Hello, /trv/.

So, I'm flying to Tulsa, Idaho via Amsterdam and Detroit from Edinburgh, Scotland.

I have a butterfly knife of value and sentiment. Will it be alright to transfer it via checked luggage?

Googling has left me with unclear and different answers.

I can leave it with a family member here so, it can be held for me. I was able to take it before in freight. But moving alone this time, having only my luggage and carry on, I'm not sure what to do.

Well you can bring unloaded guns on airlines in America as long as its in a locked case in the cargo hold. Have no idea about euro standards
>>
>>1052200
Guns are different than potentially illegal knives though.
>>

Butterfly knives are legal in Idaho and Michigan. There are no federal laws regarding knife ownership. I would imagine you would probably get much more shit about it in Edinburgh and Amsterdam than anywhere in America.

It'll be in checked luggage and I'm leaving with it. I figure it would really only be an issue should I be entering one of those countries to stay. I terminate in the US so I figure it should be fine for just passing through... But I don't want to get into any shit. Especially abroad.

Well its to my understanding ballisongs are illegal pretty much everywhere in Europe, especially the UK.

Would the checked in luggage be scanned for those sorts of items in any meaningful way upon checking in my luggage? If they were found passing through EDI or Amsterdam could I be prosecuted?

*or confiscated

Make sure to seal it properly with a smooth but hardy plastic wrapper then vaseline it and shove it up your ass
>>
I bought a really nice handmade butterfly knife from a guy in the philippines, he sent it to my address in a package labeled as "tools".
>>
Call the airline and ask if its ok. Worst off they will jut take it from you. You cannot be prosecuted for something legal in your country.
On that note, I brought back two machetes on two separate occasions, one from Dominican Rep, one from Panama, both to Detroit, and then over the border to Canada. No issues in checked luggage.

As much as I love sticking things in my ass...

Really I'm just looking for whether or not British airways would pick it up in a scan and have issue with it when I initially leave the country.

Knowing that I could potentially mail it is neat.
>>
Against US law to bring it into the country. US customs will confiscate if they find it.

Pursuant to the Act of August 12, 1958 (Pub. L. 85-623, codified at 15 U.S.C. §§1241-1245, otherwise known as the “Switchblade Knife Act”, whoever knowingly introduces, or manufactures for introduction, into interstate commerce, or transports or distributes in interstate commerce, any switchblade knife, shall be fined or imprisoned, or both.
19 C.F.R. § 12.95 Definitions.
Terms as used in §§12.96 through 12.103 of this part are defined as follows:
(a) Switchblade knife. …any imported knife,…including “Balisong”, “butterfly” … knives

Leave it at home if you don't want to risk losing it.

TY, I'll leave it with my brother then. He's cared for it before.

What the word or mailing it? Does it fall under that same law?
