Aliens

Specifically a centaur alien appears after his ship crash lands. He offers them the ability to shapeshift in exchange for their service in a war against another race of aliens, these ones being parasitic slugs that are slowly taking over the world.

The real problem is lacking draft animals entirely. As long as you still have cattle that's taken care of, oxen are entirely suitable as a replacement for draft horses. Donkeys are a fairly close replacement as well, some breeds get quite large. It's possible that with sufficient breeding for it you could do the same with goats, although they'd look weird to us.

As long as you have something along those lines, they'll probably be pressed into as many roles horses fill as possible, whether that's riding, pulling chariots/carts, whatever. And they might not be quite as good, but they'll still likely be 'good enough'.

The cultures who lacked any domestic animals larger than dogs generally didn't progress as far, because the use of draft animals just so dramatically magnifies what a population of a given size can do.

On the other hand, assuming they figured out ways to create advanced civilization without draft animals (see Aztecs), they'd be back close to what we think of as standard human progression once steam engines, or anything similar, are created. We used massive amounts of horses/mules for centuries, especially during the industrial revolution, but the numbers fell sharply after the steam engine was introduced and nearly disappeared with the gasoline engine.

Your description also isn't actually giving us much to work with outside of magic crystals and number of kingdoms. That is really hard to work with. "Magic punk esque era" is also very, very uninformative.

What kind of cultures do you draw inspiration from? What historical eras, what kind of landscapes, cultures to draw on? How do metaphysics work? Are gods actual presence in your setting or are they more of an abstract notion: do they get involved or not? Are there monsters? Undead? Non-human races?

Rate my idea for a Changeling PC.

A noble but arrogant professor of history with a love of medieval stuff and fantasy stories, who is admired his students and colleagues but has many troubles with his family. He was taken in by his Keeper by the promise to experience a world just like the ones he so dearly imagined as a coping mechanism. But his Durance ended up being more like something out of Dark Souls than any classic chivalric tale, for the Keeper delighted in breaking spirits to see what people are truly made of and believe in. The professor was turned into a Soldier, and earned his Ogre Seeming by casting away all pretence of escapism and elitism, and beating his dragon Keeper in an epic duel. Now he serves the Summer Court and wants to invent his own version of the chivalric tale to go down in history.

Would any kind anons here happen to have the Demon Translation Guide? It's not in any of the troves and I need those sweet Demon Form options for my game.

If we're talking fantasy - each city state has patron deity that's bound to the region.
Pseudo realistic - baronies and local noble houses holding power. Alternatively - large scale government formally exists but doesn't really do anything.
Near future / alt present - corporate cities.

Each city has become the dominant power, with lord mayors as absolute rulers - until you get too far away and the farms give way to wilderness.

Well what makes citystates pop up and flourish is easy access to local resources and privacy or having a large empire to build up townships that then collapsed so work from there

I would personally make the monks into a cult of martyrs deciding that the human race were meant to doom the earth, taking it upon themselves to do the right thing and destroy every empire, giving every man and woman the choice of castration and recruitment or death, leading the human race into a decline until we all die without offspring.

Props if you also lead the players into questioning their own motives, and that maybe the monks are actually "right" in the long run.

The leader of the monks might have the power to predict devastating weapons cabable of leveling cities and mountains alike, harvesting life in the millions.

For every taken life, the monks carve a scar on themselves, to honor the person. The leader is a big burly bearded mess of scars covering his every layer of skin.

He's very sad to see such incredible and noble heroes fighting with ignorance, and tries his best to convert you, but will give you all a swift humane death if that is what it takes.

They literally wanted to have orks hold off the hive fleet. However they decided that instead of enlisting the space marines to help with the mutual defense of both worlds (if the tyranids won then they both lost) they wanted to provoke orks. Then claim that humans were the unpredictable violent destructive assholes.

After that didn't work they tried to blow up the nearby hiveworld in some kind of attempt to starve it of biomass. Whilst typhon nearby was a literal jungle planet. Their plan was retarded, but what can you expect from anyone comeing from Ulthwe? Humanity could've quickly mobilized to fight the tyranids, and do exactly what they needed. However Eldar are far too retarded, and prideful to see they almost fucked everyone over.

I mean al of them are a special kind of garbage, but I gotta give it up for my boy Tzeentch. At least he wants people to have hope and strive for change in their lives, those are some real nice positives...even if it's still all part of his wacky plan to turn everyone's genitals into dust or whatever.
