Why not make my own thread eh.
Sup guys, especially dearest Poles. I'll be going to Warsaw in two days, with my gf. We are both in our twenties. Back after a week.
Besides from the usual 'any tips?' question .. specifically looking for nice pubs, and nice mead/mead beer. I love that stuff. Been to Poznan last year and drank loads of the stuff.
>>1145979
You can buy mead easily in any larger alcohol store and hypermarket. Check the label for the water to honey ratio.
Czwórniak - 3 parts water 1 honey
Trójniak - 2 parts water 1 honey
Dwójniak - 1:1
Półtorak - 1 part water 2 parts honey
Pretty much all the store brands are fairly good and beekeepers sometimes sell their products at farmer's markets too. Mead is fairly rare at pubs.
I'm not much into honeyed beer so no advice here.

Gotta get that Półtorak, must be delicious. When/where can I find the farmers' market ?
thanks for your advice brewski

Hello /trv/, this is my first time posting here. I came to ask what I should be prepared for on my trip coming up. Basically what the trip consists of is flying to Oslo, and staying a week there, and traveling around the country side of Norway. Then, we're going to travel to Amsterdam for a couple days, then visit Scotland for a few more days. Any pointers or suggestions would be much appreciated. I forgot to mention that money is not really an issue for us.
>>1145865
Never been to Oslo but you're gonna hear this soon enough so... A week is too much time to spend there
>>1145865
You could spend a day or two in Oslo, take in the sights (the opera, vigelandsparken, holmenkollen, Karl Johansgate, maybe some museums, I don't know...)
Then take the train across the country to Bergen. It crosses Europe's largest high mountain plateau, and makes for some pretty sweet views.
(Along the way you could disembark and go hiking in hardangervidda.)
Then you could spend a day in Bergen, and travel further south from there, to Stavanger. A lot of Norway's most famous sights are along the way. prekestolen, kjerag, lysefjorden, etc. I think there are buses and ferries you can take.
From Stavanger you can then take the plane to Amsterdam.
Nobody on this board knows anything about Norway, so it's probably not the best place to look for advice.
Yeah I`m from Norway and a week is way to much time to spend in Oslo, 2 days is more than enough
So I'm looking into getting an interrail pass since ill be back packing europe. Since it's midnight to midnight how does that work if I activate it mid day and at 10-11 pm I get on a train that goes into the next day, does that automatically take another day off or just ignores it until I arrive at my destination?
Also any other general interrail info and tips appreciated.
According to http://www.seat61.com/Railpass-and-Eurail-pass-guide.htm#Using-a-Eurail-pass
The overnight trains leaving after 19:00 rule...
A Flexi pass normally gives unlimited travel from midnight to midnight, but direct overnight trains leaving after 19:00 count as running the following day, so they only uses up one day of your pass - and it would still only use up one day if you used an onward train after arriving on the sleeper, of course.
So for example, if you travelled on the Phoenix sleeper train from Cologne to Prague, leaving Cologne at 23:13 on August 2nd arriving Prague 11:28 next morning, then travelled on to Cesky Krumlov later that day, this would only use up one day of free travel, and the date you'd write in the box on your pass would be August 3rd.
On the other hand, any trains you wanted to use before catching the sleeper would require another box to be used - say you wanted to go from Amsterdam to Cologne on 2nd August to connect with the sleeper - now you'd use two boxes, one 2 August, one 3 August.
You'd still need to pay the supplement for overnight travel in a couchette or sleeper of course, see the couchette & sleeper page.
To make use of the 19:00 sleeper train rule, you must have validated your pass (so the overall pass validity period starts ticking) on or before the day the sleeper train leaves. In other words, in this example the pass must have been validated at a station and the overall 1 or 2-month validity period started, on or before 2 August, even though the first day written into any of the five 'boxes' on the pass would be 3 August. Obviously with continuous passes this isn't an issue, the rule just applies to Flexi type Eurail passes.

