>Trym rolled 19 and 3. His ribs crack, reducing strength by 1!
>The White Wolf rolled a 4. It is engulfed in flame and won't stop bleeding!
The White Wolf's immense size and bulk slam into you, even as you pull yourself out of the way of its teeth and out-stretched claws! The impact lifts you off your feet and the harsh, grating crack of ribs pushed too far has Elia calling out your name in panic, from his safe haven up in the tree! The breath is driven from you as you crash to the ground, your spear jolted from your hands! In an instant, the White Wolf is upon you, teeth snapping at your neck, but even with spots swimming before your eyes, you still have enough awareness to bring the burning branch you hold around and jam it into the beast's maw!
The White Wolf howls in pain and tries to back away as fire spills from its mouth and pain becomes its whole existence! You don't let it escape though, grabbing a handful of its shaggy hair with one hand and snatching your knife from your belt! Your arm comes up and down again and again, stabbing in a frenzy as you struggle to roar a battle cry! Red blood flies in arcs, scattering over the snow as your knife plunges into the wolf's throat again and again, until finally, it shudders, strength leaves its limbs and it goes limp, crashing down half on-top of you and finally dying.
>>43564818
You hear the sound of feet hitting the ground as Elia swings down from his tree and sprints over to you. Together, you heave the weighty carcass off your midsection, allowing you to breathe again and instantly give a croaking cry of pain.
"Your ribs are bad, brother," Elia says, helping you sit up.
"That's obvious," you groan bitterly. "Where's the rest of the pack?"
"They scattered when the white one ate fire and died. I've never seen anyone fight like that Trym, but you're hurt badly! What do we do? The elders are half a season away!"
>We have no choice, we'll have to turn back. At least we have a trophy.
>We'll find a place to winter and wait it out. The tribe will come to us.
>Our luck's held so far... We'll push on. These wounds aren't that bad.

I have waited for this day
Someone slipped a letter under my door inviting me to a "meta-role-playing experience".
Time and place are listed, but I don't recognize the location.
Should I go?
>>43564718
No.
Sounds like an orgy. Bring lube and leave your underwear at home.
>>43564718
You should scout out the location beforehand. If it's in a shady neighborhood you might want to skip it. If not at least you'll know how to get out of there if it gets weird.
Keep us posted!
I just realized hit points were actually damage reduction all along, just represented in a way that's more convenient for players to use.
Like I get they're an abstraction, but they're not even an *objective* abstraction. Depending on your level, 10 damage could be an instant KO, or it could barely draw blood. Higher-level characters don't get used to getting hurt more, they literally get hurt less by the same amount of damage. Otherwise they'd look like chunky pasta sauce by the time they get to triple-digit damage and still not die, which I've never seen depicted in any serious game.
The gory descriptions of wounds correspond to fractions of your maximum HP, hence 4E's bloodied status. Gygax and Arneson could've designed a game where HP barely increase with level, maybe two or three times your starting amount at most, and given everyone fractional damage reduction... but no one wants to use a calculator after every hit.
For example, if the normal number of HP for a person with your PC's stats but no experience was 13, and your PC had 6 levels in a class that grants the equivalent of 4 HP/level, then you would take 13/37 of all damage, which is not *terribly* hard but an extra step that can and should be avoided.
>>43564656
Took you long enough?
>>43564656
Yep, that's pretty much how it goes, and it's why simple HP systems are so popular.
>>43564656
>ITT: We try to make HP systems sound smart.
You can tell yourself that until it actually starts making sense to you, and it will still all come crashing down as soon as you run into fall damage or poison or any number of things that don't fit your HP apologist drivel.
The only relevant observation you can make on HP systems is generally:
>Well, yes it's retarded, but it bugs me less than having to think more would.
I am casual as fuck playing D&D 5 sometime next week, I have been asked to play as a healer, I hate clerics and Palas, but gotta heal. I initially thought of some apothecary arcanist or something but realised D&D doesnt have that.
I am defenitely not going Palas, so defaulted to cleric, what is the best way to be a human centric cleric out to push his temple's agenda and heal but turn on his companions when need be?
What abilities and advantages should I choose?
First thing you need to know about Clerics. They're not just healers. You're a holy warrior of your church, sent out to bring the light into the dark places of the earth, to fight evil wherever it may lurk. You're almost like a Paladin, but with a bit less focus on fighting and more focus on divine magic. And that magic is absolutely not limited to healing. There's buffs, utility spells, and even some useful damaging spells in there too. Not to mention that Turn Undead makes you the go to guy for dealing with a major enemy group. And in any other fight you can stand your ground too, providing frontline support with the fighter. Just keep that in mind, and you'll be smiting and cleaving with the best in no time.

