I no longer have a reason to stay in my home state of Michigan and have decided that I should live a little and travel. I don't have much money, so I plan on hitchhiking to California to see family and then see where I want to go from there. Any tips on hitchhiking/train hopping or being a hobo in general are appreciated.

I also am considering something similar. Know the feels man.
Have fun whoring yourself out at a truck stop.

G2know mate
While traveling, where and what was the best thing you ever ate (besides "your Mom," of course).
first place was about 15 years ago, at the great wall of china, -20f with windchill, bought a hot steamed yam for 8 yuan. most amazing, nourishing, re-energizing single item of food i've ever experienced.
second best was in denver a couple years ago, incidentally during restaurant week, my wife and i ate $200 worth of steak for $52.80. fucking phenomenal.
Tough question. I like eating.
New Orleans is pretty bomb all over. Fried oyster poboy, sweet potato bignets, king cake, grilled alligator, boiled crawfish... not to mention drinking a sazerac
I had haddock fish and chips in London, that was the best f&c I've had
My home town Albuquerque has pretty badass breakfast burritos, I never get tired of them.
West Seattle has a stellar sushi joint called Mashiko, and close to that is a little pastry shop that kicks ass too
Fish tagine in Dakhla. Dunno what fish they used; had massive bones, maybe it was swordfish or something. Seasoned to perfection. By god I licked the caramelized onions off the bottom of that dish.
Second place goes to another fish dish I had in Sri Lanka. At the beach town we were in, each of the hotels had a boat set out on the beach, packed full of ice, and displaying the day's catch. You'd point at the exact fish you wanted to eat and ten minutes later they'd bring it out to you, head still on, grilled and seasoned so it melts in your mouth. Wash down with Lion beer.
Sup /trv/,
Im considering a big road trip through the US and possibly Canada. Im planning to go about 3-6 months (almost finished my masters etc). Because of the length of my trip i figured buying a car would probably be a better option than renting. As a (western) european owning a car (as well as driving one) is quite expensive. Probably more expensive than buying one in the US. Therefore im wondering what the price would be for a reasonable car in the US? That means that i dont give a fuck how it looks, it just has to work (and keep working). I've been browsing craigslist a bit and <$2500 seems enough for a decent car? Would that be a fair statement?
Also, would it matter alot on which side of the country i would buy the car? Is it notably cheaper on one side or the other?
Pic somewhat related, its a sexy af car imo.
Seems kind of tricky. A car isn't something you can just buy and be done with it. You need to register it in your state of residence... and seeing as to how you're a foreigner with no US permanent residence, no state residence, no state driver's license, I'm not sure it could be done. Not to mention, I don't even know if it's possible to get insurance without a US home address. You'd have to research that. The only way I could think of to get around all that is to find an American willing to have the car and insurance registered under their name. Maybe if you had family here? You'll need an address to get the title mailed to you too. You may just be better off renting.
>>1093629
yeah ive looked briefly into that. The car insurance seems to be the main problem. Ive read stories of people who were able to just insure their car with a dutch adress, others said that the adress of the hotel theyre staying at was accepted. A somewhat more expensive (but foolproof i guess) option is to insure the car through a dutch company, which apparently is no hassle at all (you just have to e-mail your purchasing bill of the car you buy in the US etc.). I agree its definetly something to think about but probably not something that would hold me back :) .
>>1093619
I recommend you get one of the following:
>99-02 Volkswagen New Beetle
>Any year Volkswagen Golf
>1992-1998 Honda Accord
>1992-2002 Volvo V70 (bonus ability to sleep in your car)
>2000-2006 Volvo XC70
>2001-2006 Ford Focus
In general Volkswagens are fairly unbreakable, and the Volvo station wagons are tanks. All of the above should be on the right side of 3k and won't depreciate in the time you get them.
