Evening /trv/
I come enquiring if any of you fine travellers have spent time in Madrid

Considering getting my girlfriend and I flights and hotel for a long weekend in Madrid at the start of March. Flights are £49 return from Dublin, and the hotel is working out about £189 for the 3 nights.

Whats the general consensus on Madrid?
Some of the attractions look beautiful, but im conscious its not as "desirable" as say the likes of Barcelona.

To date, in the last 2yrs, we have visited, Rome, Barcelona, London, Prague. We arent interested in Paris or Amsterdam, so im not too sure where else in Europe might be worthwhile going for the weekend.
>>
For long weekends:
Florence, berlin, venice, verona, pomei etc.

I went to madrid last year and enjoied it. Prices are low (respect to Italy) food great good museum people outside until very late even in weekdays
>>
Madrid is nice and you can go on a day trip to Segovia or Toledo if you want something more scenic.

As an alternative I'd recommend Stockholm if you can postpone it until April, when cherry blossom trees bloom and the weather is a bit nicer. The prices however are a bit higher.

Madrid is plenty fun, although I'm more familiar with Toledo. I spent six weeks there last summer and I can say it's definitely worth a day trip at least. Incredible history. One of the only cities in the world with an extensive blend of Christian, Muslim, and Jewish culture. The art and architecture are among the best in Spain.

Hi, OP

Go to this ancient Turkish Spa/Bathouse thing.

It's pretty incredible. Especially with a GF, who will LOVE it.

I think Madrid is way below the general quality Spain has to offer. That said it's a big city and you can find something that appeals to you as in any huge city. Honestly if I had the time and the flight I would probably just spend one day in Madrid and the rest of the time I would visit anything worth in the surroundings

Not to derail the thread.

I'm a student who's about to study abroad in Spain for the next 5 months at the University of Salamanca. I'm pretty nervous, since it's the first time I've been out of the country for a truly extended period. Any tips on where I should visit while I'm in Spain? I also wanted to hop over to Morocco for a spell. I've heard that San Sebastian has some amazing eating too so I was thinking of putting that at the top of my list.

I second these anon's suggestions, Toledo is one of the most incredible cities I have ever seen (the Cathedral is cum-inducing), and Segovia is similarly awesome. I've been to Spain before for 7 days and of all the places I went, Madrid, Toledo, and Segovia (along with Granada and Cordoba) were my favorites. Central Spain has a much different vibe from Barcelona, I think you will enjoy it OP.

OP HERE

Thanks for the info folks, went ahead and booked Madrid for March. Now to get planning what to do over our 4 day weekend stay.

Its a real city so its not as tourist friendly as Barcelona. Its worth a see. Pretty cheap, good food, nice parks. The theme park is a lot of fun if you get bored.

Oh boy, drunk americans and quiet-as-fuck chinese
>>

Salamanca is a very stereotypical study-abroad town. You should definitely leave yourself some time after finals to travel and see places like Sevilla, Granada, Barcelona. If you're into beaches, Tarifa (next to Gibraltar) is an amazing place once it warms up a little
>>
Bump. I'm going to madrid next week and could use some suggestions. I've written some of these down, thanks!

Also, I have heard that you can get into certain places like museums for free if you have a student ID on you. Is that true?

What would you do in Barcelona if you had to go there during this month?

Fucked up with my greentexting there, sorry.
>>
Why are you not interested in Paris or Amsterdam ?
Amsterdam is really beautiful and the people are nice.
Paris is also really beautiful and I will go again for sure, I actually only went there because it was a cheap flight to Europe ( was in Vietnam ).

My money is on Budapest though, in terms of the full package it's my favourite city in Europe.

Id be going with my girlfriend.
Neither of us are into drugs, and whilst she is in favour of regulating the sex industry to make it safer, she personally doesnt agree with prostitution so she would not like even seeing that.

Plus every photo ive seen of friends and family in Amsterdam always looks cloudy and overcast. The photos and attractions have just never, WOWed me.

France, eh, we honestly just have no interest in the language or food, or art museums.

Hey guys I'm thinking of studying in Madrid for at least a year, university is paid for, I'll be making approximately 1700 euro per month, is it enough?
>>
>>1060542
More than enough.
>>

I could be wrong because I was there in august so my memory might be off but I think you can get into the renia sofia for free with a student ID and Prado at like monday after 5 its free to the public

I enjoyed Renia Sofia 100 times more than Prado but I was also with a different crowd and extremely rushed at Prado so maybe it wont be as bad for you

>>1060542
I stayed there for 2 weeks and between food and going out 5/7 nights a week I only spent 500 euro in those two weeks, Madrid is really cheap

Fuck Barcelona - I myself prefer Madrid. The reasons to visit Barcelona are the dance clubs, drugs & beaches, and pornography and Gaudi (Beaux-Arts Disney). These are not intrinsically bad but I'd prefer to get my Spain elsewhere. The crude analogy is a New York / Miami sort of thing. The more time you spend walking the better off you'll be.

...but, to mention Barcelona, I did get to practice my Chinese at many cafes. They don't close for siesta and the shop keepers' brains explode when you engage with them.