Have you ever heard of Nuwa, the creator goddess of Chinese mythology?
See Pic. She is not a lamia or naga, but a primordial serpent goddess.
>After Pangu's body became the world there were plants and animals but no humans. Nuwa felt lonely, she saw her own reflection in water and decided to create more beings like herself, so she fashioned humans from clay but instead of the lower body of a snake she gave humans legs instead.
>The first human were very intelligent since they were crafted individually. But then Nuwa got bored of making human one by one so she put a rope in the water and every drops of clay that dropped became more humans. Those new human were less intelligent than the first since they were not made individually.
>Nuwa though humans all the skills they needed to survive in the world, as well as art and music, but after a while Nuwa realized that unlike herself, her children are not immortal.
>Instead of continually making new ones, Nuwa decided to make half of them male, and the other half female. Nuwa then though her children how to reproduce (try to not think too hard) and established the tradition of marriage. That’s why Nuwa is also considered as the goddess of fertility and marriage.
I really liked this myth because it felt so original. Not the human form Clay part, but the fact that it’s a giant serpent goddess that made humanity.
Almost no one I know knows about her myth. I think Nuwa’s story is really underrated,
What you guys think of Nuwa’s myth?
>>43564644
It's interesting because at least from what you've said, unlike many other creator gods there doesn't seem to be some kind of debt of gratitude or demand of worship.
Most other creator gods require or demand some form of worship or sacrifice, and impose dire consequences should the sacrifice or worship not be delivered satisfactorily.
>>43565372
Worship and sacrifice are rather antural evolutions from more primitive forms of appeasing the elements and maybe even having them work for you a little. Religion getting more organized just tends to institutionalize those things.

Waiting for this Anon to post their Christmas Deathwatch story. Now I've started to come up with a Dark Heresy story to run that's along the lines of The Grinch. Like a Nergal demon stealing all of the food from the Hive Houses or something.
How does one into human(ish) melee psyker assuming the GM isn't physically present to choke me for my bullshit?
What's your preferred starting level - or equivalent - for a campaign, and why?
Pic unrelated
Campaign of what? D&D? Necromunda? Mutants and Masterminds?
Solidly competent but with room for growth.
I find the hurr durr gritty starting as shitty mudfarmers thing untenably dull. I know some people enjoy it, but personally even in low power games, I like to play characters of significance and competence, otherwise it's just a comedy of errors as we roll from failure after failure, desperately trying to accomplish, well, anything.
Crazy event that brings *insert number of party members* unlikely people together. Am I glad my orc got that awful crit fail sense motive check roll, it involved some craziness in the bar and made the meeting of the characters more interesting than the usual meeting in the bar.

You wake up in the back of a van. It's not yours.
You right yourself, straightening your stiff back as best you can. You twist your torso left and then right, the way you saw older inmates do in the prison yard. This body is racking up more miles than ever.
Without making too much noise, you give yourself a once over and find that you haven’t sustained any physical injuries. The extensive bruising and swelling that had been irritating you all day has also receded, though it’s still a little painful to the touch. This is what your mother might have called a pequeño milagro but you’re more inclined to see it as grande. For you.
The road bumps softly beneath the wheels of the van and you watch as street lights slide by. You’re back in Hong Kong for sure. The light they cast mingles with the darkness inside the van and your eyes are drawn to the console in the front seat. It’s 4:13 A.M.
"You awake back there?"
"Yeah?"
“You were right loopy before. Glad you’re feeling better.”
You're pretty sure the british voice belongs to Lucas, despite the slight warp of sadness.

