I need to "find myself" and to do this I want to go and live in the wilderness and prove to myself that I can survive. So does anyone know any good places to do this, where I can live off the land in complete solitude. If possible in a snow forest without bears.
you sound like you haven't thought much at all about this
>>1096791
Fighting bears is a part of finding yourself.

this person is correct.
hey /trv/ might be going to new york soon, I love big cities and want more than anything to see all the sights and learn and play and work it up in an international and multicultural and business city of the world like new york I might be going there for a few weeks or months please help me /biz/ what should I do I really want to live and see and be in and out new york
If you want to live here have money. To visit get a Time Out guide.
I don't really get what you are asking. Are you asking for advice on a matter or just generally things in new york to do?
Also I am assuming by New York, you mean the city and not the state.
>>1097849
anyway, I'll let you know a few things I've learned from visiting. Firstly, to get a decent view of the city you don't have to pay a load of money to go up the empire state building, the world trade center, or the rock. In fact, I would never recommend going up the empire state building, cause then you wont see the empire state building. Of the three I would say the Rockefeller tower is the best, cause you are pretty much in the middle, you can see central park, the financial district, the esb, and pretty much everything. But in reality if you are there for a while, like a few months, just get friendly with a security guard, janitor, banker, anybody who works in a fairly tall, non-landmarked building. As long as you are actually friends with them and not just using them, I'm sure they would be happy to let you up there. Personally I've not tried that in New York, but done similar things in Montreal and Portland.
Food wise if you are looking to save money don't go to eat where tourists would usually be - empire state building, financial district, times square ect. Instead head towards harlem or queens to get decent valued food. Less safe maybe, but still a lot safer than most of the world.

So I'm thinking of planning a trip around the country with an Amtrak USA rail pass for next year. They cost a little under $500 and are good for 8 different segments over a period of up to 15 days.
Does anyone have any experience specifically with a USA rail pass? Apparently they are only good for coach seats, so it certainly wouldn't be ideal, but 8 segments could possibly get me to Cleveland, DC, New Orleans, San Antonio, Los Angeles, Emeryville (near Oakland I guess) and Chicago, plus all the sights to see along the way - All for $500 (for the tickets anyway). I'd certainly be interested in hearing if any of you have any experience with taking similar trips around the USA, or any thoughts on the idea itself.
Oh, and one last thing. I don't want any silver-spoon babbies coming in here telling me it's awful because they are used to traveling in 100% comfort all the time. So let's just get that out of the way now.
Pic related is apparently a map of Amtrak's routes.
Oh, and discussion regarding long distance amtrak travel in general is fine, too.
>>1096708
Well, OP, amtrak has some more luxurious and scenic routes, such as the commuter rails of the northeast, the silver zephyr, VA to FL autotrain, and so on. Think about train travel (and the location of stations) being about the lousiest place in town crimewise maybe the same tier as Greyhound in lots of stations, and that you will want some money to get around and sightsee, like a taxi from this shit part of town. If this budget of $500 is the only real selling point, consider that I took American round trip from Miami-Chicago for St. Patrick's weekend for $112 round trip. I also just booked a Frontier Ft. Myers to NY, round trip of $70 coming up in 2 weeks (some rates were as low as $19 each way). I'm flying from desired airports right into cities I wish to be in, the fastest way possible. Look for some deals and consider that budget again. I highly recommend all the Amtrak scenic routes, but is it worth days of travel in a chair on normal routes?

