There's two of us cycling from Helsinki to Nordkapp
>ferry to NL
>drive a van to DE
>ferry to LV
>leave van at a garage for repairs
>bus and a ferry to Helsinki
>cycle the crap out of FI and NO
>arrive at Nordkapp
>whatever goes on the way back
At least that's the plan. Last year I had a thread where I recounted some of my experiences of a cycle/hitchhike across Europe. This time something different. I'm here.
>>
Do you actually bicycle a fat tire?
How many miles a day do you do?
Honestly sounds awesome. Do you blow your budget on all the extra calories you have to eat?
>>
Do I need to inform the highway patrol if I'm going to bike from one state to another in the USA? I was told that I needed to state my intentions to the police. I checked google, nothing related was available.
>>
>>1113096
You just need to tell them your average speed so that they'll know how far too lead you when they shoot you with their bullet guns.
>>
>>1113080
No fat, just a random snow picture. I don't expect it on the road though.
>attached a photo from our 360km weekend test ride
>>
is going to happen this summer or when? i'm from finland and i had a plan to cycle from the southernmost tip of finland to nordkapp later on this year, most likely starting in late july

Not sure how to solve the 4000cal per day problem with Finnish prices yet. I have 2.5kg of sunflower seeds- bought from amazon. That's a start I guess.

That's about 98% accurate.
Bikes are Ribble (both, coincidence) audax bikes with rear pannier racks. Will post pics of them when we set off
>>
>>1113721
Pretty sure they're still asleep. That's one of the reasons we're going in May not later. Can someone from north confirm this? We might be screwed if the zoomers are on the hunt.
>>
>>1113729
Much obliged, anon. Would like to do some bike travel as well in the future, so this is good info.

Anyway, would love to see how your endeavour goes, do post updates!

Yeah I live in northern Finland and I've seen a total of 2 mosquitos so far. They'll be awake come June I think. But it won't get bad before July. Hard to say.

If I was going to cycle all the way up to Nordkapp I'd go through Eastern Finland. Beautiful lakes and scenery there, the western coast on the other hand is completely flat terrain and mostly just farm fields, although beautiful in it's own way as well. East is where the wilderness is at.
>>
>>1113729
I'm biking John o groats to lands end this summer, all this equipment, how much bag/bike space would it take up?

Thank you anon
>>
>>1113812
east is hilly as fuck after the lakes and the roads are in quite atrocious condition

Troubles with electronics, but we're moving well
>>
Ferry to Liepaja was OK, tons of oldschool Latvian/USSR food and truck drivers. Left the van like was planned. In Finland chose to go eastern. So far mostly on the main roads, mostly pretty quiet. Tomorrow morning will have breakfast in Kuopio. Solar charger stopped working, now just being stingy with battery powered stuff.

Yesterday did 230, bit too much for my bitch ass. Now in Kuusamo, but cycling is as hard as ever. Probably not reaching arctic circle today, although we easily could've- just thought I'm hot shit yesterday.

Nothing to see, just two homosexuals on a trip with matching rented bikes.

Arctic circle today, come on

Noice, did you guys manage to miss the rain? I've cycled in Lapland for quite some time so I know that some of the roads can be in a pretty bad condition, especially in eastern lapland

Don't think we did. Just mass amounts of reindeer and an odd moose here and there.

Yesterday one of the tyres got so square and think we got a blowout. Just a repair on a coastline that could've easily been at Spain

I had two 28 litre panniers with 3-season bag hanging from the aerobars. Tent and sleeping mat between the panniers. Easily enough space, had a bunch of useless crap with me too and was still comfortable packing most of the time

Is that a dota reference, by chance?

Thanks for the list!
how many kilograms?

omg, why?
Take just a international SIM to keep in touch with your parents and close friends.

(imho) pro tip: speaks with locals, not with your gf at home!:)
>>
>>1118907
I just started using it at home. Took it so all our phones can share the same data plan and avoid buying multiple SIMs for every country. It worked in NL and DE, but not in Scandinavia so a waste, sadly.
>>
>>1118888
It is
>>
>>1113730

It's been really warm now so they might come early, who knows. They are the worst and I can't imagine how bad it is if you aren't used to them. But it's usually not that bad in June.
>>
>>1118913
Definitely it has to be useful but I fear that with an access to internet a traveller loses something... I don't know what, maybe the will to speak with the locals, a immersion in the new country.. I don't know. I just know that I would never take with me a box for internet.
Anyway, do you know how many kg you carry on your bike?

Good trip mate!;)
A bycicle traveller newbie.
>>
>>1119134
Haven't weighed all the crap, not even the bike itself. How does that matter? You take what you believe is needed, leave the rest. Then push the pedals down until you can lift feet off the ground. Can tell you, however, that the weight for 25mm tyres was probably bit too much. Bought new Contintental Grand Prix 4 Season tyres, the rear one is now slightly square after only 1700km. Pumped it just above max pressure too, never seen this happen with a tyre over 10 days. My colleague's tyre blasted out a hole on the last day (even more square than my rear), had to be replaced.

About the WiFi box- there's a certain image coming to my mind when someone says "speak with the locals" and I would like to take a small detour here and detach myself from this trip. Just like my trips, these are just ideas and shouldn't be tied back to people I might or might not have any connection with.

The box itself is tiny (pictured), no bigger than half of a modern smartphone and it's limitations and best uses are still to be found out. As mentioned previously, couldn't get it working for 90% of the trip so not much was learned, but the ease of access to information can't be undervalued. Whether it's looking up simple phrases in a foreign language or tips on how to deal with sore throat when you only have broccoli and olives at hand. I don't want to talk to people. They're a backdrop of a country measured in grains of sand, rapeseed fields and traffic signs. "The locals" have sand in their sandals and fields of their crop at the backs of their heads, painted there by the sowing of the seed- a product of the environment. As such they are to be appreciated and approached as fellow humans, but my trip is something that takes (or should, in my view) on a form of a thing different and hopefully strange- to myself and others. The trip is the ancient coldness of rocks against your feet, the wet moss pushing out the grease of your pot, the sharp pain of saddle sores. The fewer people I see, the more I see myself in their eyes as something strange. And the best I can hope for is the inability to recognise myself in their or my own thoughts while returning to myself at will endlessly.

Check the bike pedals. You don't get far with those if you don't have shoes to match.