[2/3] (my bad)
“You’re probably looking for this.”
He tosses back a neatly bound stack of bills.
“It’s all there. You can count if you like. Rear passenger lights on.”
You wince as the back seat is flooded with white light. You count the bills and find that they total $4000. You’re a little confused but you thank Lucas for the windfall.
“There’s also the matter of your prize.”
“Right… my prize.”
“Obviously, you can’t have Brody’s car. But Derek has offered his truck and I’ll let you keep the Elevon if you like.”
The Elevon… that sounds familiar. You massage your left temple with three fingers and the memories begin to return, bit by bit. You remember taking a gamble and racing Derek. You remember climbing Tai Mo Shan with a caravan of street racers… a punk with green eyebrows, some douchebag kicking a girl mechanic. A curly haired brit with a jaw for bricklaying walking towards you in a magenta jacket, 100mm of tobacco and fire bouncing between his lips as he shouts:
“C’mon yank, it’s go time!”
You run to the Elevon and pull into a starting position. From there, your memories become a loose series of snapshots. Trees, rock, fields, and spotters caught in the headlights. Chaos and then a narrow victory. The jagged tip of a broken tibia, pushing through the skin beneath the knee.
>>43564307
[3/4] (my bad... again)
You clutch your own knee, half expecting to feel the protruding bone there, but find only the fabric of your pants.
“Christ,” you mutter and then lift your head towards Lucas, “Was everyone okay?”
“You don’t remember, do you?”
“Not everything, no.”
“You were halfway out of your mind by the time I made it down to the site of the accident. Practically had to wrestle you away from the Medcorp goons that Jake called in. He was the one who finally explained to me what the bloody fuck had happened.”
“Brody’s leg is pretty much shot, we all knew that as soon as we saw it. They gave him a choice to have it amputated and replaced with one of their stock prosthetics, pressed him on it just as soon as he regained consciousness really. Last I saw, his response was to spit on them as they hauled him into the blood wagon. Admirable but probably not too wise. I sort of wish he had taken the offer.”
“Why?”
“Because we’re team, dammit and Brody had us all lined up to compete next week in the big Street Prix. Without him, we have to forfeit our spot. If he had taken the fucking prosthesis, they’d just saw the leg off and he’d be good to go in three fucking days. It wouldn’t be the same but he could still race. Goddamn. Goddamn.”
SOUL CALIBUR QUEST
It has been six years since the Evil Seed was released upon the world. Most people continue to live their lives, praying that the Evil Sword and it’s corruption never reaches their home. Yet a few warriors, those that claim a powerful soul, go out and seek the sword, or it’s demonic wielder, the Azure Knight. These people do so for their own reasons, and only a small number of them live long enough to have their stories mean anything, but those that do live on in the annals of history, the fire in their soul ever burning.
You, are one of those few warriors.
> This quest is taking place in the Soul Calibur game series, beginning at just around the beginning of Soul Calibur II. The story up to this point has been the same as it has been in the games, but depending on your choices, you can radically change how the games end up.
> When decisions are being made, voting will go on for ten minutes, and whatever has the most votes will be used. If something fits, I’ll allow multiple options being used at once, but that won’t always be available.
> When fights occur, you’ll roll 1d100 along with suggestions for attacks. I will allow multiple options for this, and I’ll reward intelligent, creative solutions to problems, so try stuff out, and take risks.

