How high or low fantasy is too high or low fantasy for you?

>How high or low fantasy is too high or low fantasy for you?
Medieval society better be built on the ruins of ANCIENT TECHNOLOGICAL CIVILIZATION or feature a crashed spaceship somewhere or I walk.
>>54306352
Banning Lore Wizard is too low fantasy
>>54306425
Aka the Ancient Aliens effect
Are your settings a plane?
Are they a flat world? Or one like ours?
What is the best for settings?
>What is the best for settings?
One of my settings is a flat world, though its not just a disc floating in space: it's the flat top of a huge mountain. The sun and moon orbit it by passing through a huge tunnel within the mountain. The setting's equivelant of the Underdark are tunnels filling the mountain, and at the root of the mountain is Hell.

>Enchanted book of books
The books in that book are full of hooch and spaghetti.

Every Bonisagus in scrying range just squealed in delight at a frequency that has never before been emitted by wizardkind.

Why was it so fucking good?

Is the only fantasy Ecumenopolis to be successful and believable enoughbut Rakdos, Gruul, & Dimir are wastes of resources and need to be purged from society

>Defined color pairings their their mentality, creating mechanics that could be unique to each pair.
>Had an all around solid story and a lot of good world building.
>Guilds were a fresh take on things we'd seen before.
>The first time Wizards really spent effort on enemy color combinations.
>Before neo-walkers.
>Before NWO, so we still got interesting keywords and shit that didn't have to deal almost exclusively with creatures.
We'll never have another set like Ravnica or Time Spiral again.

Best waifus by a mile.
So the recent "oriental Imperium" thread got me thinking: every once in a while /tg/ tries reversing the knobs on one aspect of W40K to see what new setting would come out of it, and that's usually funny. But what if you tried to make a roughly unrelated setting out of INDIVIDUALLY reversing as many of the knobs on each of the W40K setting elements? Like, instead of taking the whole package and going "like baseline, but intended for women", or "like baseline, but noblebright", just reverse each element by itself then put together back again? Since the major themes would each be reversed, the end result should (...I think, this is kind of confusing to me now that I try to put it in words) be pretty distinct.
I'm not sure I'm explaining this right. Here are a few ideas that came to mind:
>(inspired by that thread) a major human faction inspired by a deliberately cartoonish, insane combination of the worst elements of fundamental Islam, Chinese communism, and the decadence of tsarist Russia, with supersoldiers dressed like kung-fu samurai who explode on death
>Instead of a race based on taking all the fantasy stereotypes of elves and clumsily displacing them into space, one that's based on all the stereotypes of fantasy giants (or trolls, or something. Dwarfs are kind of overdone in that sense)
>Instead of a communist dystopia, a race that's an exaggerated parody of rampant corporate capitalism. Kinda like the Ferengi, but less Jewish and more Cyberpunk 2020
>Instead of being based on a British soccer hooligan stereotype so over-the-top it crosses the line back from actually being offensive, a race based on a completely overblown hyperbole of Southern redneck/Texas farmhands (it even has an obsession with bikes, trucks, colors, and firearms and an incomprehensibly thick accent built in).
Get the general idea? Anything alike?
This will crush like an asteroid, but I must say I do want to see how exactly it does that. Call this a cautiously respectful bump.
>>54300176
I don't know if that's "reversing" the knobs so much as applying a slightly different subject for the same idea.
You're just taking:
>faction based on religious extremists
>space race ported from fantasy
>race based on economic extremists
and
>race based on white trash
and slightly changing what they're based on. I don't think that's reversal at all.
>>54302540
I don't think OP himself knows what he's doing. I suspect he was either drunk, high, or both. That said, as a trashy science fiction universe some of the ideas have potential. I like the one with the giants, it makes me think of the aesthetic of the Thor movies. It was the one good thing about them.
Roleplaying Games is basically D&D 5E + Pathfinder... and that's pretty much the entire sector.
What game would you like to see dominate the market the way these two giants do?
>>54299992
FATAL
>>54299992
Keep in mind that the results, like those on Roll20, are going to be innately skewed. D&D and Pathfinder are some of the only games that actually require an online tabletop and grid, so other games are going to be underrepresented on those platforms as they simply don't require the features they provide.
D&D and its ephemera is still by far the largest part of the roleplaying industry, but last sales figures I checked had it at about 2/3s of all sales. Still a majority, but actually less market share than it had once upon a time. Indie RPG's seem to be growing faster than D&D is, so we might eventually see an end to D&D's dominance over the hobby.
As for what I'd have dominate in their place, I'd honestly prefer not to have a single dominant product over everything. If it had to be D&D, though, it'd be nice if other games could start learning lessons from how 4e formatted and laid out its books. I don't care for the game, but in terms of presentation and clarity it's one of the greatest ever made.
>>54300043
PF yes, but D&D5 doesn't require a grid and minis. In fact it intentionally turned away from the very structured minis+grid gameplay of 4E. So this isn't really a critique.
Also, 4E had the worst graphic design and layout of any RPG I have seen that wasn't some single-author indie. Whenever I bought the books I was appalled at how bad they looked on the inside.
>"Excuse me", says the rogue, right before he backstabs an enemy.
How do you discourage players from making shitty IC comments that just detract from the tone?
In that situation I'd say
>"you alerted him to your presence. His startled jump caused your attack to hit a less vital point. He turns, ready to attack."
>>54298515
Oh Jesus it's not that bad. The bigger problem is on your end.
You mean how to discourage people from having fun?
Just only play with edgy grimdark weebs or emo's I guess.
I have seen a specimen that seems to be related to the Rumar. But on to other matters how are you Ambassadors?
>>54291591
I find that both insulting and funny, what are they, and can i have one

