Hello gents, I am planning on GMing a Word of Darkness game set in the wild west. 1880s period. I've been a fan of spaghetti westerns for a long time, but I am not familiar with the history, rumors, myths about the redskins and such to make a place believable, especially that I have a historian in the party and I don't want to embarrass myself, nor get schooled while GMing.
I need some help in preparation.
Any amusing videos, books or even comic books to get myself acquainted with the feel of the mystery of the great unknown vast lands.

I feel for you, OP. Having an expert (or worse, an "expert") in your group is always a hurdle.
Your best bet is to make it clear to everyone in your group that you are telling a FICTIONAL STORY about a MYTHICAL PERIOD that DIDN'T REALLY EXIST. You might want to talk to your historyfag directly and ask him to shut off his knowledge for the duration of the session.

Better idea: ask his advice on things, but still tell him you are NOT running a true-to-life historical game. This works best if he can be trusted not to metagame too hard.

How do you protect yourself from medusa's gaze?
Is it enough that she can't make eye contact? Could you wear dark shades or goggles to stop yourself from turning to stone?
Or must you yourself avoid from looking her in the eyes? Could you squint or something so that you only see a blur and can't distinct her eyes from her face?
Or must you go thoroughly blind? In that case, what's the range of her gaze? Could she look up at a bird high in the sky and turn it to stone by accident?

A bird probably wouldn't turn to stone because it has no idea what it's looking at.

If we go by mythology - shades or anything else the gaze passes THROUGH are no protection. But reflection of the gaze is safe. So I would imagine some sort of periscope goggles.
Also the creatures lives in in known location, so maybe just douse the whole place in flammable fluid and burn it down?

I more often play the "monster inside, hero outside" type.
A well-respected knight who was completely indifferent to right or wrong, following whatever orders his lord gave.
An antipaladin with the reputation of the paladin he looked exactly like.
A ranger famed for protecting his region from monsters, who only did so because it gave him the chance to legally murder.
That kind of thing.

At a certain degree of complexity, biology and technology start looking very similar. They both have distinct advantages and disadvantages, so blend the two together and make the best use of both.

What methods? Designer babies? Eugenics/master race breeding? "Epigenetics" (see pic)? There's a lot of ways to do itmaster race breeding is best, but none of them occur quickly or easilyu. You can't just "splice" Uri Geller's DNA with cat DNA and come up with Mewtwo, at least not in semi-realistic science fiction.

At the very least medieval world's feel timeless and sustainable, and improvements to technology seem minimal at best With improvements to existing technology like swords and steel. Guns are a new technology that becomes more commonplace in the 16th and 17th century that turns the universe into a world that isn't so timeless. Instead of feeling like it could be anywhere, it feels colonial at best or already industrialized at worst.
Despite the fact that it's wrong, we have this conception that guns don't require skill to function, which takes away the feelings of heroism.

Ib4 "FurFag" but Iron claw manages to balance guns and fantasy together quite well.
That being said I dislike them most of the time because it makes combat boring more times than not. Just two people in cover shooting at each other instead of radical melee fights.
