Just play them without powergaming, it's really not hard.
>>
>>54209892
>Thats because people who write them probably have no clue as to what they are really capable off.
Well...yes. That's kind of my whole point. Whoever writes the setting and fluff for the book didn't pay close attention to making sure the mechanics and setting were good representations of each other. That's why mages in the fiction or simply general setting talk fail at things that should be easy and so on.
>Saying mages dont act like X because some shitty writer doesnt get them is stupid.
That's the one thing you're wrong on. If some setting writer says mages act like this or that, that's canon. That's how they do indeed work. They get to decide what canon is, regardless of how poorly thought out it is
>>54209936
I don't think it's really something to 'fix'. If the flaws are that deeply ingrained you just learn to deal with them or play something else.
>>
>>54209936
>>mages in awakening are never presented as constantly having immunity to conventional firearms and also always knowing whats coming up and so on and so on, so the PC's are a bit of an oddity.

So an actual good question would be, how one could nerf mages to reflect their fluff?

We had lots of fun together. Remember those Mordheim tourneys? Those First Edition RPG crazy campaigns? The battles with Dog of War and Chaos unified army lists? Yeah, good times, babeh, but now is over. We can't keep the spirit of the 80s alive for much longer. It was time to go to the Grey Heavens.
You will be still alive in my dreams and memories and in those who you brought so much fun.

I made this thing. What should I change/add/remove? I want to make a backstory/character creation workbook as well, and a campaign planning workbook. Any ideas for what should be included?

The end goal would be to have a big workbook you could crack open whenever you're going to run a game and just fill it out for an easy start. You can fill out the same page multiple times as necessary. (ie- the 'region' page could be the entire planet, or do it again for the country, then again for the city...)

Backstory/character creation workbook should have-
>figure out abilities
>physical description
>possessions
>important past events
>3x3x3 style npc worksheet (mentors, family, enemies, etc)

Campaign planning workbook should have-
>Brief summary of the 'idea' of your campaign, possible systems,
>win condition for campaign/PC goals
>important npc sheet with brief but important info
>session planner sheet
>post-session recap sheet
>dungeon planner sheet
>encounter planner sheet
>trap/puzzle
>player sheets where you track their goals and arcs
>party sheet where you keep important info
>outline for entire story with major plot beats you'd like to hit
>flowcharts to pre-plan important events (ie- if the players go left, this happens, if the players go right, this happens instead)

Any ideas for other shit to include, or things to change/add to the worldbuilding one?

Dragons are supposed to be brilliant, wise, and charismatic on the level of the greatest player races in the world. But where do they learn everything they know? They live in a cave and are chased away by their parents as soon as they're a threat. As a young dragon there's no way they can collect books or steal them in enough quantity to actually feed their curiosity. There's no way they're wiser than elderly sages when all they do is sit in their cave and bully kobolds.

For that matter, who the hell is the dragon talking to in their lair that let's them become as charismatic as their stats say they are? As territorial as dragons are, they should be greasy scaled, pale, cave-dwelling fedora tippers.

Explain this shit, /tg/!

It's all about time, anon. Dragon's live for a fuck long time, and as such they spend a lot of their time observing the world, seeing how it works, ect. Plus, their brains are just constantly expanding, taking in information naturally in a way mortals cannot. Sure they might be fucking robots in their early years, they mostly just eat dudes and steal shit during that time, but once they've got some age on them, they figure all that shit out.

>>
I like to imagine clever dragons, which according to 3.5 mechanics, my bible, naturally all gain sorcery casting abilities, can spend all their spells a day in their downtime divining random people, librarians, dignitaries. They're more than capable of defending themselves without them, and their lairs are so secluded, confrontation is rarely on the agenda. They have money to hire scouts and book thieves. Some prefer investment and start banks, endorse chariot races, all in a polymorphic guise.

Building a setting for an ordinary 5e campaign in a medieval fantasy setting, with all the usual antics of adventuring and mercenary work. The issue is, I've come up with an economy-based idea that suits the setting I'm making but I'm not sure whether it would help or hinder the campaign itself.

The empire in which the campaign is based is invested in minimizing social mobility and the movement of its subjects between its provinces. As such, they have developed currency in a fashion that is purposefully difficult to possess, in the form of trade bars. Although copper and silver coins are used, the more valuable forms of currency come in the form of silver and gold trade bars. Due to the empire's gold production being limited to a specific region of a specific province, the gold bars mentioned above are rarely used and are a luxury that's found primarily in the coffers of the empire's ruling elite and the caravans of tax collectors.

The exchange rates and weights are as follows:
>A copper piece = 0.01gp, a purse of 50 pieces is equivalent to 1lb.
>A silver piece = 0.1gp, a purse of 50 pieces is equivalent to 1lb.
>A silver trade bar = 10gp, a single bar is 2lb.
>A gold trade bar = 250gp, a single bar is 5lb.

In practical in-games terms, this means that for every 5gp a person carries, unless they've got their hands on one of the rare gold bars, they're going to be weighed down by 1lb. Considering that plenty of items that aren't even magical can cost upwards of 100gp, this makes transportation and possession of wealth a rather difficult and awkward affair.
This is intentional as the empire is putting a great deal of effort into making travel between provinces difficult for its ordinary subjects. Wealth cannot easily be carried on one's person. An individual needs to either find a safe location to store their wealth, invest it in goods and services or possess means of transporting it, such as a horse-drawn cart.

Continuing this in another post.
>>
>>54168264
The issue comes from the fact that this is still a game. Despite the fact that this economic system helps convey what sort of world the player characters are living in, I have a feeling that making 5gp = 1lb in most scenarios might make gameplay and inventory management tiresome.

For a setting that will see use in a game rather than a book, does this sort of economy hinder gameplay more than it assists verisimilitude?
>>
>>54168289
>>54168264
That just seems tedious and cumbersome. Why not come up with another idea?

For instance, to purchase property or other large investments requires a certain type of currency (your gold bar). To aquire the bar requires an immediate exchange of coins, more coins than the average peasant would handle in a lifetime, and money lenders are vicious. That way the peasants are limited but not by weight which is a little silly in the first place.

Sure.

Would making video games in a fantasy setting be as impossible as it sounds? Illusion magic and enchanting objects aren't anything exactly revolutionary ideas but I hardly ever see them mixed outside making some/something look better, worse, or different than normal. It seems to me that if a wizard or mage or whatever knew what he was doing he could make things like basic holographic handhelds, VR goggles, or even dual decks like in Yu-Gi-Oh.

That depends. Is magic compatible with technology in this setting, what are the effects of repeated or long term exposure to spells, etc. There's no reason it couldn't work if you were writing something and you wanted it to. I can't think of any good examples off the top of my head though, other than maybe Star Ocean 3, sort of.

I once crafted a setting with quite a heavy emphasis on magic based technology wherein there's a portable gaming device that lets folks play around in an AR/VR swords and sorcery setting. Very popular in one of the larger cities. The most popular game is a colorful RPG-like world partially constructed in VR and partially constructed using pieces of the urban environment.

It wasn't super important to what was going on, just a thing that happened to exist in that setting. It allows kids and average people live the life of a heroic adventurer without training or studying for years and then going out and actually fighting monsters and fairies, which absolutely exist in the setting.
