Does anyone else love the idea of playing/running RPGs but actually hate doing it? I collect a shit ton of RPG books and I love to read them, but every time I play with a group (as GM or as player) I find myself frustrated because it never feels right.

Once I gave up wanting to run something specific and embraced the joy of managing and reacting to player-borne chaos, I actually managed to run a bretty good game.
Didn't go nearly as I expected, though: Began an investigative game, ended up in world war.
Was super fun, though.

Dearest /tg/,

While I've always enjoyed the 'aesthetic' of an herbalist: picking herbs, living in a little cottage with drying racks of plants, grinding up poultices, and being seen as a plant-based primitive pharmacist....

How actually 'good' is herbalism at healing or curing people? What kind of track record did herbalism actually have, both now and historically?
For that matter: How good is herbalism in YOUR current setting? You a fan of herbalism /tg/?

Its main uses were in preventing inflammation and fever, disinfecting wounds, and making contraception. There are some other niche concoctions out there, but those are the three pillars of effective herbalism.

I play Barbarians of Lemuria, so herbalists can be nearly miraculous with the right ingredients.
>>
>>54235713
Herbalism worldwide has a good track record at brewing anestetics, recreational drugs, detoxifiying drugs and drugs meant to help the body recover from fatigue or support the body while it's weakened by an illness.

The other main use of herbalism was poison brewing.
>>
>>54236007
You're forgetting that most poisons had utility in small doses. Nightshade for example is good for all sorts of things in really small amounts.

Hey guys, I want to get into 40k but don't know what I want to play, can you help?

I often like to play good guys(light worn-out Yu-Gi-Oh/ white- magic/ paladins- dnd). What would be a cool army to play? Adeptus custodius looks cool. I also thought about grey knights...

There are no good guys in 40k. Only war. Grey Knights kill everyone who has seen them. So definitely not good guys. The only good guys are the orks maybe.

>DM says no
>"Why?"
>"There's too many setting assumptions that need to be made."
>"Hey DM can I be a drow?"
>"Sure that's reasonable."

So... why is it easy to imagine any given setting has a race of spider worshipping matriarchal elves in blackface with darkness powers, hand crossbows and spiked chains who live underground but the concept of an ancient society building a living construct and finding one semi-functional then repairing it is insane and "assumes too much"?

because the setting probably has elves already and evil elves who live in caves is not a stretch, while you're asking him to invent a superadvanced ancient civilization who built magic sentient robots with artifical souls, maybe it's just not something that fits his vision of the world.

maybe you should be having this discussion with your DM and not us because it's really his call.

Posting a question I had in another thread

I'm working on an Iron Warriors army and I'm wondering how I'd go about correctly carving the eye sockets in pic related to be rounder. What tool would you recommend to round them and not fuck it up?
>>
>>54233966
why not just pick a small enough drill bit? after you do the hole big enough for your needs just cut corners with a scalpel and round them with the drill a bit or the knife you said earlier based on your preference.
>>
>>54234246
Oh damn, didn't think of that. Thanks anon, I'll give it a try!

Cool thread, bro.
>>

40k has some nice background and miniatures, but has also lots of faulty things in both regards and the rules have always been a messy, unbalanced clusterfuck. Also, mostly cancerous community.

Fantasy had some nice background and miniatures, although its latest years of releases have been shit, and the rules have always been a messy, unbalanced clusterfuck. Also, mostly cancerous community.

Age of Sigmar has some nice miniatures, others that are utter shit, the laziest and shallowest background of the three, and a joke of a ruleset. Community is less cancerous than the previous two as long as you don't criticize their precious rules/minis, otherwise they go apeshit with their 'salty grognard' meme.

>realize that you designed it so well that you have no fucking idea on how they are going to solve it
>hope that the players are more clever than you in coming up with a solution
has this happened to anyone else?
26 posts and 2 images submitted.

The first part yes

The second part no, because presenting an unsolvable situation to your players is shitty GMing.

You should have a few potential solutions in mind, plus be open to the players surprising you with their own solution.

it is happening to me with a session I have tomorrow, let me tell you

>Not!D&D homebrew game
>party is infiltrating the castle of a bad lich guy (more grey than evil, the party characters are assholes)
>one of the encounters is another party of adventures waiting inside
>these guys are there because one of them is a vampire who has the lich as his master and they are also getting paid a fuckton
the problem is that my playes are the kind who would, no doubt, try to use diplomacy on this other party and I would love to save them the encounter if they find a good way to convince the other party, but no matter what I can't think of a way they would have to convince the adventurers not to fight

No. There's tons of way you could make them be on neutral or even good terms.

>All in all, if we add the Invocations to the rest of the cards in the set, we have a total expected value of $72, which is far below the norm (if you drop the 15% deduction because you aren't planning on selling any of the cards, the value increases to $82.80, which is still quite low). Generally speaking, over the past few years, a low-EV set has had an expected value of between $85 and $90, an average set between $90 and $100, and a great set in the range of $110 or even $120. This means Hour of Devastation is off-the-charts low—the lowest we've seen since Dragons of Tarkir.

>>
>>54231939
It's just a mess. Take the worst parts of 3.x and modern narrative games and you got 2d20. It's crunchy in all the wrong places, clunky in play and focuses on metamanaging diverse pools of story points.
And this is just from reading the Conan quickstart and playing MC. I don't want to think about the full version.