At that price you 100% want to buy from a private seller, you will literally be taking out the trash for a dealer at that price point. Usually with private sellers, you can get a feel in the first 60 seconds of phone conversation if the car is legit. If they seem like they have maintained the car well and have a valid reason for selling, you always talk down the price, at least a few hundred bucks. Think like it was Thailand. Don't price bully, but in canada it's expected you give it a go. When I was buying my Beetle (a cracking good car BTW) the guy dropped 200 bucks off the price without my asking just to help close the deal.
Also, buy the car in Quebec and register it there. Insurance is about $50/mo. in Quebec, versus AT LEAST $200/mo. in Ontario (probably more). Insurance is mandatory in Canada and you will catch big shit if you don't have it.
You need to have it emission tested and safety certified for it to run, what that means is it can't have any safety faults or be in such a shit condition that it's spewing out extra carbon dioxide or other pollutants. Always look for "safety & e-tested" in the advertisement (and watch out for the term "AS-IS", that often means it can't pass said tests without some work)
You CAN find a cheap car on Autotrader.CA but it's more for decently expensive cars, Kijiji.CA is your best bet for private sellers in the sub 5k range. A lot of crazy shit comes out of Craigslist but you can find some epic deals, and strange rides.
Pic related is my Beetles dashboard. Sorry, not for sale.
Planning a trip from 4/4 - 4/18. Anyone have city recommendations? Must-see things?

What do you want in a holiday?
Here are a few things you should look into: the blue mountains, the coral coast (ningaloo reef), uluru, the great barrier reef (obviously), swimming with whale sharks, melbourne nightlife, cains, red or white sand beaches in WA, airlie beach, byron bay, nimbin (Australias most well accepted stoned hippie town)
>>1093364
Party and chill and do touristy shit. I have no budget so I could really splurge.
>>1093364
fuck
nimbin
seriously. Plenty of other weed-friendly towns that aren't third world shitholes.
As in, any town in a 100 kay radius of Nimbin.
Hello,
Do any Americans here have experience travelling to Canada without a passport? Some friends and I planned a weekend up, but I didn't realize my passport card had expired. From everything I've read online, travelling into Canada as a US citizen only requires a birth certificate and photo ID, although I will bring as many documents as I can possibly find.
However, I can't find an easy answer on returning to America, and what documents are required to do so. I really don't want to get stranded at the border.
>>1093338
https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/country/canada.html
It's all listed there. Are you driving or flying? It makes a difference.
>>1093342
I'm driving. So from the sounds of that link, I can get into Canada, but not return. Is that seriously right? That's insane.
>>1093350
drove up in October (through Michigan)
getting into Canada they searched the entire car, coming back into the states they just let us through, no problems.
It would be a really, really good idea to have a passport tho

>Advice for op moving to Ireland?
Well, Boston weather is pretty decently similar...so you already know how to dress...
but I think you should know that there is sheep shit everywhere, and it rains like London/Seattle rain, all the time. So consider what shoes you pack.
You will need a car. Fact.
>>1093343
I shld of mentioned I visit every yead, so I'm definitely ready for the weather and the sheep shit lol
Yeah, don't move to Ireland.
Im driving up to detroit alone for a few days to photograph the city, but I need a CHEAP hotel/motel to stay at. The problem is cheap is usually in the bad neighborhoods, and I dont want to die. Where are the "good" parts of Detroit to stay?
Gross Point, it's a world of difference. Though it's a suburban area so it's more expensive. The border from Gross Point/Detroit is freaky, totally "wrong side of the tracks".
Also check out the abandoned zoo, great photography location. Just bring boots and pepper spray.
The good areas are midtown, corktown, and downtown. Dunno about cheap and good tho

Hey /trv/
Me and my gf are planning on a 5 day trip to Transylvania.
On day 1 We're landing in Bucharest.
On day 2 We're taking a train to Brasov early in the morning. We plan to take a taxi to see bran castle and sinaia
On day 3 we're gonna take a train to sighisoara.
We might take a train the day after to Sibiu if We have time, if not back to Bucharest.
How does this plan seem?
Any tips and suggestions?
