A while ago I read a book called "the adventures of the abbot de Choisy dressed as a woman".
It's an autobiographical novel by the said abbot (go read about him on wikipedia), all about how he went around france in 1660 or so with a dress on and slept with young girls and no one cared even when they were aware of his gender, except for the fact that the dresses he wore to mass were sometimes seen as inappropriate because too colourful. At one point he talked about the brother of the king (or was it his nephew) liked to crossdress too. But at no point did he or anyone in the book mention what he is, besides a noble.

Depending on the motives of the editors/translators, a lot could have been lost: maybe they didn't want to embarass him / themselves, maybe it was a publicity thing to make him seem more normal, maybe it was just edited to fit social mores of the time and to not shock the delicate sensibilities of the English.
