Hey anon,
I visit Guadalajara almost every year. Admittedly, I don't really get around there too much because I go to another town like an hour away.

When it comes to the night life though try visiting Chapultepec. The area has a bunch of bars and it is very safe.

For a place to eat, I would recommend visiting Cenaduria Guille for traditional Jalisco food like pozole, sopes, flautas, etc.. I believe there's two locations. But the location that I've been to literally started out inside a house that has now been expanded upon. Tortas ahogadas are also great and of course you can't miss the tacos.

When it comes to touristic places, I would recommend the Historic Downtown area and Tlaquepaque. Both of those places are a pretty cool to just walk around and check out the sights.

If you're into soccer, I've heard the games are pretty cool at Estadio Jalisco and I know there is a bullfighting plaza but I've never been to any of those places.

I don't know how long you're going to spend over there but if you have a few days to spare, it would certainly be worth it to take some time to visit Puerto Vallarta, Guanajuato, the Guachimontones pyramids, or Tequila. Each of these places has much to offer but that's a different story.

Michoacan is also a nice area to visit if you have some days to spare but it's pretty dangerous over there right now.

Beyond this, I'm not too good at offering any more specifics. Sorry.
I hope what I know is useful. I check into /trv/ periodically so let me know if you would like to know any specifics.

if you like underground house and dub techno, Bar Americas is fire as fuck!

I'm travelling to the US for the first time this December.

I start from HEL in Finland, going trough ARL in Sweden and then I have a connecting flight in LAX.

I will be arriving at TomBradleyinternational terminal and my connecting flights are domestic, departing from "Terminal 5".

Now I have a few questions, what checkpoints do I have to go trough when arriving in LAX? do I Have to get my bag?
go trough immigration?
customs?
and then change terminal and go trough it all, and check in my bag again?
What will they ask for in immigration/customs? will they check my luggage?

Also,

I have googled a bit about what I will need to do before traveling to the US, I have applied for the ESTA- program and I got my new "chipped"-passport. I will also of course bring my tickets in paper and digital form. Is there anything I'm missing?

As you probably can see I'm not a frequent flyer and I haven't traveled on my own before.

>Now I have a few questions, what checkpoints do I have to go trough when arriving in LAX? do I Have to get my bag?
Yep. Since LAX international is your first point of entry into the US, you'll be going through immigration/passport control and customs there.
>go trough immigration?
This happens first. There will probably be a specific line for ESTA people; look for it and get in it.
>customs?
This is typically second--you'll go to a baggage claim area, hand in a form, and walk your bags past a customs person.
>and then change terminal and go trough it all, and check in my bag again?
This depends. If your flights (both the flight to LAX and your connection) are on the same ticket (either all on the same airline or on a codeshare), you will probably be able to re-check your bags directly from the place you picked them up for customs, or somewhere nearby, so it'll be before you change terminals. Look for your airline's logo near a conveyor belt.

If it's on a different airline, on a flight for which you are not already checked in (holding boarding pass, etc.), you will have to go to the check in counter in your new terminal, check your bags in again there, and go through security again to board your new flight. But in most cases you should be able to stay airside the whole time.
>What will they ask for in immigration/customs? will they check my luggage?
Immigration will ask where you're from, where you're going, the purpose of your trip, and when you're leaving. Customs will ask you if you have anything to declare (large amounts of cash, anything you might theoretically be in the US to sell), and whether you're here on business. Most people have nothing to declare, hand in their forms, and get waved through without a search. Some people do get searched more or less at random, or if the agents are suspicious of you for some reason, but it's quite rare. You may be required to pass your bags through an x-ray machine.
>>
>>1168597
Oh, and customs will also ask if you've been on a farm, and if you have any food, soil, or agricultural products (seeds, etc.). These are actually not customs questions but California Department of Agriculture questions, looking to keep out pests and invasive species.

They don't care about processed food, so you don't need to declare a chocolate bar or a bag of peanuts or crisps or something. They care about things like potted plants, clippings, shoots, etc.--they are looking out for things that could spread plant (and theoretically human) disease. Meat is also questionable--I once came back from China with a moon cake that, to my ignorance, contained ham, and they grabbed it and tossed it.

But in general, you won't have anything they're looking for, so just check 'no' in all the relevant boxes and move along.

So I've got a 10 hour layover in Shanghai.
Is it worth the hassle of getting out/in the airport to check out the city?
I've got like 50€ left from my eurotrip.
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Sure. Shanghai airport is boring. However, after arriving just go straight to immigration and just get your 3 day stamp. If you get stuck at the counters right next to immigration/customs, they will stamp your ticket, escort you upstairs, and you'll be stuck in the departing terminal for 10 hours. Not even sure if they finally opened the Starbucks.
>>
>>1168469
Hahaha alright, fuck it. I'll just save that 50 and catch up on some sleep and books
>>
>>1168464
You're gonna want to make sure you can even leave the airport. I know when I went I had to get a tourist visa. This dude >>1168469 might know more but I'd double check it.

