Get bored after you realise everything you heard about Amsterdam is a lie and everything looks the same and the city can be seen in half a day.

dutchfag here, amsterdam is fun if you like history and art. That's it. The orginal spirit of amsterdam is dead and its one huge shoppingmall.

When would you say Amsterdam died? Can you round it to a decade?

Here in the US we can say the dream of the middle-class died in 1980.

Rent a bike Scott

Leave Amsterdam and be thankful you don't have to go back

Depends on what you're into.

The Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh museum and Stedelijk Museum are amazing if you're into art. Maybe the filmmuseum in trendy Amsterdam North?

The boat tours are a cliche, but they're great. The architecture see and the history you hear on them is a great foundation for your trip. Also, look into booking one that includes a diner cruise through the canals.

Rent bikes and cycle. Get out of the touristy center. It's relaxing and a great way too enjoy architecture and the many parks. Vondelpark and Westerpark for example.

Keep in mind that for every great restaurant in Amsterdam there's 15 shit ones. Do your research. Also try typical Dutch foods. Pancake Bakery is kind of famous. Also try street foods like haring and stroopwafels.

If you want to see some (mildly staged/fake) insight in Dutch culture like cheese making, clog making and windmills, check out Zaanse Schans.

For cheese there's Edam and for fish Volendam.

Some markets are nice, but have lost authenticity. Try the Albert Cuypmarkt or the flowermarket.

Neighbourhoods like Jordaan and De Pijp offer more authenticity. Also an area called The Nine Streets offers many small independent shops and eateries. Big tip.

If you like alcohol, avoid the Heineken experience and visit Bols (Jenever) or the Ei brewery instead.

People who hate Amsterdam just don't know where to go.

Almere; zero history, zero atmosphere, one of the ugliest places in The Netherlands.
