Is Denver becoming one of the world's great cities?
>>
>becoming
>>
>>1112995
Only among stoners.

If it develops a global advantage in something important, sure. Even the ganja is not often produced locally, it's just imported from California or British Columbia.

But it has the advantages of a beautiful setting, outdoorsy stuff, and strong second-tier food and booze options. Many people like that more than the stuff you can find in real great global cities.
>>
Denver is definitely relevant on a national level. Not sure about international level, though. Most globally-relevant cities that are not capital cities are typically not far from the ocean.

Denver is not even in the top 5 city in USA

Denver is so irrelevant that this is a picture of Salt Lake City and nobody noticed

St.louis is the gateway to the west, that what the gateway arch represents since it was included with the Louisiana purchase. That's historically speaking and stl will alway have that history/nickname. But into days standards its not even close to what we describe as the west

Denver's pretty alright but it's still in flyover country.

I go to Denver multiple times a year and it is boring as shit unless you're super into outdoor activities in the mountains. There's not much in terms of night life or anything to really do or experience outside of eating and drinking. Real estate prices are also pretty fucked too due to the large population growth. It's like paying Cali prices to live in a place not nearly as fun or relevant.
>>
>>1112995
I think you mean overpriced.
>>
>>1113145
Yeah and I'm sure conservacuck wastelands are just magnificent places to live, right?
>>
>>1113244
Eating and drinking is awesome. So are mountains. What the fuck do you expect from life?
>>
>>1113506

Don't get butthurt he gave an honest assessment. I went to college and worked in Denver and it is boring if you don't like outdoor activities. I live on the east coast and there is much more to do and you can drive 30 minutes and be in another big city. He's also right about real estate prices going full retard. Denver is definitely not even close to being a worlds greatest city and most people (besides the huge and fast growing foreign population) don't move there for the city it's for the outdoor activities like skiing, hiking, fishing, plus high altitude so there are very few annoying bugs to bite you while you enjoy nature. I think the fad of moving to Colorado will die out soon due to a combination of low wage jobs and ridiculous prices.
>>
>>1113012
>Even the ganja is not often produced locally, it's just imported from California or British Columbia.

Why did you make that up?
Its not even legal to transport across state lines much less international ones.
I america, all the legal pot comes from the state it was produced in.
There is no interstate THC commerce.
>>
>>1113513
weed and the rocky mountains sounds good to me bruh
>>
>>1113506
>What the fuck do you expect from life

How about good options for food later than 9pm?
How about some sort of social scene that isn't just a bunch of bearded flannels and REI lifers?
How about some relevant museums and art galleries?
How about a selling aspect other than DUDE WEED LMAO?

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the place. It's just not nearly as awesome as the locals claim it is.
>>
>>1113043
In terms of technology and innovation, no way. San Francisco at this point is going to be ground zero for innovation for all of our life times. In terms of quasi-spiritualism and pseudo-religion, sure.

The city is pretty much nothing but working poor and a few skilled workers. There are no worthwhile jobs unless you're highly educated. Never seen anything like it. Most major cities have the homeless hitting you up for money, but I didn't really see any of them. Just shit tons of visibly poor people. Seemed pretty shit to me

>>
>>1114017
Silicon Valley is definitely in the lead. A distant second is Seattle. Then there is another gap, with cities like LA, Portland, Salt Lake City, and Denver vying for a place on the list. Being a quick flight from SFO does help, since that is were all the major venture capital firms are headquartered. These are just the cities in the Western half of the US, I don't know much about the east. I hear NYC pays well in tech fields.
>>
>>1113513

>moving to denver
>tfw everyone thinks I'm a weed tourist
>I don't even like weed

I really hate this shit. I kind of wish they hadn't legalized it because all the potheads are going there... I'm going for the weather and hiking. Why do potheads have to be so obnoxious about it?

>>1114144

NYC pays a bit better, but the rent is double anywhere else so even white collar professionals can be poor there.

East coast is boring and humid. Just night life and immigrants.
>>
denver's nice to visit, just spent a week there, but it's far from being one of the "world's great cities". it's just too limited. it's kinda like inland portland, imo. though it was awesome with a 16 month old-natural history museum, aquarium, zoo, mellow but amazing food options, and we didn't care about staying out later than 8.
>>

>>
>>1115987
An airport doesnt mean your city has relevance. Denver is right in the middle of the country so it's a good place to stop.

People dont talk about New York's fucking airport you desperate twat.
>>
>>1116312
Plus the airport is 40 minutes outside the city with no public transportation connected to it besides a fucking bus
>>
>>1116312
JFK and Laguadia ?
they sure as shit do talk about them.
>>
>>1116312

You seem to be rather poorly educated.

