I am planning on moving to East Asia in 8-10 years, but I want to start planning now. In particular I've been looking at Hong Kong and Singapore as I like the way those places are run and don't particularly mind the weather(also interested in Japan, but I'll ask about that in the General).

How does one go about starting the process? Are there any /trv/-approved guides? I've looked through the ones I could find, but most don't go too in-depth. I'm also interested in how one gets naturalised and whether immigrants are allowed to work in the government.

I know about how expensive these cities are(especially property prices) and I'm willing to deal with it. I'm just wondering if there are any ways of moving there sooner and easier rather than later.

Any other tips/warnings are welcome of course.

Thanks.

Hi Op
I have lived in HK but on European company payroll.
As such I was just considered as a tourist and had to renew my permit every 90 days (a day trip across the border to Shenzhen was enough to get a new stamp).
This was enough to rent a serviced apartment, purchase a phone card and so on. But this wouldn't grant you anything that would be based on citizenship.
Most expats I knew where there on work visas, and that's probably the easiest way to gain citizenship: being hired by a local company that sponsors your visa.
Then you are more legit in regards to the HKGov.
Back then you could claim citizenship after 7 years spent on a real visa in HK. Dunno if this has changed, if I were you I'd get in touch with your local embassy.
Godspeed anon

Would you mind sharing what industry you're in? Also, were there any language requirements besides English? A lot of the online job postings seem to require Cantonese.

Hongkonger here. This is true. Most of the jobs that do not require Cantonese are "expat" jobs (eg. ESL teacher, vet, pilot, business manager/executive, professor, etc)
Where are you from?

Good city for a first timer in Europe? 23/M/Canada

Paris, Berlin and London are all pleb tourist destinations.

Prague, Budapest and Krakow are patrician tier.
>>
>>1145908
Don't listen to this guy, he's trolling. Prague, Budapest and Krakow are all beautiful places but they're completely full of plebs and you'll see lots of British people vomiting everywhere and being rude to local people and thinking they can sleep with everyone.

But, that said, according to what you said I would recommend Poland. It's cheap, there is good beer in the big cities, Poland (obviously) has a very interesting history and it's easy to get around. For a place which is slightly 'different' but simple to travel within for a first-timer, Poland is a good choice. I don't know what the art scene is like in Poland though, that's not really my thing.

Rome for beautiful huge ass churches and some cool roman stuff.

Austria for beautiful mountains and nature, try rafting when you are there.

Berlin for cool city and nightlife and a few monuments here and there.

Greece island for maximum enjoyment, party, AMAZING food, nice views, some places got great diving places (snorkel not deep diving)

QUESTION! Are you coming all the way from Canada just to visit 1 city/place?

I'll be in Panama City for Spring Break next year and my buddy and I will have access to more money than we know what to do with.

Need recommendations for places to turn up and things to do while there. If anyone can tell me of a couple good clubs that play American-style music that'd be great too. We both speak Spanish fluently, for what it's worth. Good places to pick up chicks would be much appreciated as well.

I don't really think there is much to do in Panama though, isn't it basically just Florida? Check out the canal, go back to your hotel and watch a movie.

Not OP, but Panama City is one of the top Spring Break destinations in the country. Think those old MTV Spring Breaks back when they ised to have VJs and stuff.

Hey, this is first time I post here. I am planning to travel to Iceland with a friend, although we've seen minor stuff about Iceland we still don't know how to move from a place to another place since we don't drive.
Are bycicles an option then?

Also we heared that it's expensive out there so how does one not spend fortune.

Is it better to camp rather than staying hostels?
Are there any other tips you can offer me about Island.

From place to place you mean between cities far from Reykjavík? If so, there are some buses and planes but I wouldn't trust on those, I'd recommend to rent a cheap car if you plan to visit other cities/waterfalls/ringroad shit or try to hitchhike which many people do. If you mean moving within the city it is pretty small so I think you can either walk or rent a bike.

It is pretty expensive especially in the summer, outside of high season the price drops quite a bit but it's still expensive compared to many places. If you want to save money I'd recommend to look for couchsurfing or share a room with your friend through airBNB, I shared an entire apartament with my girlfriend last summer there and it was still a lot cheaper than any hotel/hostels we looked into. If you're into camp and have your stuff, do it, but depending on when you're going it might be pretty cold plus harsh winds so look out.

