Do you have access to a car? If so, you have to go to google maps and put in Hood River as your destination. About 2 hrs from Portland. It is a beautiful place, as the river cut the Columbia River Gorge. There are wineries all along it.

The biggest problem is namely rent. It's a problem not unique to portland but it's just exuberant at this point.
