My next project is 40k civilians... They can be used as objectives, role playing pieces, or just to give your battlefield that nice "lived in" feel.
Any suggestions? Thoughts? which kits would you guys use?
>>43589798
Wild West Exodus has a solid set of rules for civilians that I'd steal. Should be easy to adapt to 40k too. WWE uses D10, but you can just use D6 and a artillery dice to determine random movement.
As for which minis to use...
40k is a little tricky in that regard because it's IG and other human sized minis look grotesque compared to historical minis.
That aside I think you can find some Reaper Chronoscape pieces that could work, some Crooked Dice minis that could work too, but probably the most likely to work would imo be the Wargames Foundry Ranges and the Lead Adventure ones.
Since 40k is a huge setting you could also just use WHFB minis if you are playing a game set on a feudal world, but that depends on what you are going for.
Victoria Miniatures has a great range of Penal Legionnaires for Prison worlds. Warlord has some Woodland indians for Feral Deathworld kind of stuff.
Most commonly you'd probably want modern minis with some decorative elements which you can get by mixing the above mentioned first stuff with some bits for flavor.
Wargames Foundry's Landsknechts with bionic eyes and other 40k flavored details would look pretty good too I imagine.

I've been thinking about how to have a DnD type game where characters don't gain XP or levels, but grow in power in other ways, mostly by looting.
>Fighters find magical weapons and armor
>Wizards find scrolls and books with new spells
>Rogues and skillmonkey type characters get to spend X number of points on skills that they used during a session at the end of it
>All characters can find various useful items
What do you think?
Have you got ideas for other classes?
How the hell would clerics improve themselves?
>>43589736
Disjunction would be hell because it'd be like leave drain except it always sends you back to level 1 And you can't gain them back overtime like normal.
>>43589777
If you're already rewriting the system to remove XP, additionally rewriting disjunction into not affecting items or being temporary will not be a problem.
>>43589736
haveyoutriednotplayingdnd.jpg
Seriously though, classes and levels are, I would say, the two most integral components of D&D. You could maybe tweak the level system (to drastically reduce hit point gain, for instance), but the point at which you dispense with it, you're essentially playing a different game.
Do you guys like having special named characters for factions in different wargames?
Do you like fielding them or you rather have your own generic captains, with their own stories, merits and deeds crafted and imagined by yourselves?
How do you feel about games like Warhammer 40K, Fantasy, Infinity or WarmaHordes, that have dozens of named characters for every faction, each with their own backstories and defining traits?
Do you feel it adds to the complexity of the wargame, or you rather have your own backstories for your whole armies?
Maybe the same goes for Space Marine Chapters for example. Would you rather have your own chapters with their own colors and specialties? Same goes for Warhammer, Mordheim or whatever.
I've noticed a trend towards named characters in the most popular and recent wargames.
Pic related it's Achilles from Infinity. Also, Infinity sculpts are fucking gorgeous
>>43589505
infinity is horrible at taking random historical character, tossing them in, and their wargame mechanics don't do anything the real character would do.
bad starting example.
worse, WarMaHordes has no customization, and you are forced to play with a Named Character.
40K, for all the shit it gets, is best in that you have to discover who the guy is, and you can just leave him out....
40K is also about 'Your Dudes'
>>43589820
Well that's more or less the debate, but I grant you the point.
What if the named characters were described the same way they act mechanically on the tabletop? I mean, if the fluff says the guy is a master tactician, the rules of the game should represent this.
Just imagine if it was nicely done, maybe the example was bad, I don't know, never played too much Infinity. Was going to post a WH40K image, but anyway...
What do you mean about 40K is best in that you have to discover who the guy is?
About 'your dudes', yeah, I think that's what the debate is about.
For example, in a game like Mordheim, Necromunda, 40K kill teams or whatever I think that having no named characters adds a lot. I've never seen a skirmish game like that, with lots of advancements and everything that included named characters. But in a competitive game, where all kinds of effects and trade offs can be included... are they worth?
>>43589873
He means that if in a game of IG vs Orks, you have a meganob that annihilates all three of the enemies Lemans, you might name the meganob Bolgog Tankkrumpa. And then what ever his backstory is might evolve from the events of that game.

What are your thoughts on running missions in current warzones, like Syria or the Donbass Region? How would you do it?
>>43589365
Could get some good mileage out of mythos stuff underpinning one of the conflicts. Say the only reason Assad hasn't been assassinated is because of some dark magic he found hidden away in a Crusader ' s tomb in Damascus, and he had to start a war to kill Muslims to power it, tying back to whatever deal the Crusader made.
Then I would lead them to think Donbass or w/e had similar causes underneath, only to find out that nope, just plain old human evil.
Now I want to rum this. Thoughts?
>>43589486
I think mythos stuff needs to be incidental to the conflict itself or else that cheapens them both. Cosmic horrors shouldn't care about border conflicts and "the dictator is a necromancer!" is a Saturday morning cartoon.
Use the conflict as a way to encounter the mythos, sure. The war might take place over an underground Yithian ruin, prompting a squad to hide in the caverns, maybe use it as a supply depot while a Flying Polyp is stalking them.
>>43589486
Shit I mean, I hadn't put much thought into it, my DG scenario pitches start with the end in mind, like the one I'm writing now about an assault on a drug lord's mansion.
But yeah, the dark, Muslim-soul-fueled-Crusader Magic sounds neat, though I don't think you'll have an easy time connecting it to the ongoing Ukrainian crisis. Maybe have the whole Syrian shit-storm be caused (or at least sparked) by someone trying to get as many dead Muslims as possible.
Sorta like someone saw the casualty figures for Gettysburg and thought that 46,286 killed, wounded and missing was pretty good for three days of WWI fighting.
“Knight-Lieutenant?”
You can see Ayuz’s face looming over you. You move to strike it but there are hands on your thighs and your arms and your feet pinning you to the ground, their skin rough, the ground rougher. This is not the first time it happens. You know what follows, and you cry out for Srahen, but your head can’t move either, and your mouth sprouts fingers from within, locking with fingers without.
“Lady Heldeqi?”
He planned this, he planned it all, you can see his wicked grin as he strokes Srahen’s wings, his officer’s sword glistening inside its scabbard. But you have other concerns, and your nightmare begins anew, your stomach bloating with corruption, eating your future as something invades you from the inside.
“Lady Larre?!”
You wake up shivering madly in the crepuscular dawn of the forest, a foul taste in your mouth and a blanket on your shoulders.
“Let me not have to correct you again, Squire-Sergent,” you snap, your tongue doughy from sleep.
“My L—Knight-Lieutenant, please accept my apologies. It won’t happen again.”
He does look contrite, even if his accent is too thick for you to read his tone. A good soldier, from his reaction to your unfair rebuke, and from his grade. Very good even. Odd for a commoner to become a Squire, but you guess hard assignments require hard men.
“No worries, then. Your apologies are duly accepted.”
“My thanks, Knight-Lieutenant. We let you sleep, since you’ve been obviously in some deep sh—Ah, trouble. Would it be too much to ask about them?”