>>1096726
The money isn't really the selling point, I really wanna see the country up close. I never did it before because the roomettes are so expensive and I wasn't sure if I wanted to spend big money to only see a little bit. The idea of going to various parts of the country and seeing everything in between makes the trip sound more appealing.
The main routes i had in mind were the california zephyr and coast starlight (from LA to emryville mostly), but I also wouldn't mind seeing the capital and travelling through the southern U.S.
Hey /trv/ it's been awhile since I visited this board.
Anyway, I'm planning a road trip for this summer from Virginia to California, but I want to campout at night rather than sleeping in my car or renting a motel. Are there any websites or do you all know of any good campgrounds that I can campout at? Any tips or warnings?
>>1096683
Oh and I might go to Hawaii any info about camping in Hawaii or any info at all would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
>>1096683
Are there any must see campgrounds?
>>1097457
California has quite a few in the central northern areas, keep in mind that the ones inside Parks will usally not have hook ups (they're reserved for the people who volunteer to manage the area)
Why do people need to take selfies while traveling? Is everyone really so conceited nowadays that they need their daily affirmation via social media? It seems more prevalent while traveling.
Pic most certainly related.
People take selfies everyday regardless of travel. Traveling has nothing to do with it.
>>1096648
Why the fuck do you care what sort of pictures other people take? Are you just looking for things to be bothered about? Relax and quit being upset by nothing.
>If you don't like selfies, don't take any.
>>1096648
It's fucking embarrassing and cringe worthy, isn't it? Will your internet friends not believe that you've traveled somewhere unless you have photographic evidence?
In the Vatican, moronic tourists would spend two seconds looking at a piece of art that probably took decades to finish, snap a selfie, and then move on to the next one so they could get to McDonalds before closing time. No appreciation of what they were looking at whatsoever. Why bother traveling in that case?
Thinking about backpacking across the Caribbean after I graduate. How feasible is this? How much will it cost me?
Going by your extremely precise itinerary, I can confidently estimate it will be about tree fiddy.
Jesus's shoes are really expensive.

You know they are disconnected islands, right?
Is May a good time to visit Venice? Thinking of going for 3-4 days. Anything I should absolutely see while I'm there?
Now is a good time to see Venice because it gets worse every year.
>>1096515
what do you mean?
>>1096517
Tourist infestation. It got bad to the point where the natives are leaving in large amounts every year.

*Note about the JR Rail Pass*
Many people ask about whether or not the JR Rail Pass is worth it. It depends on your itinerary.
Plug your itinerary into Hyperdia to determine ticket costs, then compare to the below JR Pass options:
>7 day Pass: 29,110¥
>14 day Pass: 46,390¥
>21 day Pass: 59,350¥
Please check the /trv/ sticky before asking questions. It's filled with links to great resources, many of them specific to Japan travel.

What store has the best 3dpd nudie mags in tokyo
>>1096439
Generally, convenience stores.
>>1096417
Them why didn't you use metric system?
Anyway I'm 1.7m 80kg and I'm near the border of the Japanese sizes. Clothes for me are LL and it goes up to LLL on normal stores. Maybe you can try using LLL or you can try the stores for foreigners selling american sizes but I imagine they will be considerably more expensive than in USA. I don't know how that would compare to your prices.
Is Guatemala worth backpacking?
>>1096385
Yes, it is.
I'm from Guatemala, ask anything
>>1096385
I just spend last February there backpacking. It's fairly easy and despite initial concerns I didn't have any single problem there.
There is a pretty obvious backpacker trail which is packed with backpackers and package tourists and then there are other spots where you won't find any of them
Absolutely. Never planned to go there but heard so many good things while I was in Mexico. The energy there is amazing and if you're into healthy living, hiking, nature, etc it has everything. The partying is as good as anywhere else but I'd highly recommend it
Hey guys, I'm going to China next Saturday. Do you know a good VPN to get internet access there?
which city
>>1096158
Shanghai
>>1096159
how long, what do you plan to do there
Want to move near San Jose
I can't figure out which option to use, but I'm leaning towards the train. I'm open to anything though, even backpacking. I want the best experience possible on the way there since CA will probably be so radically different and I've never been to a big city before. I also want to meet tons of people on the way.
I figured asking /n/ would be the best avenue here
hope you have a lot saved up. first+last+security deposit is going to run you at least $3-5k, with monthly rent of $1500 for a one bedroom apartment, even in the shitty parts of town. and you need a car to reasonably get around, or be prepared for a 10 minute drive to take 90 minutes with all the stops and transfers.
sorry to shit on your parade, just want you to be forewarned instead of waiting til you get here to get hit by sticker shock.
SJ doesn't really have a big city feel, it's more like one giant suburb.
>>1096203
This
Grew up there, downtown is THE only place that gives that big city place. Be careful, crime of all sorts has been on a rise over the past few years.
The general consensus is /trv/ is mostly white dudes traveling. My question is how does your skin color play out when you travel?. I've been pretty much all over Europe and i've been confused with everything from black to arab to N. African. But i'm a Hispanic (Dominican) from the US.
Some locals were friendly (Spain, Italy), others were kind racist (Germany, Czech,Slovakia) but didnt bother me, and some were curious (Montenegro, Serbia). So where are good countries to meet, hangout, and fuck locals as a non-white outside of the US and L. America?
>the general consensus
nigga wut
>white
>tall
>more and more /fit/ each month
You can guess the rest.
>>1095959
>Some locals were friendly (Spain, Italy)
Lol these countries are full of Hispanics anyway
>>1095973
Also helped that I can speak both Spanish and Italian.
Hi /trv/
Have any of you ever gone to a school in Latin America with an intensive Spanish program for any long period of time (6 months or more)? I'm interested in going since I need to learn Spanish quickly and also want a short break from monotonic North American life.
Please share thoughts, experiences, recommendations for different cities, countries, etc.
Thx
Don't learn 3rd rate Spanish in Latin America, go to Spain.

