Basically this. Also, based on the stuff he talked about in his last Q&A, he was getting tired of having to legally go to bat for 4chan (people making bomb threats, posting celeb nudes, organizing raids, etc.).

It also seems like he was getting less and less entertained by the site in general, since it's steadily declined in quality over the course of the last decade.

Regardless, the site seems to be staying the course just fine without him. If anything, the administration team has become even more hands-off.

There's never been a shred of reputable evidence to support the "Moot tried to literally sell 4chan to SJWs" theory. There's some fanfiction MSPaint-tier IRC bullshit that people made up, depicting Moot as rambling incoherently about making 4chan more financially feasible through sanding off its rougher edges/making it SJW-friendly, followed by a vague threat of pulling the plug on the site if people don't get on board.

There's an equally stupid theory that he crossed paths with Anita Sarkeesian at a con. And in an hour's time, convinced him to become a cuckold/feminist/SJW/proxy, as if she were some kind of Lovecraftian cosmic deity with absolute influence over anyone that meets her face-to-face.

The much much much simpler explanation (and the one he's consistently given) is that he just didn't feel like putting in the work to maintain the site anymore.

I suspect the creation of 4chan is going to be his defining career highlight for the rest of his life, but he seems to be doing pretty well all things considered. As far as I know, he's still working for Google these days. And it wouldn't surprise me if Google is filled with other oldfags that grew up on 4chan.
