What if adventurers had to permanently mark their bodies--forever marking them as dangerous men who dwell outside of civilization? The marking act could be highly ritualized.

Once marked, an adventurer would be beyond law. They could do anything without fear of legal entanglements, but so too could anything be done to them--no legal recourse for the adventurer.

Pretty shit, if we assume an otherwise standard D&D-ish elves'n'dorfs setting.

But if you take that "marked murderhobo" as a core feature you could probably make a cool setting around that feature.

So let's start worldbuilding, this is what /tg/ fucking does. What reason would there have to be for "adventurers" to bear this Mark without exception?
Is everyone who adventures Marked, or is it that those who are Marked generally become adventurers?
>>
>>54165713

I feel that if you want to adventure you become Marked; which is a slow process that takes several days to complete and acts as stated in the OP.

You would do this so you could lie, cheat and steal your way to the top; you can be known to handle yourself and work for money to handle things like Monsters and such for money.

I imagine that this would be best used in a Dark themed setting, maybe even post Apocalypse?
>>

>What reason would there have to be for "adventurers" to bear this Mark without exception?
Like prison culture in Russia, it could have started as a sort of imposed branding from the authorities to mark these men off somehow. In time, the practice would come to be appropriated by those being branded--turning it into a mark of pride, and preventing them from rejoining society.

>Is everyone who adventures Marked
An unmarked adventurer might be viewed with suspicion by his fellow adventurers. 'Why doesn't he declare himself' they might think. Armies/guards might grant a sort of begrudging acceptance to outlaws who declare themselves as such--through their markings--but would not take kindly to surreptitious adventurers.

Hey guys could you perform an edge check on my character concept / backstory?

Character is a half orc paladin who was raised by his (human) grandfather and mother.
Grandfather is the head of a small barony, has command of a small garrison of men, faithful follower of Zarus and extremely loyal to his king, was a military commander in his younger days, a gnarled and strict but overall kind hearted man.
Character never received his grandfather's name and isn't in line to inherit title, though he acknowledges him and treats him well, he understands that his grandfather simply cannot make a half orc his legitimate heir.

Never knew who his father was, but understands that he lives in a region where orcish warbands roam and raids are common, his grandfather and mother's refusal to discuss the topic of his father make it fairly obvious that he was a child of rape following a raid, he doesn't bring it up, largely because it's exactly the kind of thing you would want to avoid thinking about.

He worked around his grandfather's household as a blacksmith's assistant until his teenage years when he, with his mother and grandfather's blessings sought a squirehood under the paladins of Zarus.

When asked why he wanted to do such a thing by the paladins he simply explained that he understood his origins, even if it was never spelled out to him, and that he wished to devote his life to protecting humans like his mother from monsters like his father. Highly irregular though it was to have a half orc paladin of Zarus, they thought this a good enough explanation and appointed him to a very elderly paladin by the name of Wynton, whose crusading days were long gone. Nevertheless he served the Paladin well as effectively a carer and dogsbody until he passed away of old age after becoming close friends

I'm thinking he would probably take up the oath of Devotion rather than Vengeance as he saw first hand how unhappy the desire for Vengeance turned his grandfather while he was growing up.

It was customary that upon serving faithfully to your Paladin's death, be it natural or in battle, a squire would generally earn their paladinhood, however the leaders of the order had decided that it would be in the best interests of <character> to continue squirehood under a paladin who saw more combat, so that he would be ready for the rigors of combat.

The idea currently is that my character will be introduced to the party alongside his new paladin as a squire while they are sent to scout for orc warband activity near the borders of the country, and that the new paladin will be killed in an encounter, forcing him to step up to the plate and take up his sword, as it were.
>>
I was thinking the character may have a habit of being disgruntled at being referred to as a half orc, asking that people instead call him a half human

Is that dumb?
>>
I just read about Zarus properly and I must say I had the wrong god, they'd kill my character on sight and they're evil aligned, oops.

Probably someone like Torm or Pelor instead?

I find myself frustrated and stuck in terms of games to run. On one hand I enjoy the mechanical complexity and verisimilitude a detailed RPG system brings. On the other hand this can become incredibly restricting and result in players attempting to resolve everything mechanically rather than narratively.

Narrative based systems resolve this by ignoring such mechanics in favour of much looser and broader scene setting and the idea of 'failing forwards' This allows for far more dramatically compelling games but at the expense of a GM being able to create and run a realistically compelling world with internal rules that mechanically make sense and aren't just based on endless 'mother may I' rolls.

Is there a system with a happy middle ground between the two?

Use a point-based system

Legends of the Wulin is great for having detailed and interesting narratively-focused combat

Burning Wheel is a rules-heavy character driven game. Although most of the detail is modular so it may not suit you too well.

Alright /TG/ I need your help, looking for inspiration for inq28 warbands, in this case need preferably historical-based pics of noblemen and their retainers/retinues, nationality is unimportant.

Any artwork would help, also any articles or links etc.

>run a game in a homebrew universe
>give the players notes to read on it and make a character accordingly
>one dude asks about the Blackblood Tribe I have noted as "unfriendly"
>inform him that they are a hardy tribe whose blood is literally tar black, they are very hostile and keep to themselves unless something very important is up (hellbeasts attack, exiled for crimes against the tribe), not aided by the fact that they can only reproduce with other Blackbloods only
>his eyes light up and I wait eagerly to see what he makes
>"Here is my character, Ludvic Alcatraz. She is born in the Blackblood tribe, but she is the first Whiteblood. She has all the resistances of the Blackbloods but can also mate with normal people. Everyone in the village loves her and thinks she should be their leader and lead them into greatness. Because of that she got exiled by everyone who was jealous of her. She came all the way to the other side of the world to start her own tribe and show the Blackbloods they were wrong."

Thanks for reminding me why I prefer games that take place around a modern time period, and near future.
>>
The only fucktard here is you for not doing a Session 0, especially in regards to a unique homebrew setting.

You make characters at the table, with the other players. They are born at the table, and they will die at the table.

Had a fellow player who legitimately did not grasp why the rest of the party left his character behind for playing this. It was some barbarian archetype that didn't even get much in return for it, but he just liked the idea of 'going crazy' when he raged.

After our characters discovered that the hard way when he took a couple missing swings at my fighter post-combat, we told the barbarian not to follow us, and went on our way.

He wasn't That Guy or anything, but he didn't seem to understand why a group would leave someone that had just swung an axe at them behind. It was only a minor speedbump in the game since the GM let him drop the archetype and reintroduce his character on better terms later, but it's a fitting anecdote for the thread.

Could be fun if it's subtle. As a DM, I would be concerned that it would either jar people out o the game or cause me to make less-than-stellar encounters because I'm working around the move instead of the story.

As an amateur magician, I'm more concerned with their only being a few moves that will work with the miniatures and the more a move is repeated the more obvious it is.

Personally, I would save it for the big, big things where it's going to have maximum impact for minimum disruption.
