Going to Berlin in August for two weeks with my brother and girlfriend.

He's going there for a conference, and after that we're pretty much free to do whatever we want.

Since we're in Europe, we figured it would be a waste to just stay in Berlin, so we were wondering what other areas are near Berlin that we can reach via train or something and air bnb around? We're big on the food and nature aspects.

My brother was mentioning going to Amsterdam, but we need more ideas.

Any suggestions would be seriously considered as this is our first time going to Europe.

Hamburg, Lübeck, Schwerin, Dresden, Prague
all easily accessible by train from Berlin
Potsdam is basically Berlin suburbs

Amsterdam is good idea, although it's already like 6 hours away by train.
>>
>>1107608

We don't mind taking the train out to other areas. We've got 2 weeks after all. Spending it all in Berlin seems like a waste.

Is there any other locations that are farther out like Amsterdam? Taking a train is no problem.

This are good cities to visit. I'd also add Munich and Bremen.

If you're more into nature, give the Sächsische Schweiz or the Mecklenburg Lake District a try.

I'll probably be going to Curaçao this summer, and will be there for a little less than 2 weeks.

Are there things I should definitely see? I mean the island is like 500 square kilometers, but it's easy to miss things on such a small island. Missed a lot in Liechtenstein as well.

Stories about Curaçao would be really nice to hear as well.

USD 45 in the beginning.
Every time (in taxi aprox) is USD 20 or 30.
Some beaches are not public (that means more money).
Caracao have a cute center.

I just moved from the US to a 2nd-tier French city for work. I moved into a town where I don't know anyone, and I don't speak any French.

How does /trv/ meet people when dropping into a new place completely foreign and completely alone? Or is this just the traveling lifestyle? I won't have the advantage of a hostel social scene since I'm actually living here and not just passing through.

Nice picture. Very comfy.

Can't actually help you.
Maybe try a social media app? You could meet people who speak English to show you around and introduce you to more people.
>>
Why are you moving to that city? Work? Study? Other reason?
If it's work or study, you'll inevitably meet with people regularly, unless you're a freelancer or studying online.
>>
>>1107424
Coming from the US, only social media app used for meeting strangers is Tinder. Could give it a shot, just need to hide it from the GF. Any popular social media apps for Europe?

Moved for work. The field office I am working out of is very small - only a handful of people - and they're all much older. Not the type of people I would normally hang out with.

In a few weeks I'll be taking a 4 day trip to Chicago with my girlfriend. What are some essential things to do/eat while there according to /trv/?

As an example of stuff we're into, some of the things we have planned so far include:
-Chinatown food tour
-Surgical Science Museum
-Barcade (undecided on location)
-Cheesie's Pub and Grub
-Obligatory Bean picture (pic related)

Any and all suggestions welcome.

I'd 100% look into the dining and night life scenes. We have tons of amazing restaurants for all different kinds of palates and bars with really unique atmospheres. I'd recommend some, but everyone has their own taste. A quick yelp search will give you a ton to look for.

I'd recommend
-Checking out the Sear's (Willis) Tower sky deck. You can also have some drinks in the signature room for a great view.
-See a game at Wrigley. Even if you don't like baseball, it's a great time.
-Visitng Navy Pier
-Taking a walk down the Magnificent Mile
-Museum of Science and Industry is always very enjoyable
>>
>>1107321
>You can also have some drinks in the signature room for a great view.
Definitely essential and pretty romantic, and can be squeezed onto the tail end of any night, just ride the elevator, buy a cocktail and take some pictures (tell her the ladies bathroom view is possibly the best).
Since you might be a foodie...Might enjoy the original brownie and a drink at the lovely tiffany decorated Palmer House, as well as their tour.

It's a good central location for a walking tour afterwards, or a bite to eat at liquor license #1 german restaurant Berghoffs.

Food:
If you're going to Chicaaago, you need to get a deep dish pizza.
Look up Lou Malnati's.

And you need to get yourself a beef (a beef sandwich with that Giardiniera).
Al's is pretty good for that.

Do not fuck this up, anon. It's important!

As for stuff to do. This anon >>1107321 is on point but I want to add that the science museum is not just good but in fact unmissable. They have a WW2 German U Boat and the space centre is great with the Apollo 8 command module.

I also recommend the canal architecture tour. Put that in the unmissable category, too. It was a bit pricey but worth every penny. Our guide was brilliant as the boat goes down the river and back again. Talked for an hour or so and it flew by.

I also like the art museum. Some iconic stuff there including American Gothic. They had a Magritte expo on when I was there too - awesome.

And just in case you're a European, watch the soccer/football at The Globe.

Chinatown is OK but there are many bigger and more interesting Chinatowns. If you've been to the ones in NYC or San Fran it'll be a disappointment.

Overall, you're gonna need to fork over some coin, but you'll have a great time. It's one of the best cities in the world.

Are you the anon from before?