I did 5 days at Antiguena in Antigua and a couple of friends did a month there. I found it pretty helpful, my friends even more so. It cost me 100USD for the lessons and I paid an extra 65 for a homestay with three meals provided. The home stay was worth it, although some people complained about the meals, but I guess that depends on the family you stay with. They also offer a free excursion every afternoon which is quite nice.
I did feel that perhaps Antigua wasn't the best place to study Spanish as it is very easy to fall back on English as most people will understand. However, if you put your mind to it and only use Spanish then it will definitely be worth it. From what I understand the Spanish spoken in Guatemala and Mexico are very good for studying as they speak quite slowly and pronounce everything. Good luck, hope this helps!

Texas
Though I'm not a spaniard I've lived most of my life in Barcelona. Apparently this place is really popular with tourists, so I thought I'll just offer some advice to any of you who plan on coming here or already are and want to know anything that isn't in your average tourist guide.
Pic related is my favourite tourist attraction (since I'm also an autistic /n/igger), a historic tram retaining it's original line from 1901 and original cars from 1906.
>>1095648
Have you ever been to Primavera Sound, the music festival? I'm going this june and I'm really excited. Any advice?
South american whose main board for a long time was /mu/ and never really got the chance to see many of his favourite bands live
>>1095664
Oh shit you got me there, I'm not really much into music, so I've never been to any of those festivals. I can help you with anything around it, though I don't know much about the festival itself.
>>1095664
lol, I was going to ask the exact same thing, also south american going there for the first time who used to browse /mu/
anyway, >>1095648 , are 4 days enough to do sightseeing around Barcelona? Other than Sagrada Familia, Camp Nou, beaches, Barri Gotic and Park Güell, what other things you recommend?
I want to go somewhere solo in Europe in April. Things I want:
>outdoorsy activities
>day hikes
>scenery and nature
>preferably mild or warm
Suggestions?
>>1095575
There are like a dozen regions in Europe that fit your bill:
- Italian alps
- Slovenian alps
- French alps
- Pyrenees
- Sierra Nevada in Spain
- Mountains in central Italy
- Balkan mountains (Bosnia via Montenegro to Macedonia)
- Greece (literally half the country is mountains and wilderness)
- Inner regions of Albania
- and more
Pyrenees
>>1095606
Are those areas hike-able in April though? That's my main concern. Afraid it might be too early.
