What are some good places to travel alone?

Literally anywhere. Just hop into any thread on this board. A lot of people travel by them selves. There are both pro's and cons of traveling solo. But I find it overall easier compared to when I traveled with friends. Anywhere that you can travel with a group you can do solo and vise versa.
>>
Anywhere with casinos and gambling. Sit down at a table and make some new friends.

Anywhere, like another said...cept cruises, they're a bit lonely alone.
Anywhere with museums that you wish to do, cause you can indulge yourself at each painting or artifact as short or as long as you wish. Read allllll the signs, or not! Economically speaking, renting a car and your hotel isn't splitable alone, so cities with good public transport evens it out a bit.
DC is awesome alone, and it's got this transient town thing going on where everyone is temporarily on business, on assignment, on vacation, and food/nightlife is awesome.

Southeast asia was the largest amount of solo travelers including myself. Fly into bangkok, take a taxi down town, hop out ask for directions and you will travel with the people for 4 weeks like i did. To me SE asia is the best place to solo travel, there are tons of people there doing it all the time
>>
>>1081748
This, also Central America is really good for the number of solo travelers.

Basically the areas that don't have solo travelers are Europe and North America. The more expensive a place the more likely the traveling crowd will be older and less adventurous (meaning will not travel alone). Asia is great for solo travel because it's super cheap, except for Japan and Korea which will see more group tourism. The only major exception to expensive solo tourism place is Australia where there's quite a lot of people traveling alone on work-holidays there.

Solo travel is great though, I prefer it to traveling with someone who isn't your SO. It's very difficult to find a travel partner who has exactly the same desires for travel.

Hijacking this thread somewhat, but it saves making a new one. I have never been abroad. I've stayed in England for all 27 years of my life and want to start seeing the world.

Would it be sensible to go somewhere English speaking for a first trip so there is no confusion at airports, public transport and so on? I don't want to go to some far off land and then realise that I don't understand what to do and where to go and am unable to ask for help. At least if I kept it simple and went to New York or somewhere for my first trip I'd have no communication issues.
>>
>>1081846
To clarify, if it wasn't obvious, I intend to go alone. I didn't just choose a random thread to hijack.
>>
>>1081846

Fuck that, put yourself outside of your comfort zone. You can speak English in England. If you have a moderate amount of self-awareness you're probably going to be fine virtually anywhere that people travel.

You don't need to fly halfway around the world either - hop on a plane to Barcelona or Prague or Budapest or Berlin for 40 pounds and get lost in the city. Tons of people speak English anywhere in the world, go have an adventure
>>
>>1081846
My first trip alone was for 5 days to a city 500km away from mine. Same language, it was interesting but it wasn't as great as my first 2 longer trips. After that one I decided to jump into the deep end and traveled alone to Czech Republic, Slovakia and Russia. Then the next trip was Cuba and Mexico. I don't speak any of their languages. I survived and had a lot more fun than going to a relatively nearby city.

I suggest you take a week off and fly to Bulgaria or Romania or Czech Republic(as long as you stay away from Prague where they all pretty much speak English these days) and just test the waters. A week goes by quick. If you end up hating it it's only a few more days before going back. If you end up loving it your next trip will be longer and further away...

depends on what you want.

alone as in the only person in the world, I guess doing a solo-sailing tour of the world would be pretty void of human contact.

Cycling seems to work for solitary people as well. Or become a trucker, they're usually alone.

And if you mean to go by yourself and meet new people, a good bet is to go where many other tourists go (preferably where you can get alcohol as well).

Thanks, chaps.

Two countries I want to visit the most are Burma and Iran but I think I'll get a few others under my belt first.

I have a Bulgarian friend so he may be able to recommend some places to me in Eastern Europe. Cuba is another I'd like to visit one day.

Burma and Cuba are very high on my to-do list. Both recently opened up their borders to westerners and haven't yet transformed into tourist traps. I really need to get to both countries before they do (5-10 years).

Don't shy away from Southeast Asia (including Burma) as a first solo trip. Lots of people are solo travelers from Europe, Australia, and the US, and you can do it on a very cheap budget excluding airfare. I've been to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia, and Singapore but I regret not spending any time in Burma while I was there.
>>
>>1081917
I suggest going to Cuba NOW. Burma is kinda far away from western countries so it will likely slowly increase the number of visitors, maybe more Chinese will go there now but they travel in groups so will likely not affect us much. As where Cuba will see Americans flooding in droves. There will be massive investment and massive changes in Cuba in the next few years. I expect it to look much more like the other Caribbean islands which will be a shame cause Cuba is super interesting.

