Do people go there because they are genuinely interested in the culture, or is it just for beaches/partying/prostitution?

Of course people go there for the culture, and of course people go there for partying and prostitution. That is why Thailand is so overrun with all kinds of tourists; it has something for everyone. You can usually tell who is there for what with a glance though.
>>
>>1234577
I'm going there this summer out of genuine interest in culture. I won't be anywhere near a beach, not the partying type, and have never considered prostitution.
>>

I like both the culture and the ladyboys.

Going to be visiting Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, and Czech republic for 2 weeks at the beginning of August.

Will be visiting cities like Frankfurt, Strasbourg, Bern, Interlaken, Munich, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Cesky Krumlov, and Prague.

I am traveling with 2 friends, would it be smart for me to go to hotels while I am over there or book before hand, does it really matter?

And no hostels, our budget is enough to afford $200-400 Usd rooms per night.

If you're not prepared to stay in hostels let alone sleep rough then yes obviously book ahead.
>>
>>1243853
I'd book a couple of days beforehand, unless you know exactly when you're going from place to place. I like to have a bit of flexibility with that so I usually book 1 or 2 days in advance, you can almost always find a good place available in that amount of time, sometimes you can get better deals since they want to fill rooms last minute.

I'm planning to drive from Belgium to Switzerland and back by car over the course of a long weekend. The primary goal is to visit the HR Giger museum in Gruyères, Switzerland. Ideally I would like to spend a day in Germany or France, a day in Switzerland and then another day in Germany or France before returning home.

Looking for suggestions for things to do and see along the way.

Definitely pass through Alsace, it's a beautiful region, Bern is great, I'm currently studying at the uni there

You might want to drive to interlaken then to gruyères, it'll be more of a drive, but definitely worth those stunning views

if the weather is good you should consider passing by Zurich and take a quick walk along the lake around Opernhaus and Bellevue area. and if you are already there, you might as well make a quick excursion to the ETH Polyterasse and look down from there. even by foot it's a rather short walk and you can go straight through the old city

lemme show it on the map. I also mark two park houses. I never used them before but you could park your car for an hour and do a quick trip around

orange highlights many possible paths you can take, red is higher priority locations that I would visit but most important definitely is Opernhaus and Bellevue (the red line along the lake with cross on it). taking the short trip through the city is secondary

again, only if the weather is good, otherwise not worth it IMO

Is this place even real? Silent Hill would be less scary than this place. It fills me with sadness. Why is Mississippi considered a vacation spot?

I lived there for a year when I was like 2-3. My first memories are of a townhouse complex in Jackson. Needless to say I got the fuck out of there.

Going to be heading out backpacking in the next 4-6 months, but am concerned about how to keep /fit/ while doing it.

Anyone have any advice on keeping /fit/? Where am I going to find gyms on the daily? I'm not talking cardio. I don't want to lose my gains.
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1243748

Make sure to eat enough and do bodyweight exercises.

You haven't specified where you will be travelling, so it's hard to give advice on how to find local gyms.

Just enjoy your holiday and go to the gym when you go back home. You can easily get your gains back
>>
I lost about 15lbs in 2 months. I am a skinny fuck to be fair and didn't exercise. But all the walking in hot weather, jetlag, sporadic meals and partying are a surefire way to lose gains quickly.

Just eat lots and do push ups everyday. Squats with your backpack on. I met a few guys that took resistance bands with them
>>
>>1243753
Its very open ended and not structured at the moment (looking at Asia/Europe), so probably not going to help.

I guess I'm just after more general trips, and any advice others can give that have managed to stay /fit/ whilst travelling

>3 weeks to explore Central Europe & Balkans this summer
>Just starting to plan everything
>Would likely start in Budapest
Right now I'm considering these places:
>Budapest
>Bratislava
>Zakopane
>Auschwitz
>Vienna
>Ljubljana
>Julian Alps
>(Lake) Bled
>Dubrovnik
>Zagreb
>Sarajevo
>Mostar
>Novi Sad
>Belgrade

I will travel with my girlfriend. Neither of us care much about beaches, but a city like Dubrovnik seems very nice. We like history, walking around cities, nature, etc.

I'm currently thinking of two possible routes -- probably something like a combination of Hungary, Austria, Slovakia, and Poland, or Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, and Serbia.

Do any of those stand out as somewhere not worth visiting?
I have already been around the Czech Republic and much of Poland, so those places are largely absent.

For nature, I was considering either the Julian Alps of Slovenia or the Morskie Oko near Zakopane. Maybe it would be good to go to Poprad and

There's very little to do in Bratislava, but most of the rest of Slovakia is really beautiful, check out a hostel called the Ginger Monkey up in the Tatras mountains.

Ljubljana is boring and small, worth a day at most. Lake Bled has great access to the best parts of Slovenia and is a good base of operations. Head to lake Bohinj.

Vienna is ok but rather expensive. Once I'd gawped at the architecture I was rather underwhelmed. Worth a day or two.

Budapest is an amazing, vibrant city despite the hoardes of tourists. Worth a visit for sure.

Zagreb is shit.

Hope this helps you decide on a route anon, have an amazing trip!
>>
>>1243573

Don't spend more than a day in Mostar. There is nothing to do besides the old bridge and there are loads of tourists daytripping from Croatia in the summer.

Also, as already mentioned, you shouldn't spend more time than absolutely necessary in Bratislava
>>
>>1243754
While I second this in general, I have to mention that you might want to sleep in Mostar. Daytime Mostar and nighttime Mostar are totally different. Plus hotels are cheap.

