I think this board is best to ask my question. I was born in Berlin and often hear that many tourists come here and many people from all over the world actually move here to live here because of the reputation of the city. But what exactly is this reputation? I hear in the news that many young people from Israel move here, "creative people", we have now the highest number of inhabitants since 1944. I like my city for what it is but I never thought so many people would choose it over Paris, Rome, Budapest or whatever. Especially the tourists. I know we are the greatest brothel in Europe but that shouldn't explain all visitors. So what is your opinion on Berlin and what do people in your country think?

From my perspective, Berlin is popular because of the history it holds and how recently it was affected. I think the other attraction is it's perceived as safe compared to the eastern block, and has strong indications of the difference between east and west in a small space.

I'm going with friends late august and we're going to visit lots of the 'touristy' areas and it's just a cheap and easy, plus I've wanted to go back for quite a while now.

Do you recommend anything that people may not really know about in Berlin?

There is actually much "people do not know about" here ;-) Are you interested in something special? Partys, theaters, museums, street festivals, quite places to chill? cheap or expensive? Where have you been last time already? And can you give me a somewhat more specific date?

Berlin is a pretty nice city overall. Got a bit of everything, though it wouldnt be my top european city go visit, at all. Probably not even top 3 in Germany.

great pills and great clubs

also, home of the nazis

>home of the nazis
You must be mistaken. That's Munich.

Berlin is the home of the commies and antifa

I live in Western Poland, so Berlin is the closest European capital for me.

The history, the places, each time I go there, I find something new to visit/see.

Also, my ex-gf loved the city, so we spent quite a lot of time there.

I used to live there, about 10 years ago.

Berlin to me is (was) an adult kindergarten. Flowing over with sex and drugs. And even at 3am on any sunday night, the streets are full with jolly drunk and stoned people., And, despite what the pol trash might hint at, Berlin is one of the safest cities in the world. I spent years there, so I know. Even the riot police treat rioters relatively humanely during the Maientage.

At the end of the day, this shit works cause Germans really are some of the best people of the West (along with some Scandis and neighbouring people). There is still a layer of solidarity with your fellow man, somewhere.

Its a white people hipsterish city. Very nice historic stuff to see and museums, nice food, cheap, people are very civilized. Also very very few non white people compared to Paris for exemple which makes the city safe.

Me and my girlfriend went there on a little trip not really knowing what to expect. Was pleasantly surprised.

Many people say East Berlin is full of Nazis but that's so not true. We have many foreigners in East Berlin, many Vietnamese due to socialist times, many Russians, you can also find muslims here and Some Black people who even have families with whites and I often here Spanish in public transport. It would be in fact more likely to get attacked by a drunk left extremist or stabbed by a turk than to meet Nazis here.
>>

How can you say niggers or Muslims are in any way positive?

Berlin is a better Prague and Prague itself is widely considered to be pretty okay.
Also what the other guy said about it being a "civilized" city, that's pretty spot on. Harder to appreciate when it's your standard since birth, obviously.

the straend festival is 20th august so you will miss it. You will also be too late to get a look at the maya collection that the Mexicans exhibit here.
Well you can find the stuff in the center by yourself I guess so I give you some hints what isn't in Mitte, Friedrichshain, Charlottenburg etc
If you are into historic stuff you could visit the old prison for political prisoners in Alt-Hohenschönhausen http://www.stiftung-hsh.de/homepage-2 It is near the Obersee and Orankesee where many high SED members had their houses so if you go there you could also take a look at this place. If you take the S7 to the west you can visit Potsdam. In times of Frederick the Great it was kind of Prussia's second capital. Schloss Sannssauci is located there where he is buried with his 2 dogs. Potsdam also has Babelsberg film studio, world's oldest large scale film studio and largest in Europe. in the villafe Caputh there is Einstein's old house but it only opens on weekends. http://www.einsteinsommerhaus.de/index.php?id=458&L=2&L=1
In Berlin the Naturkunde Museum has a T-Rex and a brachiosaurus, near the technikmuseum there is the spectrum that has kind of interactive experiments, we have museums for almost everything.
Something else you can't see because it reopens in September is the Friedrichstadtpalast which has the world's largest theater stage and you should totally go there on your 3rd visit. The shows are incredible with the mass coreography and stage technology and costumes I am always completely flashed when I am there. In the end of the show the girls form the longest kickline in the world. I found a trailer for the last program but it doesn't have the same effect as if you see it live https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8Q5hud9ec8

It has a reputation among artistic types for being a great city for creative people. Vibrant scenes, and quite affordable for a major European center. I know that at least as recently as a few years ago living and studio spaces cost not much more than half what they would in New York or San Francisco (American here, have artsy friends who moved there from these cities).

And to go along with the adult kindergarten comments above, it's long been a leading global player for electronic music/dance clubs. I don't care about that stuff, but one of my aforementioned friends, who moved there from San Francisco, did so to make techno.

There's also the 20th century history appeal of the place--the Iron Curtain ran right through town!
