What went wrong?
The mechanics don't match the fluff. A single Space Marine squad is enough to suppress a planetary rebellion, but on the tabletop a a squad of Chaos cultists trumps them.
>>54329990
Wait, when is that stated? As in *literally* fight off the whole planet, or their symbolic presence is enough to make a planet think twice about fucking with the Imperium?
The second one I can buy, particularly as in-universe boasting. The first makes no goddamn sense, unless the idea is that they could fight their way to a doomsday weapon and glass the planet.
If this is about that bit in the Iron Warrior's background, I thought that was an example of how utterly fucked the Iron Warriors were getting. They were being given assignments that were literally impossible, and told to grin and bear it while everyone else got the glory.
>>54329957
There were a campy army (and not in a good way) that did not fit with the rest of the setting.
The squat page on 1d4chan has an interview on this very subject.
First of all, Squats were *not* dropped because they were not selling well. There were then, and are now, plenty of other figure ranges that sell in the sort of % quantities that the Squats pulled down, especially when you look across all of the ranges produced by GW rather than just those for 40K.
No, the reason that the Squats were dropped was because the creatives in the Studio (people like me, Rick, Andy C, Gav etc) felt that we had failed to do the Dwarf 'archetype' justice in its 40K incarnation. From the name of the race (Squats - what *were* we thinking?!?!) through to the short bikers motif, we had managed to turn what was a proud and noble race in Warhammer and the other literary forms where the archetype exists, into a joke race in 40K.
>With hindsight, we should have dropped the Squats back then, and saved ourselves a lot of grief later on.
They pretty much a combonation of worse orks, worse guard and worse spess mheennss and did not have a reasonable explaination for why they exist as an independent faction.
ITT we summarize our last gaming session while making it sound as absurd or misleading as possible.
I'll start.
>A elite team of heroes tasked with saving the world from darkness postpone their quest for later so they can do police raids. They end up attacking/arsoning a storehouse where zombie fish are due to be processed into LSD, beat up/arrest an interracial gay couple, and flee when a very grumpy lawyer shows up.
Fresh off their investigation on the war torn planet of Extermas, the acolytes return to the Inquisitors cruiser to follow up their lead. The case of the poisonous tithe shall be broken wide open.
A group of concerned citizens led by the Flash successfully get the Prince of the Realm and his entourage killed by murderous plants, but then a demon-vampire released Frankenstein's Monster into the tangle...
>To rescue the fish, the players had to sip tea with a weeaboo. Nyarlathotep's sperm was the only method of keeping in contact with one another but they managed to pull through.

I hope there are options to allow you to channel your solarian powers to do things like letting you punch stuff rather than just forming weapons out of gravity and light.

Okay, /tg/. How can I steer people away from D&D and into other systems?
Storytime
>Be GM
>Running L5R
>Post it on local RPG group
>Get response, get posted on weekly board
>The rest are D&D
>Out of seven: Five tables, all full, all running Curse of Strahd
>Got zero interest, even with blurbs and art on what L5R is about
>Try again next week, but with 7th Sea 2E (Replaced the "Story" and "Levelling" systems to make things less shit, changed a bit of the inner lore because John Wick can't write for shit.)
>Fuck-all interest, only got players who didn't get a seat in the D&D tables
>Ask around
>No-one has any interest in anything other than D&D
>mfw
All I want is to get these people into things that are neither samey nor shit.
I mean, I'd DM for D&D, but this shit is ridiculous.
>>54326571
>how do I steer people away from shitty pop 'music' and into other styles
Plebs abound, OP.
You've already asked around, found nothing but a plebby wasteland in all directions, and so you've done all you can. I guess you could keep placing ads around to try to hoover up the few non-DnD players on the scene.
>>54326571
I'm having much the same problem. Posted several ideas for groups on my college Facebook, no replies on any of them.
One guy says he's looking for 1 more player for a 5e group, 20 replies.
>>54326620
Feels like whenever I'm talking to someone about a system that's not D&D, they look at me like I'm spouting String Theory.
>"Uh, but what if I want to play a Sci-Fi game?"
>"Have you tried... [Insert rudimentary how-to-play in a system that's not 1d20]"
>"Uh... I don't want to learn that, that's not D&D..."
"it's not witty, but we'll still laugh at it" edition

What do you think about vancian magic?
>>54325163
glad it's dead
>>54325163
I don't. You shouldn't either man. It's better that way.
It's just a more logical version of traditional magic
Fuck if I know - Personally, I like counting successes, like Exalted or Shadowrun.
Nat 20
Exploding dice
It's 3d6 you punks
What's your favorite magic system?
Toss up between GURPS Thaumatology: Ritual Path Magic or GURPS Sorcery. Path/Book magic isn't bad either, especially when coupled with madness/corruption.
Rune system of Glorantha is neat, but kind of terrible in RQ. It's better used, mechanically and thematically, in HQ2.
I have nothing against vancian casting or anything, it's just far from being a favorite.
ORE/Reign has a pretty interesting magic system style too, as does Burning Wheel, but they don't make my top 5.
BRP and D6 magic is generally shit IMO.
>>54323670
jesus I haven't played armello in awhile, what is this awesome black magic ferret.
Mage the Ascension/Awakening's magic system hands down. I love bending the universe to my will and making up new effects on the fly.
They got millions of years of advanced technology and their idea of an armored fighting vehicle is a retarded little brother of Jabba the Hutt's Pleasure Barge using a rudder to steer, everyone out in the open and manually aimed guns.
they raid
>armored
>fighting
DE are not about any of that
>>54322731
>civilian vehicles with guns
>double as troop transports
>used by lowlife criminals
>mainly for quick raids
Does anyone here play PTU? It's Pokemon Tabletop United. It's a Pokemon tabletop game with lots of options for building trainers and pokemon. So far, I've been playing it with a DM and another guy, and it's pretty fun. Immune to Smogonshit, so nearly every Pokemon is viable.
I don't ever see it mentioned here, so I guess this is a PTU thread. Tell stories and ask questions, I'll be hanging around for a bit.
>>54318608
I tried a game of PTU once. All the options seemed fun and rad, but the actual gameplay of it I found to be very slow, clunky, and hard to remember. It also didn't help the GM was a cunt who got furious anytime someone asked for rules help.
>>54318950
Yeah, I confess, the multitude of options also necessitates a lot of rules (which are, with certain abilities, then modified or broken outright) that can be hard to keep track of. I think this game really lends itself to online play rather than physical for that reason, because there are tools that can be used to make things happen much faster. My DM recently discovered a Pokemon generation tool for use with PTU and it's made things WAY easier.
My experience with it was that combat was very slow due to everyone having both their character and their pokemon on the field at once.
How would you explain to a new DM that a setting document is for the benefit of the players not him? That I'm the one who needs to know what to expect, how to respond, what tools are available to me. That just because he can improv and make it up on the spot is not good enough.
Do you even agree with that sentiment?
>>54318505
I think we need a bit more context. As opposed to what?
>>54318523
Not OP, but I'm guessing a way to show off his writing/worldbuilding and filling the players heads with irrelevant minutiae, which seems to be why most DMs in actuality write setting documents.
>>54318523
As opposed to being told almost nothing. He gave us two country names and said it was farmland.
What's the appeal of playing a Dwarf? Why people love drunken bearded manlets so much?
Because dwarfs are perceived to be the complete opposite of elves. So the desire to play one isn't motivated so much by the desire to be a dwarf, but to play something "anti elf" for whatever reason.
>>54318067
Because they're the idealized version of neckbeards to neckbeards. They're short, gruff, hostile to outsiders and love to drink. They also make things and love metal, which is shiny and industry and neckbeards love industry.
>>54318123
But Orcs are the actual anti-elves.
Dwarves are just small hairy mountain elves. They're just as arrogant, over-skilled, supernaturally tough and badass and highly cultured and noble and good at making magic items and at ancient lore and everything as elves.
