It's too reliant on having your 'make dinos cheaper' creatures out, which themselves are not dinos, and the deck actually can't get going until t3. You drop your entire hand and then pray.

So with everything revealed I want to start brewing on my Revel in Riches control deck ASAP and get to testing that shit.

Put together a rough first build for it that's Dimir with Vraska in it rather than Grixis, using Drake Haven/Favorable Winds.
It's basically that Dimir Drakes deck with some shit replaced for Treasure support, really.

So Flying Pirates seem pretty fucking unfair with Jace and the Proliferate Pirate from Aether Revolt.
>>
>>55407654
Chandra is played in all formats mate.
>>
>>55408216
Skyship Plunderer into Jace indeed is pretty fucking absurd.
>>
>>55408216
Is an army of Jace even that powerful? He makes a 2/2 every other turn and has conditional looting. Even with 2 or 3 on the board he's not overly threatening.

I'm thinking the same thing. Why not Walk the Plank over Essense Extraction? Or is the gain 3 crucial, you think?
>>
Is Bone Picker worth it in a UB flyingmen.dec? Would he be too slow? I feel like I'm already hard pressed for mana, to dump my hand and still keep up interaction, that he would only serve to clunk up my hand. Sure he combos well with Fatal Push, but I'd rather just play a much lower curve and guarantee I can always cast my creatures. Or would the abundant removal my creatures face make his inclusion more than considerable? Thoughts?
>>
>>55408049
That sounds like the exact same doom and gloom that happens ever time a new set is released.

If you were to make a deck around a set of these, what cards would you go for?
>>
How UG merfolk looking? Thinking about playing UG merfolk or a stompy deck
>>
>>55413243
Opt
Shock
Lightning Strike
Spell Pierce
Favorable Winds
maybe some card draw like Glimmer or Hieroglyphic if you want to top end the deck with a Locust God.
>>
Looking at limited looks like it favors Gruul.
Black has much more removal than I anticipated, but there's no real hope for good control

Black White looks stylish, but midgame to endgame is going to be overran by dinosaurs
Pirates look like they have a shot at a decent tempo deck, but again, dinosaurs
Merfolk look the worst of them all

What do you guys think? I thinking about prerelease and drafting to get into standard.
>>
>>55413707
>Play prerelease
>"upgrade" prerelease pool of cards to be semi playable in Standard

That's my plan anyway.
>>
>>55411462
I really doubt we'll see Revel in Riches control, you might as well just cut the revel in riches to get better at controlling instead of adding a lot of cards for your win condition.

We have higher chances of seeing some kind of turbo revel in riches deck, maybe even with fogs
>>
Why is ramunap so popular? The card itself is an awful value. 4 mana for 2 damage AND you lose a land? It just seems like a shit card to me.
>>
>>55413848
The value doesn't matter when you're winning games off it. It's reach on a goddamn land. It patches up a big hole in aggro, which is "I got my opponent really low and they stabilized"

Instead of hoping you topdeck some burn, you spend 2 turns and 2 lands to do the final 4 damage. It's a consistent clock, and on a card-type that is very hard to interact with (I think literally only Disallow in standard).

What lands are you comparing this to? Valakut? Valakut is literally fucking broken, not only in Modern but the standard it was printed in. Ramunap is a balanced Valakut.
>>
>>55410015
Because Walk the Plank is a Sorcery. Needed an instant-speed kill spell and not having Red limits my options pretty badly.
>>
>>55413848
>enemy is on 2 life
>you have 4 lands in play and no creatures in play
>draw a burn spell, win
>draw a creature, maybe win
>draw a land, lo- oh no wait you also win with a land
It turns your lategame draws from 1/3 chance of nothing to always deal at least 2 damage if you draw a land
>>
What memebrew should I play? I used to roll an Aetherflux deck but I played Colossuses in it and they're shit now that Hedron Archive rotates. I could upgrade it somehow but I want something new, possibly not treasure related because that looks like shit.

I think the merfolk engine is gonna revolve around this guy here. It's Oketra's monument for merfolk. I think a curve of metallic mimic into this into herald of secret streams is gonna be your nut draw. The question is where you get the card draw from. I've seen some merfolk lists use growing rites of itlimoc to top out with Tishana, voice of thunder, but I also think the U/G nissa is worth investigating.

Just try and break this enchantment in half, you can do it.

Cathartic Reunion
Strategic Planning
Cryptic Serpent
Crash Through
Fling (haha got em)
Lightning Axe + Fiery Temper (Oh fuck, exit those cards)

This will never stop bothering me. 'nonbinary' in the SJW Tumblr sense indicates more than two genders, not less than two. The term for 'we are all the same and don't have gender' is agender. This is one of the most blatant and shallow forms of pandering I've ever seen from WotC. The Myr are also not male or female, but I don't see Maro going off about how progressive these nonbinary metallic gnomes are.

I've been doing pretty well with this deck on cockatrice, though I know that isn't saying a lot. It's a wonder how many games go to me just using Adanto, The First Fort at their end step 6 turns in a row before landing sanctum seeker and winning.