On a general note, just go to Blue Lagoon if you really want to go there, unless I'd recommend trying some public pools or the beach in Reykjavík, if you move up north there's a spa like Blue Lagoon near Myvatn which is a lot cheaper and less crowded also. Also, if you're into alcohol and have a place to store it, buy as many as you can on the duty free, its expensive as fuck on the city and only sold by government stories which doesn't open at regular times.
>>
>>1145594
It is possible, though not cheap, to hire a driver/guide to take you around the country, if you seriously don't drive at all and want to keep to your own schedule.
>>
Has anyone rented any vehicles there?

If so, what did you find was the cheapest option for it?

every thing I look at currently makes it seem like its going to be like $1100 CAD for 6 days.

/Trv/, I've moved to a small town in Italy called Varese for a job. Does anyone know anything to do around here?

Its near Milan, so I can go there for the weekends, I suppose, but it feels far, especially without having a car. My last city was Chengdu, China and everything was easily accessible, I miss that.

Does anyone have any tips for living in Italy, specifically Varese, but also in general and maybe finding things to do?

Hello!

You're quite lucky because Varese is located in an ideal spot to see many beauties of northern Italy. First of all, you're surrounded by many lakes that are often chosen as tourist destinations, such as Lake of Varese, Lake Maggiore, Lake of Orta, Lake of Lugano, Lake of Como, Lake of Iseo and others.

I highly suggest you to take a trip to Lake of Orta, on the bank of which you will find Orta San Giulio, a small graceful village. From here you can reach San Giulio Island by boat, which is the one you can see in the right-hand corner of picture related.

Just 50 kilometers north from here there is Domodossola, a Renaissance and gothic town with a nice square. Near Domodossola, you can visit the Sanctuary of Re, Madonna del Sangue, which is that big castle-cathedral you can see in the top right corner of the picture. It's really worth the trip.

A beautiful site on the Lake Maggiore is Stresa and its Isola Bella (Beautiful Island), which houses English gardens and a lot of peacocks. Close to Stresa, you'll find Cannobio and the castles of Cannero. They emerge from the water and by the roadside there are many spots where you can take photos.

As regards cities, you don't need to visit Milan every weekend. Sure, it's one of the most outstanding cities of Italy, but there are many other options in this area. For example, Novara has a lovely and monumental centre (just look at the cupola of the Basilica of San Gaudenzio). The same goes for Como, Monza (see Villa Reale), Crema and Pavia (this one in particular is magnificent).

But most of all, I think Bergamo is actually superlative. Bergamo is that one on the top left-hand corner, with its typical mist and the mountain climate. If you're interested in art and culture, you can't miss the wonderful Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, Cappella Corleoni, Porta San Giacomo and Piazza Vecchia.
>>
>>1145243

If you like tiny old villages, you could plan a trip to Castiglione Olona (9 kilometers from you), Arcumeggia, Gromo, Pagazzano, Camerata Cornello and all the ones on the coast of Lake of Iseo. An absolute gem, included in UNESCO's cultural heritage list, is Crespi d'Adda, an incredible industrial village of the late 19th century, near Bergamo. It's a weird masterpiece of urban engineering, probably unique in the world.

Last but not least, you can visit the Sacri Monti (Holy Mounts), again in UNESCO's cultural heritage list. Surrounded by nature, they're of importance due to the many churches and sanctuaries they host. Here you can find the list with the nine Sacri Monti:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacri_Monti_of_Piedmont_and_Lombardy
The Sacro Monte of Oropa, along with its vast sanctuary, is the one you can see on the lower left of the picture.

I hope I was helpful!

Thanks! I've been a bit reluctant to really travel on my own because my Italian is pretty bad, but the places seem too nice to not go to. I'll try to drag a coworker to follow me so I have someone who can talk Italian to people for me.

Any tips on getting to them? Or just use the trains?

(Also, if you know of any good bars/clubs in Varese or Milan that would be great. This Friday, I have to be in Milan at night for a horrifyingly early morning flight anyway)

Any hidden jems in Laos/Cambodia?

Trying to see a few things out of the ordinary, hopefully not too far off the tourist trail.
>>
Will ask here again.

In a scale of 1-10, where 1 is airport level with the country's passport in hand and 10 is impossiburu, how hard is it for foreigners to cross by train (read: by land, not by plane) between Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam?
>>
>>1110416
10.

