We're studying literature, and we're at that annoying point where we've been told to make something creative inspired by a work we've read. We've spent some time going over the themes of Don Quijote de la Mancha, and I had the idea of making my creative work a short, very simple roleplaying game. The idea is to unwittingly put the person experiencing the "work" (i.e. playing the game) into Don Quijote's mindset of absorption into fantasy, showing people that as easy as it might be to make fun of a sad old Spanish coot riding around pretending to be a knight, all you need to do is coat the fantasies with something like "a roleplaying game" or "an artistic experience" and suddenly it's all socially acceptable.
Now, I'm not going to ask /tg/ to do my homework for me, but I do want your advice on matters of mechanics. I want the system to be very simple, but also very intuitive to people who may have never even heard about the concept of roleplaying games in their lives. This is why I can't use something like Fate or a highly narrative system - while they might sound simple to US, the ideas they present are not really intuitive to a complete landlubber, so to speak. Conversely, more complicated mechanics would be exactly that.
Ideally, the system should be simple enough someone with no experience at all could create a character and go through an "adventure" (preferably one themed around fantastic ideas of knighthood) in about an hour, but robust and flexible enough that it wouldn't lose all its appeal after one play.
Thoughts?
>>43543479
You could base it off Everybody is John.
>>43544253
Isn't that kind of avant garde, though? I'm looking for something really intuitive.

Welcome to Academy City. The time is morning, the weather is drizzly, and the date is January 27.
You are Kyril Torikov, Level 3 telekinetic ‘superhero’ and you had not seen this coming. Yesterday you had been tasked with assassinating a Russian Code M political dissident. The kill had been confirmed even. Their body had been practically sawn in two from the passage of several anti-materiel rounds. Autopsy had put their death at near instantaneously. So you were surprised when you checked in for work the next day to find them contacting Academy City for a bodyguard. No one had expected that they would have a body double, nor that they would be an actual ambassador for the Russians. Someone had played you.
Nayuta had sat down with you to discuss the matter. Aside from the issue of leaks, you were now faced with a problem. The Russian envoy was definitely Code M. Letting them get in contact with even a minor authority in the City was simply asking for trouble. They would definitely be on guard against further attempts given their body double had been killed. On top of that, this was a meeting to begin peace talks between Russia and the City. This was important, as amongst the Crusader states, Russia and its satellite states comprised a full third of frontline combatants on their own. This rested on the assumption that their offers were genuine. With their envoy, no one could be sure. That was why the City had dumped the responsibility on your lap.
It was up to you to decide whether to honestly guard the Russian envoy or to kill them and let God sort it out.
>Play along for now, guard the Russian envoy

“Who is she?”
“Her name is Baroness Ermintrude von Streucker.” Operator #5 presented the three of you a picture of Ermintrude von Streucker. “Our agents in Germany have kept close tabs on her due to her prominent position in the Thule Society and the Ahnenerbe Organisation. She’s not exactly as much of a people person as say Colonel Engelhardt was, and indeed the picture we are showing you was taken over a month ago. She hasn’t been seen since. An agent however reported that the Nazi inner circle is fasttracking her to lead a new replacement for the Magisch Korps.”
“What sort?” you ask.
“We don’t know yet. Perhaps a retread of the Wundersoldaten project however. That is our most likely lead, as it was one of Hitler’s most preferred Wunderwaffe projects.” Operator #5 leans back in his seat, his face still framed and masked in shadow. “We are informing you now of this because as our agents report, she may not in fact be a Magical Girl. However she may be in touch with the magic of the world in a way that we haven’t discovered.”
“So you want us to take her out then?” Sumire asks very loudly and candidly. You and Rana look at her, a little surprised by her sudden bloodthirst. Then again, von Streucker is just a Nazi after all.

“No. I already have agents tracking her movements, what little they are. She isn’t vulnerable to assassination just yet, but if she is, I’ll know who to call.” You roll your eyes, crossing your arms. You hate assassination. “As for the former Magisch Korps, we still have not yet heard word from them regarding where they may be as if yet. Their trespass on Australia combined with ‘horrific violations of human liberties’ have given them few allies. We have to assume that they may have retreated underground and may strike when we least expect them to.”
“And the Atlas?” asks Rana.
“Already in safe hands. Doctor Savage and company are beginning examinations on what makes the Atlas tick, and if we may reverse engineer it.” Reverse engineer it? They really want something that powerful in their own hands. You figure that the reason you could use it was because you were a Magical Girl. How exactly would the world look if the Atlas could be used by ordinary people. “Liberty, you do not seem to agree, do you?”