"Treachery and ill fate. I believe the barbarous treatment of my dragon speaks more on the cruelty of our adversaries than my words ever could".
Do you ever get the feeling the sometimes, the players miss the point of the campaign? Not that they're playing badly or being murderhobos, but that what the DM and the PCs have in mind really isn't in the spirit of what was intended. I'll start by saying that I'm usually a forever DM, and I've finally had the chance to sit down as a player after someone else took over. But I just can't help but be a little off-balance by the way things are going.
We're playing the Wrath of the Righteous Adventure Path, which I've read through, but which the DM has made a lot of changes to. I know, I know that I shouldn't have foreknowledge of the module, but I've actually run the AP two groups back, and I'm really just enjoying the ride. I'm still trying to frame my thoughts, but I guess I have to start from somewhere.
Okay, the first major change is that the very first module begins with the PCs waking up after a cave-in, with a trio of NPCs. The DM changed the NPCs significantly, especially the most notable one: There's this M-to-F transsexual (accomplished using a Belt of Gender Change) who - in the normal module - is in a relationship with a female half-orc Paladin. S/he's been replaced by a female Elven cleric with a broken leg, while the blind Wizard is the module is now a blinded would-be Crusader named Sir Edern. The last character (a cowardly merchant) still remained, but the party left him to die early on in the module.
Now, our party is as follows: Male Human Warpriest (me), Male Human Inquisitor, Female Elven Sorceress, Female Elven Ranger. I mention this because of the character dynamics that followed.
>>43589297
See, Irabeth, the Half-Orc paladin with the transgender wife, has been excised from the module, too. She's been replaced by Sir Edern's father, Lord Hulrun. Now, Sir Edern is a Lawful Good Templar who wants to be a Paladin. His father, a guy in his late 40s to early 50s, is a Chaotic Neutral Cavalier of the Order of the Cockatric, whose code is literally 'be a dick'. He is rough, merciless in combat, believes in 'kill 'em all and let God sort them out' and has a wandering eye. I bring this up because the female Sorceress initially started up a relationship with Sir Edern, and then started fucking his father behind his back.
I'll restate that she's fucking his dad while dating him, like something out of an NTR story.
Also, the group's Inquisitor has decided to start a pogrom (as you do) to hunt out suspected demon-worshippers and put them to the torch. He's not especially picky about this - thought he has snatched up a lot of cultists and suspected cultists - and has confiscated all their wealth in the name of the Church. Last of all, the Ranger?
Well, this is worth stating: The DM had a subplot where, in the middle of the night, a shadow-demon assassin snuck into our headquarters with mayhem on his mind. As a shadow demon, it vaguely resembles a serpent-bodied humanoid with collapsible arms, very skeletal, very bony. This is the closest image I could find, but I've spoilered it because it's only partially safe for work.
So the assassin snuck up on the Ranger first, but she woke up and armed herself before it could death attack her. Now, you'd expect her to sound the alarm...But instead, she talked to it.
And then she fucked it.
>>43589304
Yes, in a campaign that's all about being demon-slaying heroes, one of the party has a 'love interest' that is an unspeakably corrupt demon. She's taken it as her lover, and she regularly lets it slip away for the two of them to hook up as a kind of secret. The PC doesn't really have any intention of being corrupted, she's just enjoying the feeling of doing something illicit.
I don't know, /tg/. I like the game so far and all. But the campaign feels like it's going off-the-rails somewhat, and it's leaving sort of a bitter taste in my mouth. This doesn't feel very heroic, so to speak, you know? It's kind of tawdry and depressing, all things considered.
We're still progressing with the plot, but I don't feel that the other PCs are very heroic at all. My character's subplot is his romance with cover girl and redeemed succubus Arueshalae, but the others don't seem to be getting into the 'epic hero of light thing'.
Am I being too sensitive here? Is my foreknowledge of the early modules ruining things for me? Or am I right to say that the group shouldn't be behaving like this?
>>43589297
The point of this campaign, like any campaign, is for the people playing it to have fun. If they're having fun, they're not missing the point.
If you're not having fun, leave. Otherwise, lighten up and stop taking it so seriously. You can't force other people to play the game the way you want them to, you can only join in or go find a different game.
Would you ever get a /tg/ tatoo? Elf ears? Horns? Magnets under the skin?
Did you ever meet anyone with larp related body morphs?