There are no train lines through Cambodia. The only line that goes to Laos goes a little past the border and then stops, so you won't really cross anywhere.

There's a thread dedicated to meeting qts from around the world on /int/. It's slow, and you don't need to take part in it, but you're welcome to. You'll find a link to the website and a pastebin answering most of the question you'll ask. It's a penpal website, but many people use it as an international dating website. It's buggy, but it's the best of its kind.
You can find the thread on /int/ by looking for "Culture Pals".

Tinder. Use FakeGPS and set your location to your landing area/where you plan to stay. Give it 5-10 minutes for the app to re-calibrate and your next matches should be UA qties.

After that just tell them you're coming soon and you'd like to meet. Done.

In most cities gyppos are confined to ghettos and they aren't as dangerous as you'd think. They deal with petty crime (low risk/low reward). They'd rarely try to swindle/rob you outright. Only if you're in their area and you look vulnerable.

Depends on how much time you have, Serbia is entirely skippable in terms of culture, architecture and anything actually to see. Macedonia is also safe to skip.

Other than that, in terms of recommendations:

Croatia first,
Montenegro is a hidden gem
Albania is nice
Bulgaria would be very interesting
Romania as well
Greece def worth a visit

The only thing in Serbia and Macedonia is degeneracy and retardation.

Pic: Lopushanski Monastery, Bulgaria.
There's "better ones" like Rila Monastery, but I haven't been there recently, so no photos by me.

the church and city-center are GOAT imo

just walk around the city, it feels really imperial. Go check out museum quarter.

The Schönbrunn Schloss is beautiful and Unesco heritage iirc, I recommend going on your most sunny day.

If you're staying for a long while, you can catch a bus in the morning to Bratislava, do the city & come back in the evening (or stay sleeping in the Blues Hostel, which is one of the best I've been too).

If you like geography and want to do something off-the-beaten track: there's a globe museum, with one of biggest globe collections in the world. Pretty cool desu. The girl at the entrance of the museum was extreme qt

I am from Hong Kong. I have Kiwi citizenship and am thinking about relocating there. However, I have never really lived there and have only traveled briefly around NZ when I was young. The longest I have been in one western country is a month. I really like the way of life there but I understand that traveling around a country for a month is different from living there for years. I cannot just quit my job and stay in NZ for a couple of months just to see whether I will like it or not. How to tell whether I will ever get past the cultural shock stage and adjust to life abroad without quitting my job?

>I cannot just quit my job and stay in NZ for a couple of months just to see whether I will like it or not.
Then it sounds like you don't have enough money in the bank to even consider relocating at this juncture in your life. When you are more secure financially to take some risk, say if you ended up unemployed for a year, and/or had to relocate a second time without income, then you could be ready.

In the meantime, you should immerse yourself in whatever you can find in the job climate for your ethnicity and career, and cost of living for the new city, Auckland, I assume. How reliant are you others socially, or willing to not be so social for a while until new friends? Are you happy alone without family?
>>
>>1146406
It's not that I have no money. It's more like quitting a job before finding another one seems a bit too risky.
I guess I can surirve until I make new friends. I have been been that far away from my family but I guess I will be fine.
So, no answers to my questions about cultural shock?
>>
>>1146412
>So, no answers to my questions about cultural shock?
It depends on you: your age (did you live in british HK?), your previous travel, social class and so forth. Most people like NZ, but will a non-anglo feel awesome? I honestly don't know with how it compares to say AU.

Moved to the UK and been living in Bristol for the last month.
I don't know exactly why, but I don't like Bristol at all. I don't like it's layout (look at the google maps of Bristol City Centre for example), the suburbs are depressing as fuck, the weather is shit, lots of old buildings and old houses everywhere, which I dislike, dreary and depressing atmosphere everywhere. In short, I'm just not feeling it. Is all of the UK the same? Is there a city with a more modern feel and where the weather is a at least a little bit better?
For reference I have lived in Canada before, specifically in Vancouver and absolutely loved it. Just for reference I arrived to Vancouver on winter, and then experienced summer. Winter in Vancouver feels less depressing to me that summer in Bristol. Am I crazy? Should I just leave and never come back? Before arriving to Bristol I had all these plans of going to London and Wales and Northern Ireland. Now I just imagine the same dreary depressing atmosphere everywhere in the UK and just want to leave.