Some things to do in Pensacola including vising the National Museum of Naval Aviation (cool aeronautics museum with old war planes, simulators and IMAX documentaries), visiting the white, sandy beaches (traffic can be bad and there's a $1 toll) and visiting the Historic District, just to name a few. My personal favorite food downtown is McQuire's Irish Pub. They have great $10 burgers (I've never actually tried the Irish food but I have tried the 10 cent soup and it is awesome). Other than that, there's Hopjacks Pizza Kitchen and Taproom with several Southern brews and Belgian fries in some sort of cracked out dipping sauce (I recommend the Bacon Ranch or Meat pizzas). There are also zoos and other things to do.

How long of a detour is it to go to New Orleans? One of my favorite cities in the US

I'm going for a 40-day trip to SEA in August. 10 days in Laos then 30 in the Philippines.

I can't decide whether to take check-in luggage or just a carry-on. I travel qutie a lot and always take carry-on only, so I know what's it about, but I don't remember going on such a long trip before so I don't really know.

Any ideas of what I have to give up on if I don't bring check-in luggage on this trip?

also, general Laos thread, as there's already one for the Flips.

why carry-on:

- flying out, I have just 1 hour connection in Bucharest, between different airlines. This means a high chance of losing my check-in right in the beginning.
- less luggage to carry on my back! (big one, that)
- some of the low-costers in SEA that I'll be taking have extra charges for check-in, which sometimes almost doubles the price.

cons:
- tight packing
- risk of having to check-in the carry-on bag anyway because it's bulging, thus defeating the purpose
- have to buy nail-clipper for 0.5USD every time lol

- you tell me ????

as said above, also general Lao thread

Just take carry on, if you buy a bag at the size limit (never had to check mine in btw) you should have more than enough space, you can wash clothes as you go so you don't need many at all, and they're the biggest space stealer. All of the negatives so outweigh being able to take a few things you don't really need that it completely isn't worth it imo.
>>
another thing I probably won't be able to fit into carry-on is shoes, so I'll just have to get by with sandals.

is it too bad? Like, is Manila too dirty to just go in sandals?

I can probably pass by all those clubs that don't let you in in sandals
>>
>>1107142
>another thing I probably won't be able to fit into carry-on is shoes,

Again I manage just fine, and this isn't some RealTraveller shit where I'm trying to prove how thrifty I am, because I really don't think that's the case, but in my 44L backpack for carry on I have space for shoes, everything else and then some left over.

Oh God here we go again.

Look i'll save you some time and maybe you'll delete your thread before it goes the same way it always does. Its basically impossible to do this if you live in the USA and one anon will claim he has done it and it was the best thing ever.

But remember, he is lying. Everyone telling you it can't be done are telling you the truth.
>>

>Its basically impossible to do this if you live in the USA
That is patently false, though. It is still fairly common. I'd be surprised if you ever got empty freight cars like that though. You'll be holding on to the open bars arranged at the end of a tanker or flat bed loaded with girders or some shit.

Also, trying to catch a running train is suicide. You need to learn their schedules so you can get on before it starts moving.

I'm going to Amsterdam on the 12th of july with my cousin. We're both 21 and from Norway. I've booked five nights at " The flying pig downtown" hostel as I've read a lot of good things about them and it is relatively cheap.

I'm still kind of a noob when it comes to travelling in big cities and I'm usually not much of a party guy (introverted), but I want to let loose and come out of my shell when I'm here, have some fun and hopefully get some friends, and if I'm super lucky, maybe even a girl for a night.

Does anyone have any good suggestions of things to do or things to see while we are here? Also, does anyone have any experience with this hostel in particular?

I'm also wondering about the whole weed culture in Amsterdam. What's the legality of it? How common is it? I was raised in a very anti-drug family so it's not a primary objective for me to go out and get some, but is this something people pass around and expect you to enjoy if they are feeling friendly? I don't know if I would try it or not. Though, it's not really a big deal.

Also, any other general tips for traveling, staying in a hostel, making friends, having fun on the trip etc. are appreciated.

Thanks!

re: weed

tldr; smoke a little but not too much

young people smoke way too much weed at once, get sent to the stratosphere and then can't function the rest of the day

same thing with edibles, they will be too powerful for you so avoid them. just take a puff or two and go about your day/night

it's not a real great place to go club since booze is so expensive

just cruise around on a bike, find some cafes, read a book by the canals

at nighttime just hang out in the hostel common room and there will be lots of people looking to party

might be fun to do a pub crawl but don't mix booze and weed, just stick to one or the other

Hello everyone!

My girlfriend and I want to visit Paris for a week this summer. Do you have any tips or ideas about where we should go (besides the meme locations like Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame etc.)?

Anything we should avoid?
Know of any decent places that we could grab a snack from without being ripped off?

Hi guys, I'm going to be in Germany for just under a week next month, specially in Hamburg.

What are some interesting things to see in and around the city for a non-Euro? Which are the best ways to travel around the city?
10 posts and 1 images submitted.