Thanks in advance
been there a couple of weeks ago, so here goes.
I've heard there are excursions to see both Bran and Sianaia castles in a day. But all the people I met were evaluating the Bran castle as "meh" at most. And SInaia seems more like a posh summer retreat than a castle to me. So I didn't go there. I enjoyed both Brasov and Sighisoara, doing the latter as a day trip from the former. Both are nice medieval towns. More stuff to see in Brasov.
Also, there are things to see in Bucharest for like half a day. Whole day if you want to see inside the Parliament building; in the latter case, look up the tour times - it's only possible to visit with a tour, but it's not necessary to book in advance.
Both Bucharest and Brasov have the so-called "free walking tours" which are ok. THey both start at 3 P.M., last a couple of hors and show you most of what there's to see for free. In Brasov add some time for the black church (paid entrance). What else? In Brasov don't go to the Sergiana restaurant that the walking tour recommends, it's overhyped and the food is nothing sepcial.
I'm going to bed heading to the same places in a week's time!
Hoping to maybe do some paragliding in Brasov. How is the nightlife there?
I have a flight out of Bucharest at like 9AM so I'm hoping to take a bus from Brasov to Bucharest early in the morn to get my flight.
>>1093131
Thanks mate!
By the way, what's the best way to get to sighisoara from Brasov? Is it taxi, train or bus?
My girlfriend and I are doing 19 nights in Europe this May. Most of the travel will be by plane but some by train/bus. Is 3 nights in a city the right amount of time for a trip? 2 feels like we would be leaving as soon as we got there, and 4 feels too long.
I would like to see Dublin, London, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Rome, Florence, Venice, some of the italian cost (Pic related) and Barcelona. Could we reasonably do each of these cities in two days WITH travel time?
>>1092942
>Dublin, London, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Rome, Florence, Venice, some of the italian cost (Pic related) and Barcelona. Could we reasonably do each of these cities in two days WITH travel time?
No.
Every one of those cities has lots to do in them, you could spend a week in each to do them slowly, maybe three days WITHOUT travel time to do them comfortably. You'd probably still be a bit rushed running around.
Two days in Paris including travel time? You'd barely get through the louvre in that.
>>1093030
Umm, if you're saying Paris is a 'diversity ruined third world shithole', how you can say Brussels is god tier?
>>1093030
Bullshit
>god tier
Florence
>bro tier
Paris
London
Barcelona
>meh tier
Rest
My friend wants me to plan a trip for me and him to "a god forsaken third world shithole" this January. Now third-world shitholes are my preferred areas to visit which is why he is wanting me to do the planning (he has only ever visited Europe) however the largest problem I am running into is time constraints. We are only going to have around 10-11 days total to visit where we are going so it limits us greatly.
Burma
>fly into Mandalay
>Check out Bagan
>possibly check out Yangon
India
>fly into Mumbai
>then head to Delhi
I would greatly prefer going to Burma because it is a dream spot of mine and my wife does not want to visit (so the perfect trip to do without her), however due to the logistics of traveling around Burma I think India may be more realistic. Given 10-11 days do you think I could knock this small trip of Burma out? My friend and I have plenty of money to spend on shit like personal drivers between cities and such.
>>1092920
Most of the cities in Myanmar are linked by air, and the flights aren't terribly expensive. I'll take a $100 flight over losing a day and a half on the road, at least, if there are time constraints.
>>1092920
I hope you at realize the amount of privilege you have by being able to call other nations "third world shitholes".
>>1093072
Alright /trv/ I'm going to Myanmar the 1st of April as the start of a short SEA trip (2,5 months). Planning to spend 3-4 weeks in Myanmar, and travelling with qt 3.14 GF.
What I'm tripping balls over is the government taxes on guesthouses, hotels etc. Each overnight seems to be 20 USD+, and this will seriously fuck up the budget we've planned - or atleast take a serious toll on it.
Any tips on how to avoid staying in overpriced guesthouses?
Couchsurfing any good? Crashing at the occasional monastery? Paying locals for a couch in the night?
Hit me up with your confirmed possibilites or 8/8 ideas
I've never been there specifically, but I'm sure you can pay people to stay at their houses UNLESS the government has specifically forbidden this, which tyrannical governments have in the past.
If your lassie is cool as well as cute, y'all could camp a few nights.
Have fun and let us know how it goes. Thinking of going there for honeymoon.
>>1092906
Never found a cheap way to stay in Myanmar. Melbourne prices, Manila standards.
I haven't checked couchsurfing, that might work. There's enough expats there these days...
>>1092916
there's apparently some law requiring tourists to register at local government offices if staying the night in the region outside of a guesthouse. Not really enforced as far as I can tell from reading abit up on the subject
also bump
Hi /trv/,
Any great restaurants and bars to check out in Vancouver? Going there with a friend for a week. We wanted to check out the suspension bridge, is it really $36 admission to get on it?
How is Gastown? Any cool places to check out there? Someone told us to check out the Narrow Lounge on main street and it looks awesome - any kind of hidden gems like that would be cool to know. Thanks in advance!
Suspension Bridge is a stupid touristy waste of time, don't bother. Vancouvertrails has way more interesting stuff, much of it that you'd have to yourself.
Gastown's touristy but has lots of good eateries too. Six Acres and Alibi Room are great places to start your night/grab dinner. Nelson the Seagull is great too for lunch, though that's Downtown Eastside which is a grungy but gentrifying neighbourhood nearby.
Narrow Lounge is cool, as is Main Street generally. Also consider checking out Locus and, if you're into veg stuff, Acorn has high end stuff with no meat. Good even for non-veg folks (I love meat). Also check out Commercial Drive if you're into what Main Street has to offer.
Enjoy, OP.
>>1092965
Thank you so much!
>>1092874
What sort of food do you like and what's your budget? Vancouver has mediocre food for the most part except for Asian food. Having said that, I'd say Vancouver has some of the best cheap sushi (under $15) in the world. There are a lot of good Chinese restaurants, noodle shops and dim sum all over the place.
As for the bridge fee, yeah it's a tourist trap kind of place. I go there when someone visits me. But there's another suspension bridge not too far away from that one that's free. It's smaller but there are actual hiking trails beyond it if you're into that.
Hello /trv/!
I'll be going on London for 3 days. It'd be my first time, with 2 others friends.
Any advices of what should I see, visit, eat?
Also do you have advices on where to sleep for 2 nights?
If possible near Baker Street.
Thank you.
Im in a very similar situation. 3 days but gonna be meeting 2 locals. Im planning to go, see the memes then just fuck about. Try and find English, Scottish and Irish eateries while there cuz not visiting the respective countries and its the best next thing. For my sleeping arrangements Im gonna stay at what google tells me is the cheapest place and is not in a stabby area (Brighton?).
>>1092767
Brighton isn't in London m8
>>1092756
>>1092767
Baker Street is stupid, don't go there.
You want to be in Hackney. Specifically Dalston. Depends what kinds stuff you want to do, but you can get a cheap(ish) can of Polish beer there, roam the streets, and get into trouble.
If you want to eat some good British food, visit the Quality Chop House in Farringdon. Exmouth Market there is pretty good.
The main thing you should do is drink some good pints of beer in a good pub. try the Dove on Broadway Market.
All this stuff is within striking distance of Hackney.
I repeat: hackney. East London is good. Rest of London is bad.
Meant to be traveling to Istanbul next Sunday for a holiday with my girlfriend. Should I be concerned given ANOTHER bombing has just occurred today?
It doesn't phase me too much but... it's still a bit scary.
RIP in peace anon
>>1092520
I'd cancel and do something else if it were me.
If you can't, I'd certainly register with your own embassy and have smart phones that work while you're there.

There's like 10 million people in Istanbul.
Even if there's another bombing, it will maybe kill 10 people.
You're more likely to get hurt riding in a turkish cab.
