So I'm going to thailand in june for a family reunion, but I'm tossing up whether to do the vietnam ride beforehand.
Pros:
>cheap to add on to thai trip
>sense of acheivement from solo quest
>easy to ride at my own pace
Cons:
>who will help me if I die
>will I get lonely
>is the trip itself actually good?

I would appreciate some external opinions because I can't bloody decide.

Yeah the trip is good. Lots of interesting things to see, diverse scenery, and the people are generally very friendly outside major tourist spots. Lots of potential for online self-aggrandizement (just make sure you get the bike in absolutely every shot). You could potentially get a bit lonely but there are a lot of other foreigners riding all over the country so it would be easy to pick up a buddy for a while.

The roads are dangerous and the drivers bad, but a lot of accidents happen to foreigners who overestimate their riding abilities and don't drive to conditions. If you drive to your level of experience you should be alright. In practice that means avoiding high-traffic areas, not driving too fast, using extra caution in adverse conditions (e.g. rain, fog, night) and allowing yourself plenty of time so you aren't forced to drive through fatigue or dangerous conditions to meet your timings.

I think riding a moped scooter for hours on end would get pretty uncomfortable and you might have problems riding on highways, but you probably want to avoid them anyway. That said the alternative used by most backpackers is a shitty Honda Win copy which isn't much better.

If you're still unsure you could always test the waters by renting for a few days or doing a short trip contained to a certain part of the country.
>>
watch the top gear vietnam special where they ride through vietnam on old bikes. pretty cool episode.
>>
If you do the trip beforehand you'll probably have plenty of interesting stories to tell your family when you get there.

Me and my friends are thinking about going to Amsterdam this summer.

Would you recomend going to a hotel or trying Airbnb? Hoping not to spend too much money.

It's a weeks trip, so if any of you have experience with visiting Amsterdam please share some tips/advice and where are some fun places to go.

Last time I went to Amsterdam I stayed at St Christopher's at The Winston. Great hostel, very well located. Best coffeeshops to visit: Amnesia, Bulldogs at the Red Light District and Original Dampkring. Best places to go: Heineken Experience, Vondelpark, museums

I'm off to Athens in September with a few friends and i cant find anything to do in Athens other than the Acropolis and a couple of the famous buildings. Been searching for a while now so thought i would see if anyone with firsthand experience in Athens is able to help me out with tips/things to do/see.

Other attractions in Athens include some lovely hospitals (for when the smog gives you emphysema), scenic mountains of trash, fun mystery tours (any cab will do) and colorful local traditions, such as rioting. There's also some overcrowded ruins you've probably heard of. They're the bits on the hill - the rest of it just looks that way through neglect.

Hey /trv/, I'm going to be in Philadelphia for about a month soon and I'm looking for the best places to visit. Give me some places that aren't too touristy because I can look those up anywhere. I'm trying to find some good places to eat, dance, or explore.
Bonus points if they are aesthetically beautiful, cool, or interesting. Pic unrelated
Thanks

Well, if you're into running Forbidden drive by the wissahickon is a great place to go. along the trail you'll find old colonial-style structures and houses, people riding horses along the trail, old structures and bridges. its really fascinating and feels like you went back in time. every time I run through I find something new, just keep track of where you go and don't get stuck out there late.

old city has a lot of good food and aesthetically pleasing buildings. elfreth's alley is nice to see also, and there might still be a friendly couple that cooks cookies/treats for you to try out or purchase. Me and my girl found signs pointing towards them randomly but it was one of the best secrets I've found yet in Philly.

If you're more adventurous Graffiti pier can be accessed not far from fishtown, there might be a cop or two nearby warding off people from going in but me and my friend finessed our way through cause we wanted to take band pictures. lots of badass murals and graffiti there, but does give off some creepy vibes at night.

Everything else philly has to offer like the art museum, chessesteaks, city hall, events just go to visitphilly website. also, dont go too far into north broad.

Hi /trv/

Going to Israel for 10 days. I'd love to hear some of the best experiences from those of you who have been there.

Also there are some sexy af Jewish girls so if anyone has hooked up in Israel I'd love to hear! Lastly, any hostel recommendations in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, etc? Is Petra in Jordan worth camping at overnight?

Thanks so much for your help. Cheers!

If you're around Jerusalem, be sure to do 2-3 days or at least a daytrip to West Bank. It's easy, you can just take a bus. Visit Ramallah and Bethlehem.

Thanks m8, definitely was planning on Bethlehem. What does Ramallah have to offer?

I'm curious on what you think the main thing to "do" is in the West Bank...historic sights?