> Who are you?
> The Knight. Your name is Edgar Emmerich. You were knighted at a young age after spending almost all of your life in the service of knights. Although you know how to wield an arming sword, you prefer to do your fighting with a lance, on horseback or on foot. You have been sent on a mission to find Sir Roman Hartwin, the closest thing you have to a father. What lies in your soul is integrity.
> The Pirate. Your name is Captain Alfie Howe, and you’re a pirate, no doubt about it. You captain a crew of thieving, murderous bastards aboard your ship, The Serendipitous Embrace. Or, you used to anyway. You’ve been captured, and are currently rotting away in a jail cell. You’ve also recently decided to set your sights upon the dread Captain Cervantes, and the loot he’s supposedly carrying, if he is more than just a myth, that is. You fight with a cutlass, along with whatever weapons you can find. What lies in your soul is freedom.
> The Thief. Your name is Cedric. You’ve been having a hard time of it lately, seeing as you’re old enough now that you’re not cute, and guilty rich old ladies won’t give you food. So, you’ve decided to do what any teenage orphan on the streets of Rouen would do, and turned to thievery. You are nimble, quick, and clever, enough so to get you out of multiple scrapes that would have killed any other man. Currently, you’re planning to rob a mansion, after seeing it’s owner, some blonde duelist, leave on some long errand. You fight with two daggers, apparently belonging to your late father, they are easily the most valuable thing you own. What lies in your soul is rebellion.

Notes:
Using names or trips in this quest is heavily discouraged. While it is impossible for me to prevent you from doing so, I ask that you not. I will also not count any votes made while using names or trips.
Well, you're here. You might as well have some fun with this. Channeling vys you have the temperature in the room start steadily dropping as the Vatis works to erode the statue. At first they don't seem to notice, and you can hardly blame them. You're barely reducing the temperature by a degree at a time. Indeed, it's only when you start to use Fire magic to make it appear as though runes have begun fading into view on the walls of the chamber that they seem to notice.
The nobleman is first to comment. In a hushed whisper he ask his companion. “Are you seeing this?” You afford yourself a brief peek over the edge of the abyss to watch as he gestures to the walls.
The Vatis, seeming tired out by the effort of eroding the statue, merely grunts in response while continuing to work. Only when the nobleman shakes him by the shoulder does he finally cut the flow of vys, barking out a terse. “What?!” At the other man. He loses his attitude upon noticing the walls, frowning deeply. “Did this happen last time you were here?”
The noble shakes his head slowly, wrapping his robes around himself a little tighter. “No, no it didn't. Those symbols are giving off a lot of vys and I really don't like the look of them.” A pause. “Is it just me or is the room fucking freezing?” By this point, dew had started to accumulate on the pillars and on the surface of the statue. You've probably lowered the temperature a good twenty or thirty degrees at this point and it seems like it was cool in the chamber to begin with.
You wouldn't know. You have no skin with which to gauge temperature.
After a minute or so of waiting, during which you choose not to increase the brightness of the runes or lower the temperature further, the noble coughs uncomfortably. “Let's get this over with. Not long now until we should find the scepter.”
(1/4)
The Vatis nods, reaching into a pocket on his robe and extracting a small locket. You detect a brief emission of vys, followed by a vast increase in the man's reserves. Then he tucks the locket back into his pocket and resumes his work with renewed vigor. You in turn increase the rate at which the temperature drops, and use Nature magic to whisper brief snatches of Old Samjan into their heads.
At first you start with single syllables, short words. Nothing overt. Then you get into more foreboding phrases. Warning them of vengeance, of their impending death, of the curse placed upon the tomb and the horrid creatures which slumber beneath. They do not heed your warnings, and so they must suffer for it.
Faces form briefly from the stone of the walls, their lips moving soundlessly in time with the whispers you force into their thoughts. Again, the nobleman is the one to notice but he seems struck dumb, speechless. He stairs in wordless horror as from the wall bleeds a formless creature, its face contorted in unimaginable pain. It's just then that the Vatis concludes his work, revealing the skeletal remains of some rich fool. More importantly, revealing a long staff wrought from Elaudian Steel and capped with the same material you found in such abundant supply in the palace.
The real center piece of the staff is a small metallic ball practically bursting with power, arcs of lightning shooting off at random only to be captured by the cage it sits within. The ball isn't obviously supported by anything, but rather floats free within the staff's head. You get the distinct impression that the entire thing is unstable, on the cusp of releasing a wave of destructive vys which will no doubt destroy the entire temple.
(2/4)
The Vatis is already snatching up the scepter, even as the noble struggles to warn his companion. It's then that you choose to spring your trap. Leaping from the abyss you assault their thoughts with a horrendous shriek, enjoying the panicked shout of the nobleman as stone figures spring fully formed from the walls, a dozen of the shuffling puppets moving to block off their root to the exit. The noble makes a snap decision, breaking out into a sprint towards the door, but you have an icy hand form from nothing to clutch his foot.
He falls flat on his face, kicking and screaming with wild abandon only to be freed by a burst of fire from his Vatis companion. They don't seem to have quite noticed you yet, so you position yourself inside the coffin and rise slowly from within, wreathed in fire and shards of ice.
The first thing the Vatis sees when he turns around is your ghostly form rising from what is supposed to be a grave, and his reaction is instinctual. He lets out a high pitched, girlish scream and sends a hasty bolt of flame soaring in your general direction. You barely need to apply any sort of effort at all to deflect the reckless assault, and it smashes into the ground with a burst of flame.
It's as you raise into the air and drift towards them, muttering into their thoughts promises of eternal torment, that twin runic arrays in the walls flare to life and release a veritable flood of the same model of spider constructs you encountered in the palace. They surge forward with wild abandon, the would-be looters quickly surrendering themselves to panic at the sight of the swarm.