Shanghai is cool. Def go instead of sitting in the airport. As far as Chinese cities go its by far the cleanest and was my favorite. I'd check out some of the tea gardens or botanical gardens that are nearby.

Help. It's my birthday today and until yesterday I always had some travel companions. Now there are only some ignorant Israelis in my hotel, who don't seem to be interested in anything but theirselves.

What do you do on your birthdays, when away from home? Today I have exactly nothing to do, besides answering half-hearted whatsapp messenges.

I celebrated my 21st on a field exercise while innamilitary. All I got was a 30 second pause, a water canteen toast, and a whispered "hip hip hooray" from my sarge and squad mates. Then we continued onwards toward our objective in freezing cold after zero sleep and 40 miles of hiking.

That remains one of my most memorable birthdays to this day. So make the best out of what you got and be happy that you're alive to see another revolution around the sun.

I live in Berlin, Germany (in case that helps with comparing prices).

I wanted to see Switzerland for a while now and just stumbled over the Grand Train Tour-Tickets their national Train service offers.

So I'm wondering how expensive rooms, food etc. are in the country?

Picture is somewhat related too

it's definitely one level more expensive than germany in terms of everything, especially trains, my advice is rent a car and drive around, that way you actually see more and save money
>>
>>1168152
I do not have a drivers license - and I do enjoy traveling by train quite a bit.

Are the regions different in price? Any places I should avoid or rush through?

thanks for input
>>

Well here you go.
Room
>80-100€, hostels might be available for 25-50€/night
Food:
>kebab or other stuff about 10€ without a drink
>sit down lunch: daily menu with a drink: 20€
>sit down dinner starter, main dish and a drink you won't leave under 40€
>make your own meal/sandwich: 5€
Drinks/going out:
>expect to pay 6-12€ for a 5dl beer and 10-21€ for a Whisky Cola
Clubs:
>entry fee is usually between 10 and 100€ with no drinks included
Prostitutes:
>for anything that has not any STD you could imagine 150€+

Yes there's a huge price difference, the top are the most urban areas but expect the same prices in touristic areas like Interlaken, Zermatt, Davos, St. Moritz or Lugano.
Generally prices are from most expensive to cheapest

I recently returned from a month long europe trip where I spent almost all my money. Now I'm back in Finland and I've been working for a few weeks and looking forward to leave again for a couple weeks to a place with good nightlife and nice people.

I only have about 600 euros to spend so I thought of going to Kiev and maybe Odessa, however I'm worried about the language barrier.

a few questions:
>How well is english generally spoken there?
>What's the nightlife like? Will I find good parties during the week or only weekends?
>How many days should I look forward to spend in Kiev and Odessa?
>Is there anything going on in Odessa in autumn? I've got a feeling that it's more like a summer destination.
>Any other cities worth visiting?
>Is it safe? I'd be travelling solo, 19/m

Also any general advice about Ukraine that pops into your head is greatly appreciated.

>How well is english generally spoken there?
Very rare to find someone who speaks decent English. Not even young people speak English. No chance with anyone over the age of 30 unless they work daily with foreigners.

>What's the nightlife like? Will I find good parties during the week or only weekends?
I happened to meet an English speaking tour guide from Tinder and we went bar hopping during a weekday in Lviv. It was pretty empty.

>How many days should I look forward to spend in Kiev and Odessa?
Depends what you want to do. Kiev is quite big but not very touristy. I'd say 3 days and you'll manage everything. Chernobyl/Pripyat is a day trip but you won't find any tours under 100€. Odessa has a decent inner city and beaches on the black sea. It isn't very commie blocky and still has old buildings. I'd also say 3 days and you'll see everything.

>Is there anything going on in Odessa in autumn? I've got a feeling that it's more like a summer destination.
It is more of a summer destination imo. I went in May to see the beaches. Unfortunately I didn't stay long enough to enjoy the city itself.

>Any other cities worth visiting?
Yes. Lviv is definitely worth visiting.

>Is it safe? I'd be travelling solo, 19/m
I encountered 0 zeros the entire time. People were more surprised to see a western tourist in Ukraine than anything else. The war in the east really ruined their economy. I solo traveled Ukraine for 2 weeks and I am 20/m.

>I only have about 600 euros to spend so I thought of going to Kiev and maybe Odessa
I spent two weeks in Lviv, Kiev, and Odessa eating out every day, taking trains between the cities, using Airbnb, bars, etc and only spent about 400€ on the entire trip and I wasn't even trying to budget. Everything is extremely cheap especially if you're coming from the west.

>Also any general advice about Ukraine that pops into your head is greatly appreciated.
If you're tall, western looking/dressed, uptight and clean you will definitely stick out. I had a friend in Kiev that I went to visit and whenever I spoke English to him everyone would look at us and stare. If you look nordic/germanic and are handsome be prepared for stares from women.

