Not sure if this belongs here, but I'm looking to create a play-by-post game.

This would be the third iteration of this idea. The first was fun, but poorly thought out, so the mechanics were shit. The second was well-thought out, but there was so much math involved that, when a war broke out, the math of it, along with answering people's PMs and writing posts, took eight hours.

Years later, I want to give this a shot again. This time though, I'm automating all the complex stuff with Java.

Here's the premise:

>> Small kingdom in a high middle ages world, no magic.
>> Old king, though effective, was greedy, so vassals overthrow him.
>> One random lucky applicant will be chosen king, granting them extra land and resources. The rest will be their vassals.
>> "But anon, that's no fair, the other players will resent them!"
>> Exactly.
>> King will have to walk a fine line between running kingdom effectively, and keeping his vassals, the other players, from killing him.
>> Players can do w/e the fuck they want. There are several neighboring kingdoms nearby that make for good starting points, but the players could just as easily try to kill each other, or just fuck around and host epic noble parties.

The actual mechanics of the game are as follows, so far:

>> Start out with 1000 points.
>> These points are used to buy land, and other upgrades.
>> These points are further spent deciding how to utilize the land, from farmland, to pastures, to mines, to simply leaving it as wilderness
>> Lastly, points are spent on family members.
>> Some family members are free, having more will cost you. Not having the free members, or having members with bad traits, will give you back points.

>> Main resources are crops, cattle, metal, and bullis (short for bullions).
>> 1 acre of farmland produces 3 crops. 3 crops are consumed per person in your land, so you need 4 acres per person.
>> Max amount of land 1 pop can work is 30 acres, so population size should only become a problem if you're raising a lot of people to fight.
>> Mines require minimum amount of people to work as well, though haven't decided yet how many that should be.
>> 1 mine produces enough metal to arm 500 basic spearmen, or pay for the upkeep of 1000 for a year. They are appropriately expensive in points.
>> Lastly, cattle. Valuable, being worth 15 crops, but requires pastures to be fed. Otherwise, need to be fed with crops. On paper, more efficient than farmland, but can be stolen, and replenish at a small rate of 1% each year.

>> Land can be parsed out to knights.
>> This land does not directly provide you anything, except a skilled heavy horseman who is always ready to fight (more on that in a sec).

>> Combat works as follows.
>> You start out with half the amount of the metal you produce each year to be spent on your initial weapons stockpile.
>> To get your army, simply call up your peasants, and arm them with your stockpile. Feeling cheap? They come with their own shitty armor and billhooks if you don't provide them with anything.
>> Have knights? Congrats! These guys start out at Skill 1 (as opposed to your peasant levies, who start at Skill 0).
>> Troops gain experience through battle. Knights continuously gain experience, since they're always training.

>> Battle is simple. I go to random.org, and put in the highest number a unit's stats allow them. Troops start out with a base of 20. This is the percentage of their unit size that scores a casualty against the enemy.

>> If enemy sustains a certain amount of casualties, morale is rolled for in a similar fashion. Roll under the max number, and you're good. Experienced units are obviously less likely to run.

There are a lot more details to this game that still need to be worked out (supply lines, raiding/pillaging, taxation, using money to buy from foreign merchants, etc.).

Is this project to ambitious/autistic? Because I'm trying to make this game a relatively realistic simulation of what being a medieval lord is like, but doing so is a complicated affair. It doesn't help that so far, the people I've asked about it love to give "advice" (new features they think would be cool) without giving any solid reasons for how the mechanics should work.
>>
I had a similar experience, down to trying automation on the third try

Best advice I can give is start small, test often

Following a meteorite collision in the Arizona desert in late 1879, a new element is discovered in the crater left behind: Element Zero.

Element Zero allows for the use of Mass Effects by late 19th century humanity. Assuming that there are no alien races nor Reapers lurking in the black, what happens to earth now?
20 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
I think there are some intermediate parts that are missing here. Element zero enables faster than light travel, but they would still need to get into space and have reasons to discover these properties of element zero.