I need advise. I've been in an off and on relationship with a girl for the past 3 years and have been slowly starting to resent her. I have been wanting to travel solo for a long time, since I came back from 5 months abroad in Japan 6 years ago. Since then i moved around in the states, first in Detroit, then Chicago, and now in New York City the past 4 years. I really truly care about her, but our relationship has gotten very toxic and codependent and I can just feel my self using our relationship as an excuse to put off achieving my immense urge to travel alone. I don't know how to tell her this, and maybe this is better suited for an advise thread but wasn't getting anywhere there so thought I'd try here. She has threatened to kill herself if I left her during our last fight (on my birthday no less) and although I don't think she would really do it, I know me breaking up with her is going to completely destroy her. She is a very beautiful and talented person with some psychological issues (BPD and Bi-polar 2).

Im just feeling like I need to get out of this and I know once I am I am going to have absolutely no strings attaching me here anymore, and I want to really make a go of traveling around and seeing the world. Not really sure what I'm even asking for on here anymore just needed to get this off my chest and maybe hear some anonymous feedback. I am so scared of hurting her, but i feel my emotions have shut off almost completely to her after our last fight when she kicked holes in her walls and was running for knives and I had to physically restrain her.

i dont know what the point of making this thread is, but feels good to put it out there i guess.

Don't know what to tell you, OP. She sounds like a psycho to me.
Can't you travel with her instead of alone? That seems to be the solution.
>>
>>1233082
I don't want to go with her, i want to go alone. I guess I'm just at a loss for how to approach this situation. I don't know how to talk to her about this without her loosing it.
>>
>>1233084
Then go somewhere alone for a week or so (not too long). See how she takes it.

Do you need a passport to travel to another state in the US?

I'm going to be moving to Maine, taking a plane would be easiest.

Oh honey. No but you will probably need a drivers license or some form of ID at the airport.
>>
I've never seen trolling on /trv/ so I'm going to assume this is serious.

No you don't need a passport to travel between states. You will need a form of ID.

Here is the list of ID's accepted.
Adult passengers 18 and over must show valid identification at the airport checkpoint in order to travel.
•Driver's licenses or other state photo identity cards issued by Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent)
•U.S. passport
•U.S. passport card
•DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
•U.S. military ID (active duty or retired military and their dependents, and DoD civilians)
•Permanent resident card
•Border crossing card
•DHS-designated enhanced driver's license
•Airline or airport-issued ID (if issued under a TSA-approved security plan)
•Federally recognized, tribal-issued photo ID
•HSPD-12 PIV card
•Foreign government-issued passport
•Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card
•Transportation worker identification credential
•U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
•U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential

Have a great adventure!

My girlfriend and her room mate are going to northern Morocco for spring break.

She insists its fine and there is nothing to worry about.

Realistically though, how dangerous is Northern Morocco for two white American girls in their 20's?

Though they refuse to wear a hijab or anything like that, they're not gonna do anything dumb like buy hashish or drink alcohol in public.

Should I be worried?

Munich. I like everything, no big dislikes. I have from now until April 25 when uni starts again. My budget is €200 for the plane and 500€ for the week.

The problem is the Easter weekend, I think that kills most big Western capitals for me. I see good availability in Eastern Europe though. I'd like to go to Russia but visa are fucking expensive if I want them within 7 working days.

I could go to Moscow from 17/04 until 24/04 for 140€ which is relatively cheap. Visa costs seem fucking steep though.

I think it's cus you feel like you have a purpose while you're there and a reason for being there, but you don't have to really do anything (besides checking in and security and whatnot). Everyone is supposed to be there and in transit and too busy to judge you. You know you're leaving whatever it is behind you and going onto new things. Whatever is on your mind cannot weigh you down because you're leaving. And >>1232205

To make plane ride more comfy, bring a good book, phone or iPod with music. Drink a little bit. Don't worry about anything and just chill. Also get a window seat so you don't have to get up for anyone.

Pittsburgh is awesome. Tons of great greasy (and non-greasy) food. Walkable. Has the two rivers. Different neat neighborhoods. Definitely one of my favorite US cities.
>>
>>1231157
Not sure what you're into but I'll fire off a few things.
-Several great history and art museums, plus the Science Center.
-The Strip District has a variety of food markets with some great stuff. Plenty of great restaurants all over town for traditional German, Polish, Asian food. Polish and German especially have a huge history here. For great German go to Maxwell's or Penn Brewery. Great sushi is Fuji on Route 60 outside of town. There's a killer Indian place in Moon near Robert Morris U.
-Most any subculture/niche activity has strong community here. Game stores galore, an Escape-the-Room, paintball, rugby, three huge nerd conventions (one being quarterly), trampoline parks, climbing walls, Painting with a Twist, specialized music/media stores, live performance theaters for major plays, small theaters for open mics and concerts, music stores (instruments), huge metalhead scene. You name it we got it, if not right in the city then <10 minutes drive.
-The South Side (Carson St) has about 100 bars, nightclubs, restaurants. All crammed along about one mile of one street. Not an exaggeration.
-Decent parks.
-Not generally a dangerous city. Just avoid Homewood, Knoxville, Hill District, and parts of the North Side.
-Affordable living without settling for a shithole.