Be safe on night trains. Book something better than the lowest class, have a metal rope w/ lock to secure it to the rack above you to buy you time to react. If you have to use the racks near the doors, make sure you get up before and during all station stops and put your hand on the bag until the doors finally close. People can take your bags with them. Also, gypsies types can jump on and off at the last second and steal and you're unable to do a damn thing.
Every interrail pass owner I've met says its a rip off. You need to prebook tickets when you start since if you go up to the counters at the station you didn't make it XX amount of time in advance and get charged 40 Euro. If you don't fill the tickets out right you'll get heckled and possibly fined. If you plan your entire trip out in advance before you even go it seems alright but you can't just up and get on whatever train you like all willy-nilly like it sounds.
Good restaurants and beers to hit up while in Portland, Maine? More diamond in the rough spots, trying to steer clear of tourist spots.
>>1145680
Maine Beer Company in Freeport brews some of the best beer in the US, and their taproom is an awesome/chill place.
I've never been to Maine and have no idea about what it's like, but I work as a barman here in the UK and my favourite beer, Shipyard APA, comes from Portland, Maine. I have no idea whether it's actually popular there, but I'd be surprised if they didn't, given that it's sold worldwide. I think Shipyard makes a few other beers too, but I've only tried the APA.

I have a feeling this has been discussed here before, but how do you draw that line between taking photos or just being in the moment?
Like I obviously want to get some good photos to be able to relive my memories in the years to come, but at the same time I don't want to miss out on being present in that moment by always being behind the lens.
Pic is from Porkkalaniemi, Finland
I'm interested in this. I guess you should limit yourself to how many pictures you take of the same thing.
It's more important to be in the moment, so less is more (I think)
In order to photograph something you must first understand it. If you're taking a picture of a detail, see how it relates to the big picture, then isolate it in your mind. If you can, touch and feel it. Then take a picture. Continue observing until you feel you've experienced it. At least this is my way of doing things.
The downside is I'm sitting there for 5 minutes looking at wall inscriptions that the locals pass by and ignore, looking like an autist for caring about things nobody cares about.
>>1145542
Essentially this.
If it's something like a fountain I'll walk around it, same with buildings sometimes. I'll try to think of why they chose whatever piece they chose on that balcony or why that's the centerpiece, walking to get all the different views of it. Then when I'm ready and done admiring I'll use those points to think of a good angle, snap a picture or two real quick and be done. I know I was there, the picture doesn't need to be perfect to bring those memories back. The only people out are your IG followers and friends who might think you took a shit picture.
Why are flights during the Christmas week(s) so cheap compared to the rest of the year? I've noticed that a flight to Milan on the 26th of December is about 490 from JFK, to Paris, 520, and this trend extends regardless of destination, China was about 900 compared to about 1200 or so now, any reason?
(all prices in USD obviously).
>>1145516
Christmas is the one major holiday that most people stay home. So less personal and business travel. Lower demand, lower prices
>>1145537
I always thought there was a pretty even split between extended family getting together for Thanksgiving and staying home for Christmas and staying home for Thanksgiving and extended family getting together for Christmas
>>1145638
Thanksgiving is the most traveled holiday?

So I just found out I have two days to explore London next week. I plan on tackling Westminster, Trafalgar Square, Museum of London, and all that stuff in that area that you see on television as soon as I land on Monday, but I'm not sure about Tuesday.
Can someone give me cool stuff to see if you only had one day?
I'm not really looking for nightlife because I'm staying at an airbb which, from the reviews, looks like I won't have a key to and will have to coordinate entry times with the owner.
>>1145429
That's a terrible arrangement with abnb... What are you interested in?
I would recommend "the Wallace collection" a great collection of paintings, armour/ weapons through the ages. Not many tourists know about it
>>1145436
Thanks. Never heard of the wallace collection Ill look into it. I'm more interested in stuff like that. More historical and cultural landmarks and less drinking and social stuff due to the time constraints.
Are there any interesting medieval or Roman sites?
As for the airbb, I'm beginning to suspect it's his college dorm lol. It's in the middle of a campus. I don't mind because it's much cheaper than most of the other listings in the area and it's right next to the Stansted Express train I'll need to take early in the morning.
>>1145429
walk around the shops in the markets by Camden and find cool shit. Westminster Abby is cool. Walk into the supreme court too, its free and right next to the abbey. Walk along the river. See big Ben.
London is probably my favorite city ever :')

Lol, Ontario is in the inland empire, which is a meth consuming shithole. You're going to need to drive out to LA or orange County if you want to do something fun.

