*Note about the JR Rail Pass*
Many people ask about whether or not the JR Rail Pass is worth it. It depends on your itinerary.

Plug your itinerary into Hyperdia to determine ticket costs, then compare to the below JR Pass options:
>7 day Pass: 29,110¥
>14 day Pass: 46,390¥
>21 day Pass: 59,350¥

Please check the /trv/ sticky before asking questions. It's filled with links to great resources, many of them specific to Japan travel.

Going to Toronto (from New York) for 3 days in the beginning of April since I'm bored, have never been there, and have a few days off. Hockey Hall of Fame and a Laffs game are guaranteed, but looking for a few more suggestions of things not to miss. Blue Jays are away the days I'm there, is the CN Tower cool or just tourist bait? Aquarium?

depends what you're into man

been there recently, many people say the CN tower is overrated but I had fun, pic related - you get a birds eye view of the blue jays stadium and stuff

also another good thing to do is to rent a bike and go to the Toronto island for the day, it's great, I'll post a shit photo of what it looks like on the way back, looks really good if you can time it right and get the ferry home as the sun sets

Frenchie here. I'm going to visit my sister who's moving to Montréal. I'm going to move at the end of January because it's the only moment i'm free.
So far i can find flights for 650€ to go from Genova to Canada. Is it a decent price ?
Also some guys told me i should not travel there for the winter because "it would be too cold for me". Is it true ? I live in the Alps some i'm used to live with -15°/-20° and snow everywhere in winter.

Also any places to recommand ? I'm planning to stay 2/3 weeks in Canada.

that's a decent price but youu can probably find cheaper if you search around a little more. I used to find flights from London to the central US for between 500-550 euro, but maybe flights from Genova are more expensive since it's a smaller airport. Wait until September before you buy the tickets, anyway; there's no reason to buy 10 months in advance.
It can get a lot colder than -20 in montreal, but it'll definitely be a picturesque time to visit.
>>
If you really want the cheapest flight, check out Wow air. Montreal to Reyjavik for $100, and then a lot of connecting flights to Europe for $150.

It wont be too cold for you. There's an off chance it could be -40 or something, but nobody does anything when it's that cold outside anyways. Below -20, things don''t usually seem much colder. There's no humidity, so you don't get as cold.
>>
Hey OP, I'm French too.
I subscribed to Air France's deal.
You can get direct flight from Paris to Montreal for around 550-650 euros, if you book it at least 40 days before. Just wait for the special deals. It happens at least once every 2 months.

Oh look, this thread again.

/trv. has pretty consistently opposed adding flags every time somebody brings it up, over a number of years.

Reasons include the fact that flags lead to shitposting about the flags on boards that have them, and where a person is posting from (or using a proxy from) add nothing to the discussion and lead to people judging posts based on an irrelevant and often fraudulent indication of where a person is at the moment, etc.

But if we want to go through it again, I would vote "no" on flags... again... if a vote were taken.

On an unrelated topic, sage is my favorite spice.

>sage is my favorite spice

you'redoingitwrong.jpg

in spite of that the content of you post is correct. they would clarify some small things (like what a poster means by "backpacking"), but generally flags just lead to flag shitposting.
>>
>>1099030
>they would clarify some small things (like what a poster means by "backpacking"),

Would not even do that, as you'd have to assume that the flag represents where the person is from, not just where they are posting from. On a travel board, that might not be a correct assumption.

Gday /trv/

I'm off to Vietnam on Thursday with my girlfriend and we'll be based in Saigon for the majority of the trip, with a few trips out to the Mekong Delta and Cu Chi Tunnels.

Any advice on the area? I've been to SE Asia a few times before but never Vietnam, anything i should be on the lookout for in terms of sights/locations to visits while over there that isn't the typical "found on TripAdvisor" location?
Any foods that are a must to try?
What's the best way to avoid losing a kidney?

People in Vietnam are markedly less friendly to tourists than in other SEA countries I find. More so in the north though, Saigon is fairly western friendly. Tourism is relatively new, just be glad no one is shooting at you.
>>
>>1098539
They're not as openly friendly as others, but it's a mistake to call them UNfriendly because that implies they go out of their way to make you feel unwelcome. I think what made me feel most uncomfortable was their body language -- the smile isn't used so much by the Vietnamese. Doesn't mean they're not happy, but I guess that's a big contrast to Thailand, "the land of smiles"

We took buses to get out to Mekong, but once there we rented a motorbike and discovered a lot of funky little tourist attractions (okay we found them with the help of our guidebook, but they were still pretty off the beaten path)
>Any foods that are a must try
Anything and everything, especially in Saigon. Don't buy dinner at a restaurant; just walk around the streets at night looking for street food stalls. I wouldn't care if the war was still going on; I'd still go to Nam for the food.
>What's the best way to avoid losing a kidney
Don't be a disrespectful cunt tourist like so many people are. I felt really ashamed on behalf of other tourists I saw while I was there. Not that they were always being drunk/disorderly; usually it was just being totally insensitive to the fact that they were guests in another country. That's okay in melting pots like Europe, but not in traditional societies like Nam.
>>
>>1098528

Tbh, if your only visiting the south your missing out on a lot, although i dont speak for everyone lots of people that ive talked to liked the north better. Combination of less businessy and built up, more traditional and better natural attractions, id also say the North has more important cultural and historical attractions too, but to be fair Ho Chi Minh city also has a fair bunch that the north dont have and cant compete with (Presidential palace + Chu Chi).

