Hi /trv/. So, I am going to work in France for 8 month, staring in october. I am choosing between cities: Lille, Rennes, Nantes and Marseille. Can somebody give me recommendations or opinions on listed cities?

>>
Hi go to Rennes or Nantes because it's in Brittany avoid Marseille higher delinquancy
>>
well, all cities above are nice. Yes, Marseille may be scary, but that depend where you live in the city.
Lille is very nice, also Nantes and Rennes. I'll go for Lille. I'm from a small town in the countryside of the northen France (60miles from Lille), and people are very friendly. Also, you are near Belgium :)
>>
expat in Lille here. Lille is ok but it's a smallish place. I keep meeting people I know on the streets or while shopping all the time, even though I don't know pretty much anyone.

So if you like big cities, choose Marseille. Also if you like sun or being close to the sea.

the other two options are even more boring than Lille.

Hello /trv/. I am planning on traveling to South Korea in November (right after thanksgiving) for 10 days, and I need some protips on what touristy stuff is worth doing. I plan on visiting Seoul, Busan, the DMZ, and the coasts while I am there.

Additional information on how far Korail/KTX will get me around the country would be nice.

Take this offering of pic unrelated in exchange for knowledge.

As some of you may remember, I've posted here previously about last summer's travel, from France to Mongolia and back by road, through all of Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia.

Well, it's almost summer again, and it's time for my next trip. This year my choice is Africa. Unexplored lands, risk, and freedom. But this also comes with certain annoyances:

- Unable to drive my trusty old Land Rover (importation too risky, retrieval not guaranteed, and some countries refuse diesel and/or left-side driving wheel).

- The factor most travelers know as African Syndrome, which means that any timeline you may have planned and prepare is straight out of the window about two days after arriving in any trans-African travel.

Therefore I've chosen for a simpler (I hope) experience.

I'll be landing in Nouakchott, Mauritania, at which point I'll purchase a small 125cc motorcycle, along with a Mauritanian driver's licence and insurance (contacts in Nouakchott from a friend working in the mining industry).

Following this, I'll be traveling down the African coast, passing through most, if not all the western African countries (all fifteen of them...).

Once arrived in Cameroon, or potentially Gabon, I'll turn east to cross the continent, with the main direction being Kenya. I'll pass through the Central African Republic, as I have friends I'll be visiting in Bangui.

All told, I'm planning for a 4 month trip, but will be leaving without a return ticket. I want to take my time, enjoy the travel, and should I not be able to go all the way to Kenya, I'll just get back from the nearest airport.

Anyone want to come with me? :)

i'm in paris right now and would love to, but i'm pretty broke. good luck, man. sounds like a hell of a trip
>>
just out of curiosity -- how much do you have saved for this?
>>
>>1119485

Approx 5k euros, with hopes to come back with some left over.

I travel using basic, basic services. Sleep in tents more often than not (when not invited somewhere), or in the car, eat local food, or from my stockpile of energy/protein bars, that kind of stuff.

Luxury I'm buying for this trip is a folding camp bed (search "lit picot"), because sleeping on the ground in some areas is a definite no-no.

A few friends and I are planning a trip to L.A. We live about 24 hours away and will stay there 3-4 days. What are some great places to see besides the obvious. Any really good scenic mountain trails outside the city to go to. Good restaurants? Any help would be greatly appreciated

I only hate how you cant do shit without a car there
>>
Trails: Waterman mountain, Hermit falls, and the Grotto in Malibu are all nice and not too difficult.

Restaurants: Philippes, Wurstkuche, El Burrito Jr, Venice Ale House

Obligatory Warnings: LA is geographically huge, you need a car, everything is more expensive than you're used to, there is traffic, the sketchy area is roughly bounded by the 10, 405 and 605 freeways, the air is neither perfect nor nearly as bad as it used to be, and you will probably not see a celebrity in the wild.

I'm trying to immigrate to Canada from Europe, and all immigration forums, whatsapp groups, etc. etc. are just Indians and Pakistanis!

My friend. This is dangerously close to a terrorist/refugee smuggler network. This is the first time I'm hearing about this method regarding legal immigration.

If cost matters, it would be most useful if you'd at least state your current location.

So, I have the opportunity to relocate to any state in the United States save for Hawaii. What state should I move to? Why? I'm currently in Texas.

In couple of months I begin my around-the-world trip. I leave from Barcelona to Asia to begin with, but I really don't know how to reach India. Pakistan seems tricky, and I need an invitation card from a local to get in, and the other way its through Kazakhstan, China and Nepal, but thats around 5.000km longer. What do, /trv/?

Next spring I'm travelling from England to North Carolina by a merchant vessel. The journey should take twenty days.

I'll be staying in my own cabin on the outside of the ship, in the captain's quarters, with a decent view out to sea. There's no internet connection so i'll mostly be reading and writing.

Anyone had any experience doing this? Tips/what to expect? I can watch the captain do his thing up top if I like, and virtually nowhere on the ship is out of bounds. I'm hoping it'll be a small adventure before I reach America.

I was just gathering information for the same thing, also wanted to go to the US from Europe. How much are you paysing and how long is the trip going to be?
>>
>>1125338
That sounds like a cool thing to do OP. 20 days is a long time. I imagine after a few days of seeing everything on the boat you will start to get bored.

Bring audiobooks, mayhe try to buddy up with someone on the boat so you can sit around and talk. Youre talking about 3 weeks on a boat, it could get pretty mind-numbing.

Also i dont know how big and strong the boat is but i hope you arent bothered by seasickness. Going into the middle of the atlantic for that long youre bound to have some wavy days.

Good luck and enjoy
>>
Take some snacks and other luxuries with you. The food will likely be a very limited menu so if there's something you don't like then your options will be very limited.

Most vessels have a DVD and book library but don't expect either to be well stocked.

Things are regimented with set meal times etc. Expect to be on your own alot during the day as everyone else is either resting or working.

In 20 days you will likely meet and get to know the entire crew.

I don't know if you smoke but often the best places to meet and chat are in the smoking areas. Especially if the company has banned smoking in the cabins.

The fact that there is no internet will actually be a good thing as it will make the crew more social as its too boring to hang around your cabin.

Maybe the Captain or First Officer will let you help out a little on the bridge e.g. (keeping lookout with binoculars or something) but if not you might be relegated to just lurking.

Are they really that bad?

The only luggage I've truly had lost was a set of golf clubs, lost by United. Unless the price on a flight is significantly lower, I'll avoid United when I can.
>>

I hate them and all other North American airlines for international flights.

I've been flying domestic and they're a lot better than many of the other alternatives though.

Flying from JFK tomorrow and I have a few TSA questions

1) Do toothpaste/mouthwash/bodywash/etc (all travel sized) need to be in a ziploc baggie if they're in checked baggage? Or can they ONLY be in checked baggage?
2) I have an envelope (bigger envelope, maybe 10 by 6 inches) that's carrying a picture frame with a picture, a card, and a couple other things in my backpack (carry on), will they want me to empty out the contents of the envelope even though it's in my backpack and they can probably see it through the xray?
3) Likewise I have a gift bag are they going to ask me to remove it from my backpack/empty out the contents of it? For this and the above it's that the contents are pretty personal for both of these items.

>>
>>1127527
It's always best to be forthcoming. The envelope needs to be easy to open for the TSA, and the frame needs to be easily taken off to see what's inside. It might even be safer to give the envelope to the TSA directly to inspect. (in order to prevent further suspicion.) And yes the gift bag will need to be emptied and inspected, so you might as well just give that to the agent as well.
>>
>>1127536
Are you sure on the picture frame? It's not glass and it can't be opened.

Do American airports just not have scanners/xray or are they just trying out being a police state for a little bit?

I posted this on /r/ but was wondering if /trv/ could help.

I need HD flyby footage of the Rio Christ Statue for a college editing project, but I'm not doing well on finances. Do you have, or know where I can obtain royalty free footage of such a thing?