I've been offered a job in Prague, salary of 37500 CZK before taxes, is that enough to live well? I would like to rent a small studio if possible, but don't mind sharing an appartment, and I don't smoke or have expensive hobbies.

Also, any trustworthy pages or agencies for renting? I'm not renting without seeing the place first, but I'd like to have some appointments when I arrive. Plus, don't want to be charged the "foreigner" fee.

Finally, any tips? Taxes, doctors, bureaucracy, areas to avoid...? I've been there before as a tourist and loved the city, looking forward to experience what is it like living there.

Look at numbeo.com to get a sense of the cost of living.
>>
>>1243142
Looks like a good salary to me, but I read different things about taxes, from a 15% to a 40% deduction for that salary. That changes things.
>>
Czech here living and working in Prague.
37500 is a bit above average salary in Prague. Not great but many people would be happy for it.
For several last years there were major legislative issues with building new stuff in Prague so prices of flats and subsequently the prices of rents went high.
It really depends where your studio would be located. Prices range from 10k to 30k just for Most desirable parts to live in are Vinohrady, Letná, Dejvice, Nové Město and Vršovice. Vinohrady is really nice place but prices are high unless you are lucky or live in a house before reconstruction (you can find those). Letná and Vinohrady are the most "hip and cool" places here.
There are no bad palces you should avoid. Prague in general is really safe city esepcially compared to places like London, Paris or Rome. There are no ghettos, worst thing could meet would be few gypsies. That said there is a crime of course but mostly not violent. If I was to tell one quarter you should not visit it would be Libeň, but even there is nothing to fear really.

https://www.sreality.cz/en/search/to-rent/apartments

This is the most used webpage for selling/renting houses and flats. There are others but this one is trusthworthy and in english as well. That doesn't mean you couldn't be scammed sadly.

Living in Prague is really comfortable. We have great and cheap public transport, if you like riding a bike it is a bit complicated but situation is getting better. Younger generation (15-30) speaks english although some of them only on a basic level. We have free education (even university) and free healthcare. Healthcare is on sufficient level even when compared to western Europe. Taxes are high, not Denmark high but certainly higher than in UK for example.
We have same prices of elcetronics as are in the western countries wich makes it overpriced compared to our salaries. But it's not a big deal.

B-but muh anonymous 4chan posters told me Japanese people work 90 hours a week and are all alcoholics and have dysfunctional families where they hate their wives and their children don't even know their fathers and they all commit suicide and rape and molest each other on trains and also they don't have any hobbies or have fun or relax and also they are all racist and the government is corrupt and covers up all crimes and they all fake kindness and hate each other and also they don't have sex and their birth rate is falling and they are DOOMED (even though according to demography (which is fake) all developed countries eventually experience a drop in birth rate which is backed up by statistics of many European countries (these statistics are fake like all statistics about Japan))!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Teaching english isn't a real job.

I want to go to Ethiopia next year. Should I book a tour, like a 15-16 days tour of the North with an Ethiopian company, and just do the travelling to and from the country by myself, or would it be fine to "backpack" the country and just book a couple of shorter tours to some of the more dangerous places, like the Danakil Depression?

I'm really excited about seeing the country, and I know that it's possible to travel solo, so don't tell me that it's too much of a risk - I'd rather just like to hear from someone who has experience or maybe knows someone who has done it.

Oh and I don't think I'll be doing the Omo Valley, it seems like it's mostly just a human zoo kind of thing
>>
>>1237850
I think you are sort of asking people who do not know you to evaluate whether Ethiopia falls inside your comfort range for solo travel. Not sure that is possible. Might work better if you give us some feel for your travel experience, I guess.

And I agree, avoid "Human Zoo" sit where possible. Unless you are into that I guess.

Why not just be quiet, and let OP get advice from someone who has been there...what he asked for initially. You don't have to reply to every thread, you know. It moves slowly here.

OP, most tourists do the exact same set of historic sights, which requires a lot of driving, and they're popular. So popular,so much so, that they call it the "historic circuit" and so it might actually be very cost effective for you to join a tour, but of course to do your real traveler cultural immersion, you will want some time without a tour. Students learn in English in their school days, so you will not have language issues in the cities and tourist sites, at least. As far as safety goes, christian country, don't even worry. But, being alone, after dark, being incapacitated when alone, and other common sense is just your paramount way of life when traveling anyway.

Hi /trv/ I'm about to set out on a huge USA road trip, covering 12-15 thousand miles over 3 months. To those of you who have done the "Great American Road Trip" could you please advise me on any interesting places/food/historical sites off the beaten path?

Of course I'll hit the bucket list spots like the Grand Canyon and the PCH, but give me your hidden gems. I'm especially interested in significant historical sites and great regional cuisine, like Chesapeake Bay crabs and various regional BBQ styles.

As of now my plan is to travel south along the east coast, starting in the NYC area. Avoiding 95 as much as possible and stopping in places like Virginia Beach, the Outer Banks, Charleston, Savannah, and St. Augustine before getting to the Miami area.

From South Florida the next major stop is New Orleans. No idea what to do or see along the way.

From New Orleans I want to head north through the Mississippi Delta, go to Memphis, St. Louis and Kansas City, before heading to Denver. I've heard the drive through Kansas is long and boring so any tips on things to check out are appreciated.

I have no idea which direction to head in once I hit Denver. I'm torn between heading south and checking out New Mexico (Taos, Chaco Canyon, etc), northwest to the PNW, or southeast to southern California?

I have a lot of family and friends spread out all over the country including most of the places I've mentioned, so lodging will not be a big expense. Time is not an issue and I have $10,000 budgeted.

Any and all suggestions are appreciated :)
