I suppose it's a wee bit out of the scope of Squirrel & Hedgehog, but even the melting pot of the USA (despite its whitebread Army generalisation and stereotyping) could have been shown off with more species beyond wolves. Domestic dogs? A mix of assorted dogs for most of the general population groups within the USA, like whites (and shit, that's generalising too), blacks (ditto), latino? Pair them with an animal that could represent them sensibly based on cultural significance, geographical location and availability of African animal species (inb4 apes), maybe with the consideration how easily they can be made recognizable for animation and design.

North: Egyptians, crocodiles
West: Yoruba, wild fowl (religious ties); Akan, porcupine (emblem of the Ashanti Kingdom); Yoruba, African elephant (lol Ivory Coast)
Central: Mongo, leopard; Kongo, lion (great cats of Central Africa).
East: Somali, Grevy's zebra; Oromo, Red-fronted gazelle
South: Shona, fish eagle (one of many totem animals); Zulu, Nguni cattle (a particularly long-horned species, also Shaka reference)