I found a good place to search for unique souvenirs in HCMC was Dan Sinh market, although i doubt much of it is real (if any) they do sell a bunch of military memorabilia that you cant find elsewhere in the world, and if you plan on getting one of those 'american army zippos' its the cheapest place.

I found HCMC okay, though i didn't really like the vibe of the main tourist area, just like middle aged men hanging out in bars and the normal tourist stuff, i think i thought it would be a bit more like Hanoi but i was very wrong, good thing is all the tourist centered stuff is mainly in a single area so its not so bad at 11pm at night outside there.

Anyway yeh, advice is to go north if you have time, i wouldnt want to spend a few weeks just down south, but if you only have a week trip advisor attractions are pretty good.

What are your thoughts on living completely primitive? Perhaps I'm a coward but I can't stand the thought of paying bills and dying; airplanes and photos do not suffice. I have been thinking of joining a certain program to learn, and then dropping everything to truly live away from everything. I know it's what most would call stupid, but I say the same to how they live. I don't care about the chance of death, I would rather die a terrible, starved or even mauled death than live in any town.

Is anybody else like this or all you all camera-for-eyes tourists, because that's all I've seen.

Hey /trv/, I am a migrant from /k/ and I am looking for some people to go on a trip with. I posted a thread on /out/ which explains some details, but they suggested to look here, as well.

Here is the scoop- I am looking to tour Chernobyl/Pripyat either in early July or mid September. I will go alone, but would rather have some company and maybe make a new friend. I don't have any friends left in real life that will travel, so I am reaching out to strangers now.

The details are in the other thread, but here is a quick recap:

>I am from PA
>24 and male
>Looking to take around 10 day trip
>Fly into Kiev
>Spend about 4 days in Chernobyl/Pripyat
>Spend the other days enjoying Kiev and maybe going elsewhere

Overall it's looking like it'll be around 2,300USD for the trip including everything. The more people that go, the lower the cost (substantially lower). For me, the plane ticket will be around 1200 bucks.

If you are interested, let me know and i will give you my throwaway email where we can talk about more details and I'll explain a bit more about myself.

The fuck would you be doing in Pripyat for 4 days?

a) it's almost exclusively guided tours now that take you on the same route everytime. The days where you could bribe a local to get you in seem to be over. That also means you won't be able to go inside most of the buildings because of safety regulations, probably just the community center and maybe hotel.

b) there isn't that much to see that would fill up 4 days. I saw everything I wanted and more in just 8 hours.

c) Kiev is fun as shit, though. Definitely recommend spending that time there and hanging out. You can probably find a girl to date for a week while you're there if you're moderately outgoing and not hideous.
>>
How feasible is it to arrive at Kiev, go visit Pripyat and leave Ukraine in two days?
I'd just arrive in Kiev, go to Pripyat probably the same day and do the tour and leave the country in the next day. Is this possible? My interest is seeing the ghost city before going to SEA.
>>
>>1098526
Not just seeing Pripyat. Red Forest, Duga, the reactor site, and some other nearby villages. Maybe 3 days.

As for Kiev, I think it'll be pretty interesting, though I'm not interested in finding dates. Depending on how easy it is for Westerners to get around, I'd maybe try and head to Poland for a day, as well.

>>1098569
I'd say fairly feasible. You'd have to have lots of stamina, though, because the tours start at like 8am and end around 7-8pm. So your plane would have to get in pretty early for you to do the whole thing in a day.

Me and a friend have been planning on going hiking in Europe at the beginning of this summer and we're hoping that you guys could provide with information or advice. We are interested in preferably hiking from hut to hut although I have a good tent to bring if it's needed. We are planning on being out and about for about 2 weeks. Right now we are looking at the Dolomites and hoping that it's not to expensive. Is it possible to follow a trail for a long duration and find accomodation that isn't too expensive?

We are of course open to other suggestions. Corsica and the GR20 is an option for us even if we think that it might be a bit too much suffering..

I have climbed Kilimanjaro earlier and done some other trekking so I have some experience while my friend hasn't although he is in good physical shape.

my only experience with huts in Europe was along the GR11 trail in the Pyrenees. There are staffed huts that you pay to stay in, but more common are public huts which, in Spain were typically either completely trashed or like pic related. In Andorra the huts were clean, though very basic.
I only did ten days so I didn't get a great sense of the overall quality.

I've extensively explored the bothy system in Scotland but that's quite different to what you're thinking.
If there's an online resource for all huts in Europe, I'd love to know about it.

Hadn't heard of them, so I looked it up. Looks like they are technically legal, as long as nobody's getting pimped or coerced. Assuming the women are free-agent independent contractors, don't pick up on the street, and they all keep their own passports, appears to be OK per the law.