Hello. I am The Gamemaster. And I've brought another game for you, the readers, to play. To begin, I'll need someone named "The Player". It is highly recommended to also have a tripcode so you can be distinguishable from everyone else.

The wind in your hair, the speed of the Tokyo streets you cruised in your Audi R8. They all hit you like a brick as you take a corner at a neck breaking speed of 180 KM/H. cops chasing your tail as strange shouts oblige you to pull over.
As you look back in your rearview mirror, about 3 cop cars try to weave in between the traffic to hopelessly try to catch you, sirens blasting like some sort of impromptu orchestra, desperate to accompany the roar of your engine.
As you look towards the beautiful neon lights that shower the Tokyo skylines an almost 90 degree curve appears in front of you, clearly a rational person would slow down and stop the adrenaline rush.
Thank god normality isn't as fast as an Audi R8. Especially when its hitting 240 KM/H
>you open yourself to the opposite side of the curve and like a proper race car driver, hit the brake pedal, g-force hitting you like a gunshot as you take the curve, tears escaping from your eyes due to the force. after recovering from the G-force you hit the gas even harder and go on twards your way
>You pull the handbrake like a proper maniac, making the car start to lose control, yet with the finesse of an artisan you make the rear end point towards the outside of the curve as the front of the Audi gently kisses the wall in front of it. With a surgeon's precision you move the steering wheel, making the car straighten itself up towards your goal
>You see the large van about to make the turn, your monstrous side takes the best of you and makes a handbrake turn, its left side heading towards the van, with a massive crash the van topples over as you pick up speed, The van managed to turn your car in the best direction to go and with some leftover speed you press the gas and bolt forward once again

The cop cars try to keep up with you but there's no avail, just as you head for the final straight, a Mercedes Benz SLR appears in front of you, it's silver painting reflecting the headlights of your Audi. it's speed already at the maximum, it is by this moment that you realize the person driving the SLR must be in the same racetrack as you.
shifting the Audi into its last gear you press the pedal one more time. unfortunately the driver in front of you makes his best effort to stay on the road
>With a steady hand, you position the car behind the SLR and wait for the best moment to strike
>you pull out a handmade dashboard, foreign to the car itself and press a blue button that makes the Audi pick up an insane pace
>you position your car towards the lower right part of the SLR and with terrible bloodlust perform a police takedown

Ballad 0.5
Song of Swords is a realistic fantasy tabletop RPG that draws inspiration from historical fechtbuchs, weapons and armor. Its combat system is fun as balls and it can be used for both fantasy and historical/mundane settings.
Call of the Void is a pulpy sci-fi tabletop RPG about fighting space-nazis and hunting giant whales with harpoons made out of the moon. Ironically it also has a very realistic combat system based around modern firefights, and can handle mundane or magical settings.
Here's a .rar archive with the newest version of the rules as well as all related current working documents: http://www.mediafire.com/download/12xqm1p2q69m392/Song_of_Swords.rar

Here's a wiki detailing SoS's fantasy setting, getting filled up bit by bit as Jimmy reveals more details. Its worth a look before asking for lore questions in the thread: http://tattered-realms.wikia.com/wiki/Tattered_Realms_Wiki
There's also a roll20 room where new players are encouraged to try the rules, test new rules, and find game breaking issues: https://app.roll20.net/join/346755/hRKd4w