I'm willing to.
Shoot me some suggestions?
take metrolink to LA or Pasadena
seriously, the inland empire is a shithole, lots of meth, more than you could even imagine.

I often hear a lot of good and bad stuff about Paris.
What does /trv/ think about this city?
It's a good city if you ignore all the bad stuffs.
>>1142744
kek.
Simple but very honest truth.
Paris is a beautiful city, but it's so ugly.
unfortunately france is way too cucked, you have to beware being mugged by gypsy kids or blown by a muslim
other than that it's a neat (although crowded) place, but you won't have the same cultural mindblowing you would've had in the 1920's

Many people ask about whether or not the JR Rail Pass is worth it. It depends on your itinerary.

Plug your itinerary into Hyperdia to determine ticket costs, then compare to the below JR Pass options:
>7 day Pass: 29,110¥
>14 day Pass: 46,390¥
>21 day Pass: 59,350¥

Hey /trv/, I pretty much know my answer, but would like your input.
Spent most of my vacation days and the only time left for travel is a week around New Years (Dec 23rd - Jan 3rd). I wouldn't mind spending it in Japan, but I've been reading it's not a good time to go.
It won't be my first time visiting Japan and I've already been to the big touristy places (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka) and a bunch of smaller stops (Nagoya, Okinawa). Living in NYC, I would love to visit the Chuugoku region, specifically the San'in region just to see the very rural side of Japan.
I would like to spend most of it in Tottori and Shimane Prefecture, and maybe end it in Hiroshima for the New Years. I'm budgeting ~US$3300 including flight and board for the trip and my Japanese is around JLPT N3 level.
Should I spend more time thinking about it or save the money for a trip next year? Anybody actually a local here?
Reposting from the main board
In a few days I'm going to start studying Software Engineering, and because I got a good grade in my admission exam I got the chance to study abroad in ~2 years if I maintain a good overall score, and, knowing the inner weeb inside me and the actual chance to find what I'm looking for, I'm looking forward to choosing Japan.
The thing is that one requirement I need is I need at least N2 Japanese to officially apply.
Is it actually viable to go there to study for a semester? or should I try my luck applying to some other country? I've seen that the Tokyo University is a good option for Computer Science stuff but I want to hear opinions/experiences.
I really would want to study in Japan but I don't want to waste the opportunity either if it's not feasible, nor I want to waste time learning a language that probably could learn later.
What should I do? Should I pull the trigger? Has somebody else studied abroad in Japan?
Anyone know what the prostitution/escort scene is like in the Osaka/Kyoto/Nara region? Im trying to check Japanese chick off my bucket list while Im there and I dont have much faith in Tinder.
So after getting canceled on by 3 different friends i said fuck it, I'm going alone!
Got a flight to Malaga, Spain and have no idea what to do or where to stay.
Thinking about visiting Marbella, Sevilla and Morocco. I've been to Morocco before so i know my way around there but I've never been to Malaga or Marbella.
Any recommendations on where to stay, what to do? Money isnt an issue but id like to get most out of my money. Sightseeing is cool but im not there to visit museums, im there to relax.

Hey I'm moving to Russia (specifically Moscow) and I was wondering if anyone has any tips on living in Russia. also I was wondering if anyone knew anything about Russia's dual citizenship policy.
Feel free to ask any specific questions.
Why are you moving there?
>>1145923
I'm moving there cause I travel there a lot to visit some of my friends and I've decided just to move there because I travel there literally so much and I already got a job lined up.