I mean, rather than a meteorite collision, why not have a ship crash that could be reverse engineered or something.
>>
>>54449958
That would also be a good idea. I originally thought to remove all alien references, but I suppose a Reaper falling out of the sky would be cool.
>>
>>54449958
FTL isn't all that the mass effect does though, it's catch-all for mass alteration or cancellation.

A lot of what happens would depend on how much ezo there is and how much would be used up just for experimentation. Developing mass effect based technology that early would change the face of the Earth undeniably, but only for as long as the ezo doesn't run out.

What would be some good privileges for nobles?

I have a party of level 4-5 PCs spending some time in a tiny backwater village where absolutely no one else is higher than 1st level and where all local threats are of this equivalent scope, i.e. a few goblins or scruffy bandits or shit. The player characters either haven't realized that they're infinitely superior to everyone else hanging around, or more likely, they just don't care.

What manner of shenanigans, difficulties, hooks, and roleplaying opportunities might arise from this discrepancy?

You could have a serial killer mystery where you set everything up to be a confrontation with a werewolf.

Only for it to turn out to be a really pissed off house cat.

I'm honestly surprised that Commoners survive to adulthood being so fragile.

I mean, a first level mage can huck a stone from the ground at them and outright kill one on a good roll.
>>
>>54447293
A single well-aimed rock in the head can easily knock you unconscious, which is really what dropping to 0 hp means. Even causing internal bleeding in the brain that leads to death - if the target is frail or you strong, or if you crit, causing you to bring them straight to negatives - is more than plausible.

Yes, humans are pretty fragile.
>>
>>54447761

Do you think the humans are so fragile because it makes the more brutish races appear tougher, or because it means that every village the PCs enter is one step-away from becoming a hilarious rube-Goldberg machine of death and destruction?

I would play the hell out of that. Metroid is one of if not my favourite game series.

Only problem would having to change it to fit multiple people and what system to use.
>>
>>54447635
>having to change it to fit multiple people
Good thing based Nintendo already did it with this best-seller
>>
>>54447635
You'd have to play as some independent or Fed-aligned force. No sole bounty hunters here.

As for system, it would depend on the tone. For all we've seen, the Metroid universe is pretty dark if you're not Samus.
So if you want it stylized, you could try modifying the 40k RPGs. A bunch of rules for power armours, weapon systems and stuff already exist in one form or another. Only War would work for Federation troopers, Dark Heresy for more independent/investigatory folks. Imagine running into some Chozo ruins and being sent there by the Feds as an archaeological survey team.

If you want less stylized or just dislike the 40k system, you could use RuneQuest 6/Mythras. With the Firearms addon and a bit of homebrewing, you could make pretty much anything, Metroid being no exception.

If you want as simulationist and gritty as you can, there's the obligatory GURPS suggestion.

Pandemic is a shit game on the whole and legacy elements don't improve an already shit game.
>>
>>54442969

Kind of fiddly, but on the whole it is better than the sum of its parts.

People seem to be focused on spoilers and shit for it which is pretty stupid, the story is pretty trivial and the bulk of the game is tactical combat using cross table talk and hand management.

Fun game, but get an insert for it or else the set up will take too much time to keep it out on the table. Without a set-up like Meeple Realty or Broken Token offering (or even making your own with foam or something) you are looking at about 20-30 minutes to set things up with all the bits and bobs.

With an insert it drops down to under ten minutes for a tear down of an old mission and set-up of a new mission allowing for multiple game sessions a night without much stress or hassel for a good game. It really takes a game that is a once in a while thing because of set-up chore to no problem to gaming routinely.

I think the Meeple Realty one is better, personally because the bits and bobs are better organized and there is a cover for all the stuff so it can be stored horizontally on a shelf and stay together.

He's propably estimating how much tribute a town of this size can give. He'll take into account the number of ships, the shops and any big landmarks, like those stadiums bringing in money.

And though he will never admit it, he'll take care not to ask for too much tribute. Otherwise a city of this size will find a way to fuck him up. Either by hiring adventurers or fielding a proper army against him. He knows that even unarmed peasants will infest his roost like ants if he pushes them too far.
