22 and a student. I have a decent job now but funded most of my early trips by working as a sandwich delivery driver and saving all of my earnings outside of rent and regular bills.

I'm planning to go to Mexico City for two weeks over spring break. I have a $1200 travel voucher from Delta Airlines, which I'm trying to figure out how to use. I'm thinking of China and Southeast Asia or maybe a trip through Central and South America. Because I'm liable to be quite poor, I'm thinking of SEA and doing Brazil for a month next winter.

Been to both Turkey and India multiple times, as well as the UAE. Going to India again in December, already bought my ticket.

Curious what you were doing in the Middle East/Caucasus.
>>
>>1045878

Just traveling around. It was my first trip I had initially planned to do a route along the lines of Turkey-Greece-Egypt-Israel-Jordan-UAE-Nepal-India, but I wound up missing my flight from Athens to Cairo. I got back to Istanbul, the Gezi Park protests happened, and I wound up staying there a bit longer than I'd planned. After the situation cooled down I went around Turkey, got stranded in Diyarbakir early in the morning, and was convinced to go to Iraqi Kurdistan by a man selling bus tickets. I'd already done some research on the pace, so it wasn't a huge jump for me.

Spent a while there and then hitchhiked to Van and Ercis, in SE Turkey. Went back to Istanbul to meet a friend from the USA and then took a bus to Tbilisi with a German friend I'd met earlier in my trip. Then I went to Armenia, flew to Dubai, Bahrain, and onward to India.

I like Turkey quite a bit, so I try to fly out of Istanbul or spend a few days there whenever possible. My uncle also lived in Dubai for a couple of years, so I'd visit him whenever I was going to India. Now he's back in the UAE - except in Abu Dhabi this time - so I'll probably keep going back.

>>
>>1045884

I honestly didn't use public transportation on my first trip. It's sort of funny - I had more money for those three months than I've had for any subsequent excursion, but I budgeted myself very strictly. I did a lot of walking around cities like Duhok and Erbil and tried to avoid any unnecessary transportation expenses. I like exploring new cities by foot, so it worked out well enough for me.

Honestly, I can't remember there being too many intercity transportation options, so far as buses went. I'm sure they had them, but I don't remember them and they're not in any of the pictures I took.

Taxis were very cheap. I tried to get a shared cab on the Duhok-Mosul-Erbil route. The guy in charge of the company kept trying to get me to take one by myself. I kept refusing, not to haggle, but because I genuinely wanted to go with other people to save money. He started off around 60,000 IQD and reduced the price to somewhere between 15k IQD and 25k IQD over the course of an hour without me even saying a word, so I wound up going solo. Regardless of what the "real" price is, I thought $15-$25 for a four hour taxi ride was good enough.

And I'd like to go Syria as well as Yemen. Of course, that doesn't mean that I'd go right at this very moment, with both countries being taken by civil wars. I just think that "Manhattan of the Desert" looks cool. I'd like to visit there, as well as some of the cultural sites.

Are you the dude that almost got killed in Yemen?
When did you go to Afghanistan?
Why do you want to go to Kuwait?
What's your favorite Subsaharan African country?
>>
>>1046202
Haha yep that's me. I went to Afghanistan with the army in 2010/11, I'm heading back to a safer region to get a different perspective on the place though. It was really beautiful and the people seemed like they could be cool if it wasn't for the whole war thing.
I expect Kuwait to be boring as fuck, but I'm flying there to start my trip next month. I'll just spend a few days there then take a boat to Khorramshahr in Iran (assuming I can't get an Iraqi visa), then make my way to Herat in Afghanistan and see a bit of the surrounding area, head back to Iran, then cross to Pakistan.

Favourite sub-Saharan country = Uganda, with Malawi the runner up.

For the better, I'd think.

I really resonate with places that are less populated, and especially with that sparse northern feeling with big landscapes. Favourite places like that in Canada have been: Newfoundland & Labrador, the Prairies, and obv the wide variety of landscapes in BC. I have yet to reach the Yukon and NWT though.