Tinder isn't really popular but I did to try to meet some natives using it. All I did was say something like, "From [western country], in [UA city] for a while" and I literally matched with every girl I swiped right on.

Alcoholics, drunks, and bydlo are a serious problem though. If some underclass looking drunk tries coming up to you don't take shit from him and either walk away or assert your dominance if he gets pushy.

Don't drink the water, ever.

Government services aren't reliable. Nothing is automated. Everything is old school. That means there are no ticket machines, no automatic stamps, nothing of the sort. I rode a tram and I had to physically give money to the train driver and he gave me a ticket. I think had to walk to the back of the crowded tram and stamp the ticket in a clamp. If you're in a tram and someone passes you money, pass the money onto the next person so it reaches the driver and then once the ticket comes back pass it along to the person who handed you the money. Same goes for buses.

All public transport vehicles are 40+ years. Nothing is new.

Squat toilets are a thing in Ukraine. It was a shock when I first saw it. No doors or seats lol

Buses look like pic related btw. To buy a ticket, you have to tap the bus driver on the shoulder, give him money, he thens puts the money on a carpet rug placed on the center console, gives you a paper ticket, and then you have to walk back and stamp the ticket on a clamp that hangs from the walls of the bus.

Same for trams and street cars. Long distance trains however are more reliable. You purchase a ticket at a station like everywhere else. Do remember to bring your passport when purchasing a ticket or else you will be refuses. I suggest taking the express trains between Kiev and Odessa. They are 5 hours long and brand new compared to the old school sleeper trains that take 10+ hours, have no AC, no dining car, and are 60 years old. If you do take a 10 hour train ride without a dining car you will stop half way in some random town where babushkas gather and try to sell you local fish, meats, and baked good. Buy some because you won't be able to eat anything for 10 hours if you didn't bring your own food. I made the mistake of thinking that there was a dining car which turned out to not be true.

Food sharing is extremely common onboard long distance trains. Many people bring tea bags and ask the train car attendant for hot water. People share sausages and sweets with each other. Card games are also common. I can't speak a word of Russian or Ukrainian but people still shared food with me to build relations each other.

Also, don't ever lose sight of your belongings while riding the train. Suitcases are fine to leave behind if they are locked up but either bring your backpack with you to the bathroom or (if you speak Russian) ask an older couple to watch them for you.

I'm moving on from Colombia to Peru in a few days and looking for any and all advice from folks that have been.

From what I've heard it sounds like it's a bit over-touristed, but I'd love to hear recommendations on genuinely cool stuff to do, good hostels, advice on fucking the locals, etc.

So, Peru General Thread.

>From what I've heard it sounds like it's a bit over-touristed
Only Cusco, Nazca and Arequipa.
But no matter how tourist allergic you are, you must not miss Cusco. I didn't go to Machu Picchu though, because I also have this allergy somewhat. There is a ton to see in and around Cusco to keep you busy for 10 days. Some attractions receive many tourists, others fewer.
Nazca and Arequipa also have their reasons to merit a visit though. And it's not nearly as badly swarmed by tourists and touts as other places in the world. You'll be fine.
You might think the Colca Canyon would be a good reason to go to Arequipa. The city itself is very beautiful, but I found the canyon near Chachapoyas, a city in the north of Peru, more impressive, not to mention much cheaper. They charge westerners 70 Soles for the Colca Canyon (21,30 usd, 19,35 euro), the one near Chachapoyas is like only one euro.
Chachapoya itself is also a fantastic destination. There are many archaeological sites to check out, though some are remote and require you go with a tour. Others may be inaccessible due to rain. Don't let these two concerns stop you from going there though.
Another place you should definitely check out would be the Ballesta Islands.

>good hostels
>going to hostels in Peru
There are cheap hotels on every street corner, no matter how lost you are. I don't understand why Peruvians need so many hotels. And they're all cheap as fuck too. I'm talking 10 euros for a clean private room with a private bathroom and wifi. If 10 euros is too much and you're trying to save money just go to the next one.

>advice on fucking the locals
Miraflores in Lima and Cusco.
I never actually went out in Cusco or Lima, so I can't talk from personal experience about these two places.
However, I did lose my virginity to a hotel receptionist in some random city. She immediately fell in love with me because I'm a gently and kind beta, instead of being a misogynist macho like every single Peruvian man.
>>
>>1167949
Sounds like Vietnam with the hotels. That's perfect, I prefer getting hotels and getting to know local girls instead of backpackers. Seems like the backpackers are generally very young in Peru anyways.

So is Peru the kind of country where you never really need advance reservations?

This is month 11 so I'm definitely tourism-allergic, and I want to improve my Spanish so I'd love to explore some random cities that see zero tourists.
>>
If you are looking for less touristy places, I can recommend Choquequirao. It is like Machu Picchu but with less tourists and a bit smaller. You need to hike 1,5 days there. For more information have a look at wikitravel: http://wikitravel.org/en/Choquequirao