I was too young to witness the 1st explosion of the Tabletop RPG fad of the early 1980s as I was born in '79. I witnessed the Collectible Card Game craze of the early 1990s in middle school.
So what will be the next gaming fad with even mainstream appeal? Or are we living in it with the current explosion of board gaming?
When do RPGs make a comeback? Most of the growth seems to be adults in their 30s and 40s with disposable income rediscovering their interest in gaming.
Comeback from what? More people play RPGs than ever.
>>43563324
This.
It's just that they're spread out across dozens of systems and games instead of all being funneled through 2-3 megatitans.
Yeah, tabletop gaming in general is in the middle of a renaissance. We've never had it so good.
You are someone of small renown, but big enough that others like you look up to your guidance and strength in times of need. Times like now. Your home lies somewhere over the horizon, or under the earth, or in another world. You either came here by running from an enemy that can't be beaten or from a situation that can't be solved and now wishes to try your luck on the wild-lands instead.
No matter where you came from, here is where you will make history with your own hands. Grab your destiny and strike the land!
Application Sheet below. The game is for 4 to 6 people, stretching up to 7 or more in hard cases. It's my first time, so please be patient.

Explaining the Game:
Attributes work as a dice pool. Each point in one attribute equals +1d6 that can be used for a given challenge, quest or duel.
In a challenge a rating will be set and victory is given by equalling or exceeding this rating in the number of dice a player is allowed to roll, according to his actions and abilities.
A quest works much like a challenge but is much harder and works across many turns, allowing a player to accumulate towards its rating while doing other challenges.
Duels are challenges where the rating is set by another player.
Weapons are anything with which a player can attack: a sword, a fireball spell, a curved dagger. Each weapon has a different number of stats.
Items are different items that influence the player’s actions in a major way: a ring of invisibility, a cloak of elvenkind, etc.
Entourage is a small and personal group that follows your directions and give you boons or disadvantages in certain rolls. A hunter that helps you find your prey, a small-time burglar that made it really hard getting the help of the nearby town militia, etc.
Command is more far-reaching than an entourage and gives different benefits or penalties. A small villa of woodsmen that you have funded and protect, the spirit of the wilds you have saved last full moon from a werewolf, etc. By either sword or sorcery these people have come to respect and count on you and are under your lasting influence.
Now, your starting positions will all be given according to race and culture, so worry not about it.
