Currently playing and greatly enjoying Game of Thrones 2.0. My local group has picked it up as our L5R replacement until the LCG launches.

On that note, we were playing Doomtown pretty frequently, but due to how AEG handled the sale of L5R, we don't know if we want to continue.

Pandora timidly tries herself, but you can tell her heart's not really in it. Seems violence just isn't in her heart, or the equivalent, anyway. Still, you're proud of her for trying.

I say try running, she might like the extra room to use. plus i feel her speed might be a little bit more of a better variable to test since physically lifting and hitting things have hard coded limits as compared to running.

TG, how do you weigh the "giants" of your setting? By giants, I mean humanoid creatures anywhere from 50% to 100% larger than your typical human, a la the picture on the left. Do you do a lazy scaling based on the creature maintaining standard human proportions and bodily diameters, or do you attempt to try and devise something biologically accurate/plausible, with the substantially thicker limbs and bones proportional to height, increased bone and muscle density, etc? What weight would you expect a 2.5-metre humanoid to have? How much stronger would you expect a "tribal" male of the species to be, as compared to a "tribal" male human?

I go for the lazy scaling. Past a certain height even changing the proportions doesn't make the giant any more biologically plausible, so I just assume that they have some exotic compounds in their tissues with strength to weight ratios sufficient for their size to work.

Im rewriting the armor system for a game id like to riun with friends, i feel like its kind of ridiculous that armor only adds to the difficulty to land a hit on a target rather than softens the damage done to them. essentially as it stands you roll a d20 to hit and add their armor class to your roll, if its 20 or more you hit, anything else glances off. I was thinking of making chance to hit based on situational cover instead and armor just used to modify what damage is actually done if they do hit.

TLDR how do i convert number ranging 0-7 to a damage reduction modifier

Listen, OP, you sound like an OK guy, so I'm-a do you a solid here.

Thing is, I can either give you the answer straight, or I can shove you in the right direction and let you find out on your own. In one case, you get a fish. In the other, you learn how to fish.

And this question you're presenting to us sounds like it'd benefit by being thought of as, 'what is the best armor system in a game and why are you using it?' -- to which I'll say that most d20-based games are about quickly-resolving narrativist/gamist fun and not realism.

See, it looks like you want lots of modifiers and stuff for increasing and decreasing armor values. THat being the case, I can recommend a change of pace from the d20 to the d6 (as Shadowrun does it) or the 3d6 (as GURPS does it) or the d10 (as World of Darkness does it).

The exception I keep coming back to is Numenera -- viz d20-based games being gamist, that is.

What's the rest of the system? A static DR instead of AC will quickly become useless as characters start having 60+ HP and enemies are expected to throw out 2d12+14 damage per attack. DR either requires similar values of HP/Damage across the board or have it scale to HP.

Maybe ignore damage less than 1/X your character's max HP? Just an idea off the top of my head but that might be an easy-to-scale approach. 1/10 for light, 1/5 for medium, 1/3 for heavy? Or maybe X=(AC+3), so AC+7 (the worst, if I'm reading your post correctly) only stops attacks weaker than HP/10 while the AC+0 (the best) stops attacks weaker than HP/3. It's a bit mathier but you shouldn't need to crunch numbers in-game (you would only have to actually do the numbers when switching armor, and that isn't something that happens mid-combat).

Hear ye, hear ye, I call to order another meeting of the Mage Guild. All arcanists concerned, please assemble.

As you're all aware, the useless hippies at the Circle of Druids managed to block our plan to blow up the moon at the Interguild Meeting, saying that the benefits of being able to study moon rocks didn't outweigh the drawbacks of tides becoming unpredictable. Now, it goes without saying that druids are useless leeches that should be put down for the good of everyone, especially their own children who no longer need to be contaminated by their stupid beliefs, but since we currently lack the authority to do such a thing, we'll have to think of another way to study moon rocks. Does anyone have any suggestions?

As to the "moon rocks" query, there are about four or five spells that I can think of, off the top of my head, that could get one or two of your more trustworthy apprentices up there and back, alive. Send some skeletons and you drop it down to one: Cave's Dichromatic Portal.
Or just have your Eldritch specialist contact one of the Outer Gods, s/he won't miss the sanity they'll lose from it.

A parody splat for nWoD that I we will build in this thread.

