I'm going to Nice this week. Any suggestions on what to do/see and where to eat? Any advice in general? It seems to me that there really isn't that much to do in Nice, so I'm planning to go to Monaco, too.

The beaches are rocky so they are not that great. If you want to chill on the beach, go to Cannes. The other way is Monaco which has quite a few nice things to see. One really beautiful place you should check out is Eze Sur Mer, it's on the coastal road from Nice to Monaco.
>>

You're right, that looks beautiful. I'm definitely gonna stop by there.

Would it be worth it to go to Cannes for a day?
>>

Pebble beach, large city, terrorists. Visit the city, eat socca.

Cannes/Antibes is a nice day trip. Bit further than Monaco: Menton, French capital of lemon growing. Next to Menton: Roquebrune Cap-Martin, richest place on the coast, worth a visit, you can breathe money in the air. Apparently, near Nice, Saint-Jean Cap-Ferrat isn't poor either.

In the backcountry (i.e. not on the coast): Vence, medieval town on a hill, and most importantly Grasse, world capital of perfumes. I definitely recommend a visit to Grasse and its perfume factories (they're open to visits).

Going in December for a few days, any advice such as must-sees/must-avoids/what-to-do?

Personally very interested in sights, history and culture (medieval, Tudor and Victorian), plus anything a bit gruesome or macabre.

Also visiting Paris if you've got any additional insight.

Might be a good start

I've lived in London for 4 years, and London's a great place for historical stuff. The Tower of London is one of the most famous castles in the world, and the last execution was carried out as late as 1941 for a German POW.

Hampton Court was the home of the Tudor monarchs and is great for that kind of history, as is the London Museum. The British Museum is great for world history, although they have surprisingly little on British History.

Windsor Castle is very close to London and is the current place of residence for the Royal Family, and does tours with a lot of info on royals past and present. Windsor is also a very nice town to spend a day in if you're tired of the crowds of London.

For something more macabre, try the Imperial War Museum, I found their bit on WW1 to be very impressive and not shying away from the horrors of the world wars.

For a macabre but horribly-touristy-cheesy-experience-that-a-local-would-never-do experience, there's also the London Dungeon that tries to show off the more gruesome side of London's history. Something good for kids, I guess, but I would never go.

Allow one full day to visit the Tower of London. It's not a tower, it's a castle. Different buildings, instructive explanations. One of the buildings houses the crown jewels.

If you've never been to London before start with the basics: the financial district (the City of London, which is not a city but a district), the politics district (Westminster), and the commercial district (the West End).

Allow a few hours to visit the Parliament - worth a visit really even if you're not into politics.

Then walk through the two main parks: Hyde Park and Regents Park.

Museums: the British Museum (world famous antiquities), the National Gallery (fine arts), the Tate Modern (contemporary art), the Victoria and Albert Museum (dunno), the Natural History Museum.

Markets are great for eating, lots of street food, e.g. at Camdem Lock or Borough Market.
>>
>>1148026
Google chislehurst caves. It's half an hour outside central London right nxt to the station

Look up the ceremony of the keys at the tower of London. Try to get onto that tour it's pure magic

Camden is good for nightlife and there's good food and the markets. Lots of alternative folk too

Paris, do the catacombs theyre amazing. Be tacky and enjoy lovely Montmartre
Watch yourself on public transport. Avoid suburbs.

Go on both days, there's plenty to see. If not then just go on Sunday if the weather's good, there's often rain at some stage.

Oman is absolutely epic. The GF and I made it part of our round-the-world trip and it was easily our favorite country.
We rented a car and camped in random places because hotels aren't so cheap. The car was pretty affordable and gas was about $1 per gallon so it's a good way to go.
Public transport seemed pretty dismal. Hitchhiking is almost a standard mode of transport in the country for this reason. Everywhere you go you'll see people standing by the side of the road; we tried it a couple times.
Highlights:
Swimming in a cave in Wadi Shab
Wadi Bani Khalib, not the wadi but the nearby oasis
All the castles
Driving up random-ass wadis to camp and discovering old ruins
Everything about Musandam
The Qaboos mosque in Muscat

My wife and I are thinking of going to the Dolomites in the first half of September. We'll make sure we have a car there. We're mostly going there to enjoy nature. We want to go on walks (nothing too serious, just relatively short hikes, 10 km max) in the mountains, see beautiful lakes, take scenic drives etc. We're looking for hotels, chalets, glamping, that sort of thing. It would be nice if there's a nice town or something nearby to go for dinner or have a drink.