I've yet to face anyone actually playing board clears. I'd hope Arguel's Blood Fast, Bloodcrazed paladin, and infinite tokens would be enough to grind through.

Not useless does not mean 'is good' of course.
>>
>>55421162

How come every new RDW has to have a new name? From Rabble Red Boss Sligh to Atarka Red to Rumunap Red. Why not just RDW?
>>
>>55405833
Nowhere currently.
>>
>>55421898
Every RDW is a RDW, but from season to season, to format to another the those titles are used to differntiate one from another.

If I were to use a RDW in modern would you know it's the Rumanap Red or Burn?
You would say burn, but you never know.
Sultai and Boros present the colors in a implicit way, instead UW or Mono-Green present the colors in esplicit way, just like RDW, but sometimes colors aren't enought to diferentiate two decks.

yes, it shuts down all plus and minus counter strategies, energy for players included. gonna be good against merfolk and the new enchantments that flip into lands, might spike up.

On one hand, it's nice that there are no hugely overpowered mythics and the set has some actual hate and response cards.

On the other, all this is doing is making Kaladesh decks like energy stronger. Temur Energy is going to be unbeatable except for the occasional RDW by sheer tempo alone.

seems like a good idea, i might wanna pick some tezzis up if they are only around three bucks. there is a faster way to ramp, and im using it for a revel in riches booty deck. i think using inspiring sanctuary and such to ramp into revel in riches and start killing things might be a fun plan.

ornithopter(or turn1 slither blade) + dowsing dagger turn two nets you a treasure and three mana land on turn three (after equipping it and dropping a land nets you five open mana for RiR turn three), while they get two chump blockers you can get treasure for later. hell, you could even play more dowsing daggers to get their creature count up to ten then cast hour of revelations with just a lost vale to win the game! there is alot of boardwipes for three mana nowadays (wink wink, nudge nudge). also with inspiring sanctuary you can improvise and sac a treasure or two if needed to spell swindle a big card or HoR(6cmc) for more treasure than you used to cast. of course more riches mean more booty per kill so having a playset might not be a bad idea if you ramp quick enough. vrask makes treasure while killing too and tezz can kill or ramp.

Deathtouch, 6 power, Wrath effects (Bontu's Last Reckoning for example). Take your pick.

Star of Extinction or Doomfall, Star is unplayable though unless you can ramp way faster than your opponent.

Your deck should have 40 cards and no more. You want 17-18 lands and should generally stick to playing only two colours.

Look at the spoilers for Ixalan ahead of time to determine which commons and uncommons are the best in their respective colours and then for look for these cards in your sealed pool. You want to build your deck with the best colours in your pool.
>>
>>55434086
>Look at the spoilers for Ixalan ahead of time to determine which commons and uncommons are the best in their respective colours
How do I understand if a card is good or bad? I already know I definitely can't do it.
>>
>>55433817
Watch videos or/and read articles about the sealed format as a whole
Basic guidelines should get you most of the way there, then it's just individual card evaluation
>>
>>55434140
Remember B.R.E.A.D

B - Bombs. Cards that if unanswered will win you the game. Planeswalkers and Powerful Creatures.

R - Removal. Cards that kill shit, especially your opponent's bombs.

E - Evasion. Cards that can get around clogged board states. Stuff with Flying for example.

A - Aggro. Small, efficient creatures.

D - Dregs. The shit that's left.

Prioritise your cards in that order and you should be golden.
>>
>>55434140
Take a look at ChannelFireball.com, they'll be doing a set review that evaluates the cards. They post an article on each colour every day.

Sealed is one of the more skill-testing formats to play (despite what some players will tell you) but pre-releases are always great fun.
>>
>>55434181
BREAD is quite outdated now (but still good for new players). Quadrant theory is a better method to use when evaluating cards.

>>55434140
Wait till like a couple of days before prerelease then watch/listen to limited resources card rating. They might not be right 100%, but it will give you a good understanding on what's good/not.

>>
>>55433817
Keep in mind that limited (draft&sealed) is won and lost on creatures. Don't try and push synergies (especially tempting in sets like this were there's the obvious vampires vs pirates vs dinosaurs vs merfolk) or weird strategies unless you have a bonkers set of cards. A mediocre creature that turns sideways and keeps your opponent from turning their creatures sideways is more often than not better than some corner case instant/sorcery/enchantment.

Removal is incredibly useful, start by looking at which color(s) of cards you got have the most unconditional removal, and see if you have enough creatures in those color(s). If you do, go for that.

Judge cards based on their worst case, not their best case.

In terms of curve, you should have mostly 3-5 mana, and possibly a few 6 or 7 mana spells.

Because this is a pre-release, its much more casual and relaxed. Don't be afraid to ask for help, anyone who isn't a dick will usually be willing to offer advice on specific cards or choices.

>What if I have one or two bombs but no other decent card of that color(s)?