So I'm planning a one week trip to Cuba. I'm a single male, living in Atlanta, Georgia.

Any recommendations for places to stay? Things to do? Travel tips for Cuba?

Usually when I travel alone I'll stay in a youth hostel, and try to do 1 or 2 little adventures, but nothing too crazy.

thanks guys.

Update:

Looked at tours, and while they can make the trip easier, they seem pretty expensive.

I'm gonna do 5 days 4 nights. Think I'm just gonna book the plane ticket online, and try to find a "casa particular" on AirBnB.

Good so far?
>>
>>1227357
You need a tour. Exchange. Are you cuban? If you aren't visiting your family, you need the tour. There's a reason it's expensive...it contains kickback tax to the government you're still supporting. Airfare has always been cheap.
>>
>>1227408

Nope just white American. Born here.

So I've been reading some of the blog articles about it. They said travel is looser than it has ever been. They said when I get to Havana I need to go to the Visa line, pay $50 and check one of 12 boxes for reason of visit.

They said "cultural interest" is just fine.

The vibe I'm getting online is you don't need the tour.

All the tours start at $2k and I can't pay that shit.

Right now I'm looking at $500 for the plane ticket. $35/day for an AirBnB room, $350 for random misc stuff.

I'm trying to stay right at $1,000

Is there any guide to New York City for visitors such as this one to Moscow? >>1216175

Wanna visit NY at new year holidays, so I realize I don't know so much about the city besides some general issues. Is it a good idea to stay at local's found by cuchsurfing? Sould I stay at suburbs and move across the city by metro (and is it safe to use it, especially in late eveninig) or it would be better to stay next door to Manhattan and use taxi? Is it difficult to move from Jersey to NY and back? What is the best way to go from each of NY airport to the city? Where can I buy or check out USA-made wine?

The Time Out guide is the best guide to NY. They put out a regular guide plus a magazine. Best time to go see the regular sites plus they cover new stores and restaurants. I can answer some of your questions.

Airbnb is the agency for couchsurfing though it is illegal in NYC. People have been tossed out.
In the states suburbs are outside the city limits. You mean neighborhoods. There are many hotels outside Manhattan but they might not be near a subway(not metro). There should be a bus nearby. Use Google maps to find where your hotel is and where the bus or subway is.
The yellow cabs have a tendency to avoid the outer boroughs. Use Uber,Lyft or the local livery cab.
The PATH train is the best way to go from Manhattan to New Jersey. It goes to Jersey City,Hoboken and Newark. NJ Transit runs buses and commuter trains to other Jersey points. Get the buses at the Port Authority bus terminal and the trains at Penn Station.
JFK airport:Airtrain and Long Island railroad. Newark-Liberty:Airtrain and NJ Transit train. LGA:MTA bus. Transit is hell there because of a construction project rebuilding the airport.
Any decent liquor stores sells US wine. Union Square Liquors and Sherry-Lehmann if you have money.
>>
>>1226537
Thanks.

>Airbnb is the agency for couchsurfing though it is illegal in NYC. People have been tossed out.
Wow, serious shit. Is it the same both in NYC and in the State of New York at all? How it's going in New Jersey? And is there any legal way to stay at locals' for freel? Are new yorkers hospitable in general?

>Airtrain and Long Island railroad
>Airain and NJ Transit train
What is the terminus of it? Is it Grand Central or Penn Station, or any other?

>Any decent liquor stores sells US wine. Union Square Liquors and Sherry-Lehmann if you have money.
Heh, all what I'd like to found should be as inexpensive as it possible or free. Sadly I don't have a lot of money. However, can I find US wine in average mall somewhere in neighborhoods?

As I understand it right, there is no any ill will to accents in the city so my rough English will be not a big problem, isn't it?
What is the best place to have an everyday meal? Besides evident world-wide fastfoods.
I should not rent a car if I am not going to go anywhere outside NYC/Jersey City, yep? Will it be easier to use only mass transportation?
Is it possible to face with document audit on a street (by police or something like that)? Should I always have my passport with me?
What is the weather in NYC in early January? Windy, wet and cold, isn't it?

The NJ Transit train that goes by Newark Airport terminates at Penn Station. I'm not sure about the train to Kennedy Airport, but you can look up the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey website as easily as I can.