1. What would be a good place to base ourselves?

2. Are there any specific places we should visit? Preferably nature, but nice little (old) towns etc are welcome too.

´>1. What would be a good place to base ourselves?

Haven't been to the dolomites in the summer but check out Cortina d'Ampezzo or the surrounding area. It's pretty much in the center of the dolomites and you can drive to all directions from there. In the wintertime its a popular ski resort so I'd assume that there's lots of accomodation options.

If you're looking for more isolated and closer to nature kind of place, check out some smaller nearby villages. I suggest using google earth for spotting some lakeside villages. I always use it when I'm booking my ski trips.
>>
best advice would be to stay in different valleys.
first half of sept is perfect. still good weather but its not crowded like in august. less ppl everywhere especially on the streets. italian tourists drive slow as fck. best places to stay:
wolkenstein and welschnofen. personally i dont like cortina d'ampezzo as a place to stay.

u really want to visit latemar, rosengarten, langkofel, sella, dreizinnen (all those are mountains) and karersee (nice lake right next to the street in front of the latemar). dreizinnen being the most famous.

if u are not into hiking that much: rosengarten: use the cable car. dreizinnen: there is a parking lot pretty close - use it. if u stay in wolkenstein: cable car on the mountain "seceda" - just an amazing view on sella, langkofel, plattkofel, seiser alm etc

/travelling Australia general/

What up /trv/,

Newfag to this board, but recently I've been thinking of travelling, since I'm 18 and haven't travelled since I was a kid. I was trying to think of places I could go cheaply, then realised I've barely travelled in my own country, Australia.

Can anybody suggest some cool places to going in Australia? I'm still planning, but I think I'm gonna do a (relatively) low cost, backpacking style trip for a week, and try to stay in hostels.

I live in Victoria, and don't drive. Help me brainstorm, /trv/.

Consider Noosa.
>Beautiful beach, headland, river
>Sizable backpacker scene
>Not ruined by excessive tourism development as Gold Coast and many other places on the sunshine coast (still busy af around Christmas tho)
>Could be reached cheaply via budget flight to Bris then 2hr bus trip.

You could also spend a little bit of time visting other places in the SE QLD/nth NSW area if you wished. You could add a visit to Byron bay into the trip as well, there is a fair bit of tourism infrastructure aimed at backpackers in the region. If you do go I think the best time is in Feb, March or November outside school holidays when the weather/water is warm but the place isn't overcrowded with families.

I've heard Noosa mentioned before, but I never looked into it. A bus ride doesn't bother me, so I think your budget option sounds great. As for a sizeable backpacker scene, that sounds awesome. A main aim of me travelling is to experience my country, but also to try and meet more people, so other backpackers is a massive plus.

Byron Bay is another place I've always wanted to go, since it seems pretty tourist oriented.

Luckily, Feburary is when I'll have the biggest gap between school trimesters, so I think it'd be perfect for me to go then.

Thanks for the help, anon! I'm gonna put those two on my list for places to consider.

I'm going to Paris for a week with my family. Can you suggest places to go to (preferably not soooo well known like the Eiffel Tower and shit like that)?

The whole city is a tourist trap. Because you come from a middle class family that can only travel in the summer, you're getting the worst of it. The areas that aren't tourist traps are Muslim ghettos.

As someone that lived there for a few months last summer, here are my recokmendations:

Don't bother trying to go to the Orsay, Louvre, Eiffel Tower, etc.

Go to the Cluny museum, the Delacroix museum, the Jacquemart Andre museum... just look up small museums.

I intended this post to be longer but I'm getting a headache just thinking about the absurd exhibitionism of Paris and the crowded zoo of people it is.
>>
Arene de Lutece (a nice old Roman amphitheatre in the Quartier Latin)

boat ride on the Seine (starts off at Eiffel Tower)

drinking red wine on the stairs below Sacré Coeur (magical view at night)

the Catacombs (FYI: you'll have to wait in line at least two hours even if you arrive at the time of opening, the queue was always fucking long both times I've been there)

climbing the stairs to the top of the Notre Dame's northern tower is free if you're under 26 and are an EU citizen

parc des buttes-chaumont (a romantic park, featuring an artificial lake, an artificial cliff and a fake-temple)

and Pere Lachaise cemetery (one of the few really calm places in Paris)

Hey /trv/,

So some background first, I'm traveling to Colombia for a week, and will be in the cities of Bogota and Cartagena with my girlfriend. I speak and understand a fair amount of Spanish, and will be there to explore the cities and do typical tourist stuff. So here comes the potential issue; I'm Black, and so is my gf.

From what I've read this might be a problem, and was wondering if I should be too concerned about enjoying our time there. Also, does /trv/ have any tips when it comes to traveling to Bogota and Cartagena?

>>
>>1145277

Haha, are you kidding? You'll fit right in, especially in Cartagena. There are plenty of black people all across the country, but they're more concentrated along the coast. I suppose racism could be an issue but whatever. Just don't fuck with anybody or cause trouble and I'm sure you'll be left alone. Latin American countries, especially those closer to the Caribbean, are quite diverse. Lots of blacks, whites, Mestizos, whatever.
>>
What? That's no problem at all, Cartagena is at least half black and Bogota has so many skin tones you find it really hard to care about that. There is some racism but overall people here like sucking foreigner dick and you will probably have people be friendly to you.

Some tips: Don't be a first world sissy: Traffic is shit, streets are dirty and people are loud, get used to it.
>>
>>1145277

Don't waste too much time in Cartagena. Its historic city centre is nice, but it is one of the touristiests cities. Not much to do and overpriced.
What are you gonna do in Bogota? Why don't you go to Medellin?

> everything is dirty and smelly
> ugly, self-unaware women
> even the shittiest bars are overcrowded

> any place with reasonably priced food doesn't take credit card
> "totally authentic" ethnic food is served in small portions and inflated in price by 800%
> no alleyways, so garbage has to be piled on the sidewalks

How the fuck did Manhattan get this mythical "greatest city on earth" reputation? Some areas of Brooklyn are genuinely charming (Cobble Hill, Park Slope), but Manhattan (including the "luxurious" Upper East Side) is a fucking dump. Between various work trips and family/friend visits, I've collectively spent over 5 months there. I've hit up every "secret gem" that locals have assured me would make me feel The Real Magic of Manhattan, and absolutely nothing has. Everything that the locals have assured me is "truly a New York original" (whether it be a jazz club, cocktail bar, dive bar, ethnic food, steak house, rooftop party, or "pop up" bakery/bar/juicing station) is simply a shittier, more expensive version of something that exists in every major city on the planet.

What am I missing, /trv/? Is there some "thing" about Manhattan that's amazingly self-evident that I just don't get, or is New York the ultimate "Emperor's New Clothes" city?

The most fun I had in New York was getting to drive like a madman with all the taxis in a car that had been hit by a deer on the way but the ex didn't wanna turn around. That and I've seen some good underground music there but in terms of it having its own vibe.... Eh, it was mediocre.

French here.
The "magic" for me was to finally see with my own eyes those streets, buildings, monuments and clichés that I grew up seeing on TV and silverscreen.
Lot of French people laugh at tourists getting gouged for pseudo French experience in Paris. A picnic of wine and cheese at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. A romantic candlelit dinner by the Seine. An overpriced café au lait on the Champs Elysées, looking at the Arc de Triomphe.
But I don't laugh at them, as I'm 100% aware that I did the exact NYC equivalent. I had a hot dog from a cart and a slice from a pizza parlor. I had a Reuben at Carnegie's even tho I had better deli food in HK. I sat down in Central Park, photographed yellow cabs and stared at Grand Central's ceiling.
I guess NYC is a bit like Disneyland, it's only as magical as you'll allow it to be.

I literally just came back from a trip with two very long layovers in Schipol Airport.

It's extremely easy to get from the airport to the city center on a very nice and relaxing train ride.

Here's a tip: DON'T PAY FOR THE TRAIN. Literally nobody checks those tickets so it's a total waste of money.
I paid for mine and I regretted it, especially since I ended up hating Amsterdam.

Anyways, seven hours is not too long of a layover, so I would recommend either walking around and going on a canal cruise, or finding just one museum of interest from Tripadvisor and going to it...though you may find yourself rushing through it.

The only Dutch foods worth noting are stroopwafels and pickled herring, so yeah, there's not much going on there. Just go to an Albert Heijn food store and get some candies or something like that.

I wanted to add that the train station is inside the airport and goes to Amsterdam Centraal station.