Then you need to ask yourself whether you can splash a third colour to play those bombs. For example, if your best colours are blue and white but you've also opened a Scarab God, it's not unreasonable to add a Swamp or two to your deck to be able to cast it as you only need a single black source to cast it.

You can only really add a third or fourth colour if you have lots of fixing. "Fixing" means lands that tap for more than one colour, spells that let you search for lands or creatures/artifacts that tap for any colour of mana. If you have lots of these cards in your pool, adding an extra colour becomes more viable.

The general rule of limited is that a deck with a load of big flashy spells that can't consistently cast those spells is worse than a deck with a lower power level but more consistency.
>>
>>55434817
>What if I have one or two bombs but no other decent card of that color(s)?
This is a common situation, and a common mistake is to try and force those colors. Instead, you should be looking for the colors with the highest concentration of good cards.

If you have 1 or 2 really good cards in a color, and nothing else, you can try "splashing", i.e. including cards of a different color to your main colors, but including some "fixing", i.e. cards that will help you get the mana just for those cards, for example a land that taps for one of your main colors, but also one of your splashing colors, or spells that let you go look for a land, and then include 3 or 4 basic lands of your splash color.

>>55434891
The flip side to this is that cards with a heavy requirement of a particular colour in their casting cost (like Burning Sun's Avatar) are more difficult to splash because you need more sources of what isn't one of your deck's main colours.

If you're playing a blue-black deck, it would be unwise to try to add Mountains to your deck to cast the Avatar because: A) You need at least three red mana sources in play to cast it, and B) By adding more red mana sources to your deck, you're reducing the number of blue and black sources that you need to cast the rest of your spells - What happens in the games when you have a hand full of blue spells and no blue sources to cast them? You lose.
>>
>>55433817
Some other things

I can't stress this enough:

RARITY DOES NOT MATTER.

Do not even look at the rarity symbols, plenty of rares and mythics are absolute garbage. If you see a rare or mythic with 5+ lines of instructions on it, there's good chance its not going to be good. The rares you want are ones that immediately impact the board, e.g. giving you a powerful creature, removing enemy creatures, drawing lots of cards, or somehow crippling your opponent's ability to play the game.

Don't be afraid of cards which make you discard, especially if those cards also make you draw first (The slang for this is called "looting"). A lot of new players seem to have an aversion to this, don't fall into that trap. Being able to get a new card, and get rid of the worst card in your hand is often the right move.
>>
>>55434817
>>55434891
>>55434947

One thing to add to all this is that with the Treasure mechanic, fixing is readily available in this set, so splashing for bombs really isn't out of the picture.
>>
>>55434958
Rarity does matter to an extent. Rare cards will usually have powerful and unique effects and the best cards in any given set will mostly be rares.

The downside is that some rares are so bad that they're unplayable. A rare like Revel in Riches has a cool effect, but it's completely unreasonable to ever expect to have enough Treasure tokens in play to win a game with it. This means that you're spending five mana and card to do nothing.
>>
>>55434891
>>55434896
How much time are you normally given to build the deck?
The event is gonna start at midnight and I'll finish working at 10, I'm gonna be tired as fuck, hope I'll be able to concentrate enough.

>>55434958
I know, I'm new to playing, not collecting.

The only thing I'm afraid of is not being able to tell what's the worst card under the circumstances of that time.
>>
>>55435049
You'll be given half an hour to open your packs and build your deck.

What I like to do is open all of my packs and sort them by colour, then go through each colour and remove cards that are too bad to play or are for the sideboard (such as cards that destroy artifacts or enchantments).

Then I'll look at what's left for each colour and work out which colours have highest number of average or better cards. I'll also look for bomb cards that will win games by themselves as these are an active draw to a colour.
>>
>>55435042
Yes, the best cards are usually rare, but many new players take the reverse and assume that rare cards are better by being rare. My point was that you should ignore the rarity and look at the cards as individuals.

>>55435049
IIRC deck building is 30 minutes, with 40 minutes per best-2-out-of-3 round.

In terms of finidng the worst card, the quadrant theory the others posted is usually the best way to think about it, tl;dr: Does this help me if I'm loosing or at a stalemate? If yes, its a good card. If it only works if you're already at an advantage, maybe steer clear of it.

This Thursday, the Limited Resources podcast should have their review of all of the commons/uncommons up, give that a listen when you have some time, and that should give you a decent idea of how to proceed.
>>
>>55434033
why has no one mentioned edicts

>>
So has ANYONE figured out a Revel in Riches build yet?
Tried Turbo Fog with it, but that just feels like a worse Approach Turbo Fog, Grixis Control, but that just feels like Grixis Control, losing good control cards for Treasure support, general Treasure Pirates, which were ultimately just throwing chump blockers into the way to hopefully stall long enough and a Dimir Drakes build that had Marauding Looter and the Treasure stuff added, but that didn't have nearly enough kill spells to get stuff off of Revel and won most games from having Vraska or Drake Haven out and snowballing from there.

I really want to be a scurvy pirate and throw tokens through the room when I win, god dammit.