Did... did you just say DC is awesome?
Go kill yourself. I live here and it is misery.
>>

Every other country in the world already goes to Cuba and always has..... It's got Canadians and UK citizens galore, who buy property too.

The only thing that will change Cuba is the internet access. They already allow residents to get larger money gifts from expat family members. Once they stop being able to immigrate to the US, and there's no more governmnent fear of them of them fleeing at every opportunity...then they will actively participate in the rest of what the Caribbean does. This isn't likely to destroy their unexplored cool ecosystems, and eco-travel isn't destructive. When Cubans are allowed to fish the reefs, do dive boats and go crazy like that? It'll be cool for a while. But, unlike Burma, they already have credit card usage, electricity everywhere, and satellite TVs.

Why is DC misery to you?

Top city in 2014 for "cool" according to Forbes.

Canadians and UK residents don't buy property there, what the fuck you talking about? Only Cuban citizens can buy property. When I went 2 years ago there was less investment than you might imagine. There's a lot of westerners who married Cubans and invested but on a country wide scales that's still a very small number of people. Like you said there's a lot of investment from families living in America sending money back but that's just starting to be implemented now.

Right now there's not a single American fast food joint on the island outside of Guantanamo. The island has a cool vibe right now because it's so closed off, there are things there you can't see anywhere else. Most Canadians travel to resorts only, in fact there are not many tourists outside of resorts so you don't see that fake overdevelopment as in other countries in the Carib. In the next 5 years if I don't see at least 1 article saying McDonalds is opening a location in Cuba I will be shocked. I wouldn't be surprised if in 5-10 years the country has just as many western fast food restaurants as local ones.
>>
>>1081980
Lol this. I don't understand why people think it's untouched. It has vintage cars, it's a less western way of life, etc but tourists have been going there for ages. Americans have been around too... They just couldn't fly directly.

With that said, it's still a cool country but I was there 4 years ago and it definitely wasn't untouched then.

i alwatys travel alone. id say my best experience traveling alone was japan, but thats if you dont really want to meet people. its almost like the country was designed for people to simply wander around existing. its also safe and there are plenty of sites you cam just stare st for a while.

if you wamt to meet people like others said central america is good. start in an easy location and get a dorm at a well known hostel for about a week. meet people there and try to go to the next country with someone you like.

you mentioned iran and the middle east is a place you will meet fellow westerners (if you are one) begging you to hang out because you are hard to come by, however, i dont care if people call me a bigot the middle east can become a terrifying place if you are on your own very quickly.

Thanks. It's not just my first solo trip though, it's my first trip in general. Do all airports have English speaking staff?
>>
>>1082176
Pretty much, just don't expect everyone to speak English in airports. There's usually a service desk that will have someone who speaks English.
>>
>>1082176
Having been to South America a couple times and Europe as well, every major airport has signage in English plus the native language. Not everyone you encounter will speak English, but just duolingo the language for where you are going to get some basics.
>>
>>1082084
>my best experience traveling alone was japan

Do you speak Japanese? I don't get how people even order food or buy a train ticket - the language barrier is too much
>>
>>1082252

You point to an item on the menu and order. Google translate has an a way to translate pics you take which is bad but at least you know the contents of a dish.
>>
>>1082252
pretty much this
>>1082258
but even then it can be a little bit of a hassle, but just a little bit. you might spend an extra 10 to 15 minutes at a subway station ir have some awkward exchanges at a restaurant but us that really what keeps you from seeing the world?
>>
>>1082084
Why is central America a thing? I'm here now and never knew it was a solo traveller mecca
>>
>>1082345
Lots of people speak Spanish as a second language, there's also a good network of hostels and it's actually quite cheap. It's the alternative South-East Asia with a little more "danger" which makes it more exciting for adventurous people.

A lot of Germans go there, like a ridiculous amount. I traveled with a German guy there for a week or so and he said that in the hostel he was in right before he met me, everyone spoke German. There were 2 or 3 Austrians and everyone else was from Germany. But I also met a lot of other Europeans. Few people from other regions even though people told me there was a lot of Canadians there (me included) but I guess I didn't come across them.
>>
>>1082345
its too volatile to ever really be mainstream, they can write guidebooks all they want but most people will stay away because of gang violence and volcanoes. as a result, you might be taking a risk in some areas but you will meet some people that are like traveling enough to do the same.