DIA was intended to be a growth pole for the region. However, there were infrastructural problems when they first opened the airport, which certainly reduced its potential ( Continental Airlines said, fuck this, we won't have a hub here).

The Dallas/Fort Worth Airport brags, "Remaining the single most important economic asset in the North Texas region, DFW Airport has been a significant factor in the relocation and expansion of more than 400 businesses to Dallas/Fort Worth"

4chan is often just as bad as reddit. No one on either site seems to have any idea what they are talking about, but they sure as shit want to say it loudly. Seriously, go to Google Scholar, type in "Airport" and then come back with something interesting to say.
>>
I saw a pretty girl at the Denver airport once
>>
>>1116588
They dont list them as a reason for the city's relevance
>>
>>1116593
None of what you said is a refutation of my post in any way. What the fuck are you even on about?
>>
>>1116805

>airport doesn't relate to relevance
>having an important port in a city doesn't relate to relevance
airports used as growth poles
airports contribute to business community

>people don't talk about airports
except city planners
except those who study urban environments
except the business community
>>
>>1116832
What i meant was,

OP asked if Denver was becoming one of the "world's great cities."

I responded that Denver is not even a top 5 US city, much less one of the best in the world.

The only refutation offered to my post was that Denver "has an international airport."

Excuse me for not being convinced that this makes a city one of the world's best.

>Not seeing shows at Beta.

But stay away from it.
>>
>>1116832
DIA is out of the way and in the absolute ass end of nowhere
>>
>on shuttle
>see "WELCOME TO DIA" sign
>sweet. got here early
>25 mins later
>still driving

Fucking shithole.
>>
>>1116849

Here's an idea, why don't you and OP create a list of characteristics that make a city important and then see how Denver compares to other cities? Then think if Denver is improving in any of these categories and think how likely it is for the city to reach the top.

Look here is one index that looks at Global Destination Cities. The only city in North America to make the top ten is NYC. And for North America Denver doesn't make the top 10 (Toronto, Montreal, Houston, Miami, NYC, LA, SF, etc.).
https://newsroom.mastercard.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Mastercard_GDCI_2014_Letter_Final_70814.pdf

BUT according to Forbes, (for the US) Denver is the number one city in America for business and career. So, maybe Denver has a chance at moving up the ranks?
http://www.forbes.com/places/co/denver/

I'm not sure and I don't really care. My only concern for this thread was that the notion that airports weren't important was tossed out. Airports like all other ports certainly matter.
>>
>>1116884

Agreed.

What's your point?

Both of the major airports in Moscow are in the middle of no where. So is the airport in Barcelona.Baku's airport is in the middle of no where. Iceland's airport is terribly far from anything. Paris's airport is also in the middle of no where. The list goes on.

Why does it seem fairly common that major airports are fairly far from the cities that they serve? Why would city planners want the airports in these locations?
>>
>>1115096

Every single mayor since 1963 has been a Democrat. If we could only turn the clock back 53 years before all those people from California came with their liberal ideology.

>>1117971

>>
>>1112995
It's really a shame, Denver was a great city but Colorado's lax drug laws have attracted a lot of losers.
>>
>>1117971

The problem is that a lot of people are moving there and not as many jobs are being created. And the jobs that are being moved to Denver are typically call center jobs. I remember in college a couple years ago the staff being really excited about the thousands of call center jobs opening up which they expect the students will want. My question for them is why the fuck would I get a degree to work at a shitty call center? It's hard to get a well paying job in Denver.

My friend that still lives there recently told me that quite a few cities have tried to revitalize themselves the same way Denver did to attract more people (st Louis, wyoming, ect) but are unsuccessful. It's actually kind of crazy that a city that was basically considered to be on the middle of nowhere has grown so much.
>>
>>1112995
That landscape definitly looks beatiful. Is there much skiing in winter?
>>
>>1112995
I like Denver but the winter will kill me. I'm not outdoorsy when it comes to snow and I can't stand snow. Also I need the ocean.

Washington and Oregon is comfy for me even though it is overcast and rains 360 days out of the year, but it's at least a mild 50-60 degrees with an ocean and mountainous range.

accurately, how many sunny days does washington (especially more inland mountains and Belingham area) get?

I don't know the exact number of sunny days but I know the lack of sun really bothers some people. I grew up in Bellingham so I'm very used to it, it just feels like home. Another thing to keep in mind is we're very far north. There are several months during winter where I would go to school in the dark and leave school in the dark.

Summer in the northwest however is the most magical place on earth.
