ is -- it is not quite as slow as it was when that was written, but a once-a-day bump is still more than adequate.

How long are you traveling? The Big Island definitely has plenty to do in the volcano national park alone. A lot of fantastic hiking trails. I loved Maui, a great variety of terrains and places to explore--waterfalls, dry plains, rocky mountains, grassy hillsides, craters, bamboo forests, etc.
Depends on what you want to do. Oahu is the tourist hub, but the north side there is awesome.
Maui is also very touristy with lots to do. Hana highway, kaanapali, etc
Been to Kauai and that's my favorite by far. Not as much to do, but the scenery and general laid back Hawaiian lifestyle is all around you at all times. Truly amazing. Must see the na Pali coast and Waimea canyon.
Can't comment on big island or others
Depends on what you're for. Touristy stuff or just a place to get away from crowds? I chose the latter and vacationed here in the Big Island. Ended up being best choice of my life. Ended up living here. If you decide the Big Island then AMA.

How many days is enough to see the main sights of the big island?
I have 10 days in Hawaii coming up, flying in and out of Honolulu. I'm thinking of going to the Big Island for either 3 or 4 days but I also want to spend enough time on Oahu to see what they have there...

Shave ice it is.
I'm going to book my ticket to the big island tomorrow. Is it mandatory to rent a car there or is it possible to get to some places from Kona by some sort of transport?

Don't do this. It's a trick, you'll end up paying a shit ton to get your taste buds raped.
It's not worth it man.

What?
Anyone know if the Haiku stairway is accessible these days?

This.
Except the shave ice. It's expensive ice with soda syrup poured on it.
Definitely book a car or bike! Just be aware many rental cars don't like you taking the car up the mountain, but without a car you're stuck in kona with only expensive taxis to get around.
