I'm 19 and I solo traveled to Szczecin, Krakow, and Wroclaw. I also solo traveled through Warsaw on my way to Ukraine. Poland is absolutely safe in every way. iirc Poland has lower violent crime rates than western Euro countries. It's basically a poorer version of Germany that's catching up quite quickly. 10 years ago my answer might have been different but Poland in 2016 is quite safe.

travelling is no big deal, basically anywhere you go you'll always find something new, if you are into it.

Amtrak actually does not own any of those lines; it leases them all from the various big freight railroads that own them. The reason why there is not a diagonal northwest-to-Southwest route is because one was never built.

Coit tower, Alcatraz, Chinatown, Haight-Ashbury, Pier 39, MOMA, Botanical Gardens, are all good, touristy things in SF. I'd recommend at least looking into those to see if you're interested.

Haight-Ashbury is fun if youre into alt culture of any kind. There are lots of fun and unique shops all around that area as well as other major tourist destinations all in walking distance (MOMA, Golden Gate Park, de Young Museum, botanical gardens, and the Japanese Tea Garden).

If you're into /out/ there's Muir Woods and Marin Headlands right outside of SF. Both are really beautiful areas with good trails.

There's Mt Diablo in Concord, which has the 2nd largest view in the world, but there's really nothing else in that area.

Berkeley has UC Berkeley, I dont know if they give tours during the summer; but you can always walk the campus. There's also Telegraph street, which is kinda like Haight-Ashbury (lots of history with the hippies and later punk culture).

I've been a Bay Area native for 10 years and this anon knows what they're talking about. The designated tourist trap area of SF is Fisherman's Wharf, but Coit Tower, Chinatown, MOMA, Marin Headlands, etc. are all where the real fun is for someone visiting. I would add visiting the Exploratorium on one of their adults only nights if you're into science or want to see some Bill Nye craziness. The Berkeley campus has a problem with crime even though it's a really great school, so don't walk around their at night. You'll be fine if you go with a tour group though.

Another oddity in SF is Japantown, which is the largest Japanese community in the US. Walking through the Kintetsu Mall, buying some candy, playing the games in their tiny arcade, and seeing a movie at the nearby Sundance Kabuki theater is a fun way to spend the afternoon if you like Japanese culture. Off the Grid, a food truck event in Fort Mason, Urban Putt, an indoor mini-golf course and restaurant, Free Gold Watch, a pinball arcade and design firm, are all cool things to see while you're there if you're looking for weirdness.

SF and Mill Valley are both incredible places to get coffee and pastries if you like cafes. Equator in Mill Valley, and Sightglass, Four Barrel, and Philz in San Francisco are fantastic. Peet's has a flagship store in the Marina if you like them, and their original store in Berkeley has a small museum section in the back. If either of you guys are into coffee, I could be more detailed. It's only my opinion though.

Brunch is a huge thing in San Francisco. I haven't had a ton of brunches, but Blackwood in the Marina is modern and upscale while still having great food and staying somewhat casual. People came in wearing hoodies and exercise clothing and nobody cared. The Palace of Fine Arts is within walking distance, and you can get some beautiful pictures if you go there in the early morning on a weekday before other tourists start swarming it.

Hey, not OP here, but have a flight to SFO booked. Is San Fran similar to LA insofar as it's impossible to get around without a car? I wanna cheap out as much as possible on transport and walk for a couple hours everyday, like 5-6 hours. Is it possible to travel from say for example, SFO airport to Union Square on sidewalks or would I have to go really off country? I know that renting a car is pretty cheap but I'm under 21 with no license. Do pedestrians get fucked over outside the CBD?

I once went to the UK after years of almost never experiencing temperatures below 25c, and spent the first few days feeling like I was going to shiver myself to pieces. Was fine after, even though subsequent legs of the trip involved Germany and Scandinavia, further into winter.

Of course when I came back to the equator I had to re-acclimatize (briefly) to the heat again. Walking out the airport was like stepping into a bowl of steaming soup.

I wouldn't view what happened to me on my first trip as a terrible experience so much as an interesting experience, but it ruined vacations for a lot of people in the area.

Back in 2013, when I was nineteen years old and taking my first ever trip overseas and alone, I ended up staying in a hostel five minutes away from Taksim Square in Istanbul. I was right in the middle of all the chaos when the Gezi Park protests erupted and got shot in the back with a rubber bullet by a police officer while walking down a street crowded with shoppers and cars. What happened is that, on the first day of protests, there were very few people upset about what had happened. The owner of the hostel told me and a German I'd befriended that there were some angry hippies down at the park and that we should go check out what was happening and maybe meet some liberal Turkish girls.

We had to walk around for ages before we even found any protesters. 99% of the people on the street were just going about their daily business. Regardless, the police starting shooting tear gas at a dozen socialists who had gathered at a nearby intersection, which is where me and my friend were standing. Then they charged and started firing rubber bullets. I wasn't the only innocent bystander who got clobbered; I saw an elderly man get smacked in the face with a tear gas canister at fairly close range. He'd just been crossing the street and had to get carried away by a few other strangers.

My friend and I both started running down an alleyway to get away from the charging cops. I saw a line of people hauling ass through an open doorway and decided to follow them. It turned out to be the headquarters of the SDP, who were the ones the police were after. I had to hide out in their office for an hour while officers were ramming the door and yelling outside. I thought about jumping from a window onto a rooftop to get away but I stuck around until the police left (somebody told me there was a rule that

Anyway, shit really took off by the end of the day. I remember walking outside and heading back to Taksim, where people were building a giant barricade and stopping traffic. I took a right towards a wide boulevard called Tarlabaşı to get back to my hostel and saw thousands of people streaming up towards Gezi Park. Things quieted down at night but absolutely erupted the next day.

Probably because I was young and stupid (not that I've gotten too much older since 2013 - I was 19 then and am 23 now), I decided to follow along with the protests and take pictures. I ate a metric ton of tear gas and got to find out what it's like to get blasted by an armored vehicle-mounted jet of pepper spray mixed with tear gas.

I left Istanbul about a week and a half later, while the police were still gone from the area, only to travel to Izmir and end up seeing the protests in Gündoğdu Square.

Definitely made for a few interesting stories. Again, I don't count it as an abjectly awful or terrible set of experiences, but I think most people would regard it as such.

Otherwise, I've so far managed to avoid anything awful happening. I did get a flight delayed by 30 hours out of Bogota. Then, on my connection home, I was told that my flight was oversold and that I was going to be bumped to the next available flight.

Given that Delta compensated me with $1200 total in Delta Dollars for use on any future flight, I'm not going to complain too much.

Also gotten Delhi Belly and miserable sicknesses here and there, but I'm still alive and breathing.

Was on a plane that had electrics knocked out by a lightning strike when I was a kid. Made an emergency landing at a small, and very closed, airport in Alabama, where we were on one side of a lowered security gate and vending machines, toilets, etc. were on the other. Got to go out and piss on the plane wheel, so it was not a total loss.