They are a species of Earth ocean predators known as "sharks". They are well known for their ferocity and bite and have been denizens of Earth for millions of years.

What are some of the best way to get your campaign started?
>get mugged and you fall unconscious
>you wake up at a nearby tavern without your equipment and items
-Fate...you all somehow...someway...all meet here at this very moment...
- or my personal favorite, races..everyone has to be either human. Or elf.or walruss, or something. and your all from the same city/town who are good samaritans and want to help...or something.
>>54291488
Start by doing a 1 on 1 roleplay to get each pc to the deaired start point, then have them all meet there.
>>54291488
You've ended up at an attorney's office having been informed that their deceased client left you something in their will. Having had nothing better to do at the time, or being on the lookout for free cash/stuff like a true scavenger (adventurer), you decided to go along to the reading, only to be forced to mix with an ill-favoured assortment of degenerates and ne'er-do-wells (rest of party).
The inheritance is conditional on the assorted group performing some task..
Could I get some character art for cops here?
Ideally with the sort of hateful and broken thousand yard stare you would pick up serving on SWAT for 10 years in the World if Darkness
>the game takes place in the zombie apocalypse
>>54283082
>the game is contemporary fantasy and not WoD
>>54283082
Why do people who don't have a gaming group think anyone cares about their opinions?
Then find another one?
Is Westeros a good setting?
>>54283000
I actually think it's a great setting, though this was only after reading "A World of Ice and Fire."
>>54283000
It's reasonably well built. Everything is unique enough to be interesting but familiar enough to be accessible. There's a good amount of depth to most regions between the histories of the houses, but you're not going to gimp yourself by not having it memorized.
>>54283023
Yeah, pretty damn good.
The biggest strike against it will be if GRRM never finishes the series.
Take the blank map and draw some borders on it, make up some countries. Doesn't have to have any bearing on real world borders, just get claiming land, bonus points for interesting shit.
Probably belongs in /qst/, but I'll offer you a first.
>>54255798
Easy, what next?
>>54255798
You can't really make realistic borders without knowing the topography.

I would like to request a cheerful Kobold Princess (silver/blue scales, fancy dress, tiara with a sapphire in it) with a pair of Dragonborn bodyguards (both knights, so fully armored and carrying war banners, scales are a slightly duller silver than the princess's.). Her guards stand about three times her height.
The insignia on the banner is a stylized silver dragon coiled around a large diamond, wings spread.

Requesting my Tiefling Gunslinger/Alchemist.
Everything you need should be in the ref other than the sheathed sword and the gun in its holster around his belt, as well as a few vials sticking out of it as well
Good morning and welcome back!
Questions about triggered abilities:
Came up in a recent EDH game-
It's my opponent's turn (going into his upkeep) I have Sheoldred, Whispering One in play and my opponent has his General out and an Awakening Zone (no other creatures). My assumption is that all of our upkeep triggers go on the stack in player turn order (mine after his) and resolve in reverse order as the stack usually does. This would result in him sacrificing his general before he can make his Awakening Zone token.
Is this correct? Also apparently Generals can't be put into libraries anymore? Why do you ruin everything you touch, Wizards?
>>54248596
In other words- active players don't control in what order ALL triggered abilities are put on the stack, only their own a la Bridge From Below/Smokestack.
>>54248596
Yeah, triggers are put.on the stack by the active player then by each non active player in turn order each one stacking his triggers as he sees fit.
Awakening zone will nit save his commander.
Also for once that's not wizards fuckery but the Commander Commity.