And I'm also keen on seeing Siberia, easternmost Russia, Mongolia, places in the U.S. like Montana and Washington + Oregon, New Zealand...

I think I'll try to plan a bike tour in Mongolia or Iceland at some point.

Last place in the world I'd wanna visit is Los Angeles and SoCal in general. Can't stand the idea for some reason.

PNG is absolutely one of the most beautiful countries I've been. Lots and lots of beatiful nature, both on land and in the water. I mostly went there for diving which I would definitely recommend. Go to West New Britain, lots of insane diving spots. If you're not into diving, I would say just do treks around the country with Kokoda being the absolute highlight for me.

The thing with PNG is, because Tourism is still fairly low, everything is quite expensive especially the lodges/guesthouses. I would recommend getting in touch with a local who can set you up with accommodation with locals cause you'll be able to save a shitton of money.

If you're looking for a cheaper alternative go to the Indonesian part of Papua, it is not as beautiful (but I'm comparing the two now) but it's still great. If you can take a diving trip to Raja Ampat.

The people in Papua are absolutely great.

Counting ALL flights being made daily, that would include all domestic flights, international flights and cargo transport, there are about 100,000 successful flights a day.

In 2014, 761 people were killed in flight accidents but there were 37,400,000 flights scheduled that year. 3 billion passengers did not die in flight related accidents that year.

761 out of 3,000,000,000 people. This means you got a better chance of dying on your way to the airport no matter which transport you use to get there. You got a better chance of winning millions on the lottery etc.

tl;dr: The chances of dying in an airplane crash are so small they are almost non existing.

I went in the summer of 2013. I spent about $4-5k over the course of my trip, if I'm remembering correctly. However, you could do the exact same thing for quite a bit less money. It was my first trip and I wound up spending a lot on alcohol, unnecessary transportation, and pricey food. A hefty sum went towards plane tickets I booked at the last minute, too.

I took another trip the following year which lasted longer with half the budget.

I'm too lazy to coloring the map, sorry. Homeland is a small province in Russia. Today living in Moscow. Have been almost everywhere in Russia - my mom liked to travel, if it could be said so. Also have been in Ukraine, Poland, Germany, Czech Republic, Egypt, Belarus, Israel, Cyprus, lived for some time in US (visited almost all from Chicago to New Orleans, was in NY).

Wanna go to Australia, Finland, Romania, Canada.

I lived there for a year and I would say that if you're passing by that there probably won't be much to see. What really made Almaty memorable for me was the people there. I found them to be extremely friendly and hospitable, but I'm also half black and half Latino with an afro so I stuck out quite a bit. Everyone wanted to speak to me, invite me round, touch my hair... Regardless, they're pretty sound and you can always have a crack with Kazakhs and get them to show those gold teeth.

Almaty in a way reminds me of Dubai, where people quickly came into money and don't know what to do with it and so they end up showing off how much money they can spend. It's not uncommon to see a Bentley rolling behing a soviet cluncker. Almatians have a sense of arrogance too even though nothing is that great unless you're comparing it to Uzbekistan or Kyrgyzstan which looks like it's 15 years behind. With that said it has the best nightlife and food in Central Asia and probably your best chance to hook up. Mountains are lovely too and are just a short bus ride from the city center.

In the city every car on the road doubles as a private taxi and almost everyone uses them for transportation around the city. Outside the city I found hitchhiking quite easy and the people much more hospitable. Fed loads of food, given a place to sleep for the night.

Most of the tourist attractions are geared towards those who like nature and are mostly in the South. See the kolsai lakes, charyn canyon medeo and big Almaty Lake. Astana felt weird and empty. I wouldn't recommend going there unless you're into it's buildings.

Then Belarus, Norway and Estonia and I am done (exept for little bs countries like malta, cyprus, liechtenstein, san marino and monaco)
