Players joined the villain

In my DnD game last night, the players basically decided to become the bad guys.

So the premise is: dying world, the good gods are dead, all the evil gods are coming out of the woodwork to fight over the ruins of humanity. The rich and decadent southern city-states are centers of corruption, while the northern not!Germanics are the only uncorrupted people left. Its quite Conan-esque.

The players defeated one minor evil god and before he died, he revealed to them that his rival god was growing more powerful and would take over the world if not stopped. This particular god was a god of lusts that the players fought before and already saw some of his handiwork. It wasn't just sexual lust, but any kind of lust: battle lust, lust for gold, power, etc. When he takes control of a person they become his puppet and he wraps them up in illusions to control them, and they end up doing atrocious things.

So the players infiltrate his cult, fail, get discovered, and start murdering cultists en masse. After killing off most of the warriors, the fighting turns to loving as the female cultists can't help but admire the northmen's strength and virility, and essentially beg to be their willing slave and concubines.

The players receive a vision from the evil god, offering them to be the kings of the new world and rule over mankind in his name.

The players literally cannot see any harm in ruling the earth as kings and chosen champions of a god, with harems of willing slaves; and actually agree.

Which was entirely unexpected because now I am at a loss how to continue.

The premise of the god is essentially that he takes over your soul. So I'm not sure how to push this on the players without taking away control of their characters.

On the other hand, I could just drop a Bad End, everyonr rerolls and starts a new campaign in 10 years fighting their own past characters as evil kings; which seems like a fun idea, but it leaves so much unresolves and seems like an unsatisfying finish to the story arc.

This is a great idea.
If you're lucky they'll think you set it up beforehand and did all that other stuff as a prologue to the REAL game instead of just reacting to how pathetically easy they were to sway.
When they make new characters, don't immediately reveal that their old ones are the villains, and make sure you show that the new villains are horrible, even worse then the last guy.

Just roll with it. You mentioned there's other evil gods, so make the campaign revolve around gathering armies and fighting their champions for dominion over the world. Also trying not to get replaced by someone more willing to debauch themselves.

You can also add in an aspect of moral struggle: give the players ample warning about what the service to an evil god entails, preferably in the form of examples within the setting, leave them options to turn back from the path of evil. If they don't, you're entitled to give them a suitable Bad End when they cease to be useful once their job is done.

You've mentioned illusions, so use that. Don't take control away from them, just change how you describe the world so that it makes the PCs more likely to act for the dark god's benefit. Also make sure that you'll give them hints that something is not right. Though not too obvious ones(try subtle things like discrepancies in your descriptions or seemingly nonsensical behaviors by illusions when they don't fit their real-world counterparts) , although something blunt like being temporarily disenchanted by a good-aligned force to see all the atrocities they have brought upon the world would make for an excellent "oh fuck" moment somewhere near the end of the campaign.

Why do the god needs to control them if they are willingly making what he wants? Make him drop illusion here and there, a couple of soft words of knowledge and wisdom. And so on. There is no need to use overt means of control when much softer touch will suffice.

If some of them try to stray from the true path then the Big Bad starts exerting more obvious power. Like trying to turn other players against those that try to work against him or even going for direct body puppet thing while gloating over the fact that PC in question willingly agreed to that in the first place.

What's edgy about a bunch of adventurers choosing the "easy" way and living as kings ?

If anything, they are doing the right thing and fighting evil by being a lesser evil... which in such a setting could be the only good way.

Otherwise, yes, go with >>55431246 :
They are now warlords trying to increase their power by crushing enemies of their god and taking whatever riches, slaves and lands they can.
They get willing cultists ready to follow them to the bitter end as long as they serve the god.
And they might even get some awesome power from said god.

Not so bad until said god starts asking for sacrifices and other proofs of devotion.
While it might feel "ok" to decapitate the enemy soldiers taken prisoners after a battle, it might be hard for them to agree to sacrifice civilians in very painful ways.

If not enough, wait for them to fail a mission and have their god ask for them to choose one of their own to be sacrificed on the altar so the others can be forgiven.
Will one of them agree to pay for the others ?
Will they just gang on the weakest link ?
Or will they put brotherhood above "faith" and just abandon their path to power, risking their god's hire ?

I like this idea better and it will eventually come to this anyway

Let the players start out with doing their own things, but have the evil lust god slowly want them to do terrible things, or put them in awkward situations
challange their veiws , when one starts to vear from the gods path, start exerting more controll on them untill you cause them to revolt.

I actually like this a lot.

They see themselves as good champions who fight against evil people and evil gods, the people love them, their enemies are hideous monsters... So they basically do the same thing they have been doing this whole time; just with a lot more support from higher-up. Eventually, they find out that their own people have fallen to evil and need to be cleansed. People on the streets run when they see them. The monsters hide inside their cottages and beg for their children to be spared. Things stop making sense according to the narrative they believe, until the illusion shatters and they realize they became what they fought.

I'd say change "god of lusts" to "god of desire." And then clarify that "Desire" also means envy, ambition, etc. Because "lust" while used correctly, still has a specific connotation.

Usually, people who pick the "easy" way go down the route of "edgy" such as rape, torture, and bestiality. Of course, the few times I've played campaigns that are similar to yours (world is shit, evil has taken over, good is weak, all can be corrupted) have ended poorly and massive wanking over how amazingly edgy their characters are. I'm not saying you're going to do that, but bad experiences tell me to be wary over things such as that.

Tell them that their characters truly died in soul and spirit after accepting that bargain. Maybe an afterlife awaited them, or maybe even that was lost to the influence of their deity. Say that they have to discard their backstories and personalities.

And then let them make new ones to occupy the shells of their heroes, provided or created by their new god, and continue playing Depraved Fantasy Conquest Simulator. They may even believe that they are the same people as before, but tell them they truly are not.

Well, they have temple prostitutes and so on. The evil god is a primordial snake that was imprisoned long ago for changing form and seducing a goddess. He became a fertility god, but he also infected the souls of his worshippers.

Also, for clarification: not all the good gods are dead. The final battle between good and evil didn't go as prophesied, good guys lost; but a handful of einherjar-like angels became the new good gods. They are sheltering the comatose body of the son of the old head god, who is slowly regenerating.

So, send the party to fight other evil gods for the golry of their new deity. And let them discover some things about the good comatose god. then they confront some of the angels.

Well they are trying to take over the world. Flesh out other factions and gods as well as the world map.

Because once the party have their new resources in order, they are going to have to go about securing allies of convienince and figuring out how they are going to deal with their enemies.

I didn't realize they were possessed either until I read this.
I mean it was kind of implied because they are cultists to a god who messes with his followers, but really if you want players, or readers, to pick up on a detail like that then you need to state it clearly.

I'm. Not OP but it may be the god actually just wants to possess lots of people (or lots of particular kinds of people) and his cults appealing and the phony gospel he has them believe and preach about him is just a means to the end of getting more of those humans to possess.