The subway gets you everywhere pretty easily. And in the inner city you can reach a lot by foot. The 'Reeperbahn' is a famous street and quarter mostly known for its nightlife with casinos, clubs, restaurants, political activists, gangs, brothels, music/concert places and all kinds of things in a mix. Nice to have seen it at night but be very careful not to get robbed or scammed, don't let anyone talk to you and so on. Last time I've been there I noticed a lot of immigrants like to spend their time there too as they have nothing else to and might assimilate into the rather criminal culture of the quarter. A really nice hotel is to the right side of where your pic ends its called the 'Vier Jahreszeiten', pretty expensive though, but some /trv/ people like that.
As already told Hamburg has a vivid music scene you might catch some nice concerts.

If you have a lot of time you can even go to Bremen, its about 1.5 train hours to the southwest and has a nice old inner city. It's a bit of Hamburgs small brother, but don't tell the people from Bremen, they might get angry. In Hamburg and Bremen you could visit a brewery (Astra, Beck's, .. )
>>
Hamburg Native here.

Do not go to Bremen and don't even mention Bremen to any local. There is some serious rivalry going on, especially when it comes to Premier League Soccer. :)

If you need a break from the city, go to the Baltic Sea, not far away, city of Lübeck is especially beautiful, entire old town is Unesco heritage.

Well, Hamburg has a lot to offer, yet it is small enough to be able to be comfortable here.

Public transportation is expensive, but gets you everywhere safe and on a great schedule. You can also rent city bikes (www.stadtrad.hamburg.de) which is pretty cool, because first 30 minutes are free, so I always use it to get me from a to b, then drop it off and grab another one later.

Taking a Sunday walk around the big inner city lake (Aussenalster) is a Hamburg tradition.

Reeperbahn, as mentioned before, is the main party district with some strip joints and sex shops left, but is transforming more into a clubbing scene with bars, restaurants, musicals & theaters. On weekends the crowd can be somewhat agressive when drunk, but it is very well police enforced, so only real issue for a normal visitor is getting your wallet stolen when drunk.

Visit Hafencity (the newly built neighborhood at the river Elbe) with the new soon to be opened Elbphilharmonie.

Get yourself to Övelgönne (by bus or car or even bike) and walk along the river towards Blankenese, really beautiful. Famous bar for a sundowner for locals is called "Strandperle". Further up river another one is called "Kajüte"!

Do you need recommendations for overnight stay? Motel One is a chain that offers cheap room rates, standard, modern, clean. Nothing fancy but good value for price.

Food: Cafe Leonar, located in the jewish area of town with nice atmosphere.

Anyhow, if you are still around and have more questions, ask away, I shall check back periodically.

Yeah dude a week would be decent. There are some cool pubs. the blind beggar is where apparently Jack the Ripper would hang out, also the kray twins shot someone in that pub.
It's close to Shoreditch which is a decent night out.
If you like smoking weed/hash there is a cafe you can buy/smoke at, maybe find some young locals/students and ask them. The cafe is just behind the hospital.

Bare in mind the whole area is very Muslim and if you are white you will be a minority, but it's ok and mainly non threatening. Though maybe don't be drinking openly in the street.

Hey guys, I´ll be living in Thai for around 9 months at the province of chonburi.
And got some questions:

Any advice abou thai and the sorroundings of chonburi?
Any advice on Thai ppl customs and manners?
How´s internet in Thailand?
It is cheap to travel through the country?
Are there things I should avoid beside traps?
Best Thai food dishes I should try?

Any adv is welcome, I just know the basic things about thailand.

Check out Sriracha, home namesake of the sauce, don't let Pattaya's rep scare you away. It's the biggest city in the province and has more going for it than the infamous Walking Street. Especially as an expat. Don't worry about avoiding traps. It's a non issue. Try all of the food, even the bugs. You're there for months.
>>
I envy you, OP. That's a dream for me, move there for sometime. As you see, i never lived there but i know a lot about "the land of smiles". I can't answer all the questions actually but i will try to help you.

>any advice on Thai ppl customs and manners?
As i told, Thai is the land of the smiles. Everyone smiles for everything, even if they are sad. But be careful, not every time it can be a positive smile, try not be persuated by it.
Also, Thais don't like people yelling. Don't touch thais head for no reason, it's very disrespectful and unpolite. They are very nacionalist, so if you eulogize their country, they will be very proud of you. Also, never pay the price that sellers tell you. Bargain rules. They do everytime.

>it is cheap to travel through the country?
Depends. Some things are expensive and others are cheap. Depends of your coyntry's currency. But the day-a-day wastes are very cheap. Food, rents, very cheap actually. Touristic places are overpriced, btw.

>are there things I should avoid beside traps?
Scammers. There are scammers everywhere in Thailand. Take care if someone approches you speaking english and trying to help you. Always remember: is too good to be true? fake! Also, do not rent jetskis, it's another scam but much expensive. DON'T DO DRUGS. Thailand is not the country for that. Or you will in jail, or will pay an absurd bribe to police. Also, bribes are common.

Where are you from, and where did this opportunity to move to Thailand? I'm interested.

I expected i helped you somehow.

Thanks for the adv anon, I´m from Mexico.
A Japanese company will be opening bussines here, so ill be sent as a trainee.