The characters can chose betweeen clans of freaks: Body Modifcators, Tattoo artists, biohackers, maybe Drug dealers.

They are rejects from the society but unlike every other nWoD splat they acquire no powers only more social problems.

Their enemies are angry moms, devote christians, and police officers.

What would be a game goal for a coterie of freaks? What would be in game consequences of acquiring eye tattoo, horns, rastas etc.?

You had a happy smile all day that morning. Not only was it the weekend and you had no classes at your university, today was also a day you promised to go out with Ruri. She was a long time childhood friend of yours. For as long as you can remember you have been together. "I wonder if Ruri made lunch today..." You thought to yourself as you get ready that morning.

Although the two of you promised to go to the same university, an unfortunate accident happened and she had to stay behind a year in high school. "She'll be joining me next year, our promise will be complete then." You thought to yourself. After you take a shower and change into nicer clothes, you head over to her house. Dungeons and Dragons, Yahtzee, and a huge number of other games all rely on throwing dice--from the 4-sided pyramid shape to the familiar 6-sided cube and the monster 20-sided variety. The dice are meant to introduce an element of chance to these games; we expect that the outcomes of the rolls will be truly random.

However, new theoretical models and high-speed movies of dice rolls of numerous shapes and sizes confirm this is not strictly the case. They show that dice thrown with a 1 on the top are slightly more likely to land as a 1 than as the other values for every type of the various kinds of dice they studied. But at the same time, it's usually too hard for someone to predict the outcome of the throw of a single die--you'd have to know the starting conditions of the throw and its environment so precisely that for all practical purposes, the result could be considered random.

Exploring a question that was debated in the 17th century by scientists and mathematicians Blaise Pascal and Pierre de Fermat, and many others before and since, doctoral student Marcin Kapitaniak at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland and his co-authors created a sophisticated theoretical model of the die throw in three dimensions. They considered how the effects of gravity, air resistance, friction of the table, and other factors influence the outcome of the roll. In addition, they observed the fall of the die with a high-speed camera that could capture the die's trajectory at a rate of 1500 frames per second. What did they find to be the most important factor?

"The initial position of the die," Tomasz Kapitaniak,of the University of Lodz in Poland, wrote to me in an email. Small changes in the position can significantly affect the outcome. Other factors are less significant. "The air resistance can be neglected," he said.

However, he quickly added, "friction is important."

With a high-friction table, in which the dice can't slide across very easily, the dice tend to bounce around more times, tumbling and twirling, and making the results harder to predict. With a smooth, low-friction, or soft table, the dice tend to bounce fewer times.

Even bouncing doesn't always mix things up. The high-speed video showed that dice frequently did not change their face even after a bounce.

Could gamblers use the knowledge from this paper to their advantage, by placing the desired value of their roll as the highest-lying face of their die?

"I don't know how to use it practically in casino," Kapitaniak wrote. Players would have to know everything so precisely--most importantly, the exact position of the die--to be able to predict the results with certainty.

On the other hand, casino operators won't ever be able to achieve 100% random rolls with dice. They often drill the pips--the little dots in dice--and fill it with uniformly weighted material in efforts to make all sides of the dice equally probable to come up in a roll.

"Drilling the pips...gives the symmetry in the die but symmetry is not enough" to make it random, he said. "[The] top face will always be more probable."

If not random, is the die roll chaotic--the popular concept that originated in the second half of the 20th century, in which small differences in starting conditions can lead to large differences in end results? The most common example is the hypothetical picture of a butterfly flapping its wings in South America changing air circulation patterns to influence the weather halfway around the globe. The end result is knowable only if you have precise knowledge of the starting conditions of the world's weather.

A die roll is chaotic only if it bounces on the table an infinite number of times, according to Kapitaniak. But this is far from attainable, due to the fact that the die loses energy with each bounce due to friction.

With the high-speed camera images and the new theoretical treatment, this paper provides a new contribution to the question of the true randomness of dice throws and coin tosses. It contributes to an increasingly sophisticated understanding of what can be considered fully random in everyday life.

And in a more practical vein, if you're playing Dungeons and Dragons tonight, it probably wouldn't hurt to start your roll with the coveted 20 on top--it may occasionally give you the desired results, while Dungeon Masters could insist on playing on the roughest, highest-friction table they can find.