Kill me now.
Okay, so I need your guy's opinion and probably help with something, so here goes:
>group has armed escort by Mercs described as "thoroughly disinterested and probably underpaid"
>travel with them until night
>one of the group goes off to hunt, the mercs let them go with no fuss
>all mercs gather round the campfire while one of them cooks
>the paladin hatches a plan
>tells the others to sprinkle caltrops behind them and to wait for his signal
>the assassin does so and readies to release horses pulling the front cart
>the paladin asks who their leader is
>some confusion, there's no leader since they were meant to just escort and help the party if necessary
>after a while they point to the strongest fighter
>paladin walks up to them
>"we won't be requiring your services any longer"
>merc shrugs and turns around to walk away
>paladin slits his throat while his back is turned
>panic ensues and half the mercs try to flee
>paladin chases them down and executed them, burning two horses to death trying to hit one hiding under the rear carriage with a Molotov
>rest of the party watches in horror as the paladin kills the rest of the mercs
>the assassin manages to subdue one, to stop him from running at the paladin
>after the fight, the assassin searches the remaining carriages for medical supplies to patch up one of the mercs crippled by the paladin's hammer
>comes out of the carriage to find the paladin slitting the unconscious men's throats
>assassin loses his shit and attacks the paladin
>paladin shows no remorse, insists he's done nothing wrong
>second paladin is devastated by everything, cuts off one of his fingers as penance, eventually breaks up the fight
So, was the paladin justified? Did the assassin react rashly? What should happen to them both?
Pic tangentially related, dm's response to all of this
>>43542889
Sounds like the first paladin just flipped his shit and murdered every single one of their escort, who hadn't done anything wrong to them, as far as I can tell.
Your Paladin #1 is a That Guy, make his Paladin fall and boot him from the group.
What edition is this?
>>43542889
Is there, uh, any reason Paladin #1 decided to chimp out and kill them all? Anything that prompted it at all? Because based on what you said, he just decided to murder them all for funsies. Literally chaotic evil.
>>43542963
It's first edition, but mostly a homebrewto make it worse, the paladin is the usual dm's character, with full dragon plate jet black, etc
Hell, if the assassin found his behaviour abhorrent then chances are you've done something wrong

Sort of hard to do as the majority of them turn into railroaded TPKs.
Fishermen along the Massachusetts coast complain about freak black algae blooms destroying and contaminating their catch. A young research biologist from Miskatonic University in Arkham is dispatched to investigate. He sets up a small lab in an Innsmouth barn while going out on boats with the fishermen to gather samples. After a few weeks his reports start becoming erratic and disturbed. At the same time fishermen start to vanish and whole boats are lost or found adrift and empty.
The PCs are gathered by their old professor/friend who is the head of biology at Miskatonic. They are asked to meet the researcher at Innsmouth, assess his mental state and his work, and report back within the day by telegram. The police has begun an investigation into the researcher's doings after local opinion has turned against him. The press has gotten interested and if there is a story out there that the university was somehow involved in deaths it could devastate the funding for essential research.
That was before the Coast Guard got involved...

The tall figure gives a respectful bow to you. "I am Jiya, a member of the Galactic Patrol."
Jaco crosses his arms and shakes his head. "Agh, you still have no sense of style! I told you to practice after that poor introduction you gave to her brother!"
You frown, Acer walking up to you and mumbling "Don't ask."
The Jiya fellow simply continues after the interruption. "...in any case, that is indeed what seems to be Tuffle technology. I believe Jaco informed you about the incident with the Saibamen sample?"
"...ugh. I think I can see where this is going..." you groan.
"Another security breach was made, and whoever it was tried to take something we have on Tuffle technology. Barrier tech, to be specific." he continues.
Brobro nods. "Ghost da- ...Dr. Raichi never gave us all the details on it. We've got implanted memories on a lot of things, but what we have on those is strangely absent. He's used them several times himself. Remember sis?"
"I try not to..." you grumble. Oh you remember all right. 'No Maple, use more Ki! Break the barrier!' Ugh, you hated that part of his training. 'It's on the weakest setting! How can you not break through this?!' Ended up developing the Hallowed Rush just because you were SO sick of seeing your attacks bounce so harmlessly off it. Maple SMASH stupid barrier! Hah... man it's been forever since you've used that technique.
"In any case, there attempt was unsuccessful, but given your history, it seemed logical to try to see if something came about with this. It looks like we were correct." Jiya finishes.
>A. So why are the two of you here, and not just Jaco?
>B. Wait, you repelled them? Then how did they end up with the tech? Unless...

There's a new /his/ region for anyone who likes roughly modern era worldbuilding and strategic-level roleplay.
What is NationStates?
>NationStates is a free nation simulation game. You create your own country, fashioned after your own ideals, and care for its people. Either that or you deliberately torture them. It's really up to you.
How do I play?
>Create a nation and follow it from there. You'll be asked to choose a name for your nation, a motto, a national animal, and a currency. Then you answer a short questionnaire about your politics, which will determine whether your nation is authoritarian or libertarian, conservative or liberal, compassionate or psychotic.
The official /his/ region:
