Come to think of it, it's kinda weird that he's a principal figure in the jellical cats but has no song of his own. As Deuteronomy's second in command is he opted out of qualifying for reincarnation? He fights with Macavity the once but inconclusively and we don't know that he has any real skills. I dunno what to stat.

“What's his name?” you ask softly, holding your hat to your chest. You pocket the stone with a hole in it, frowning faintly in thought.

“Nathan Bookchild. His ma' was a soldier, called off to war when he was a babe. She left him in the care of the orphanage, an' a few months later...there was a letter. But he's had his master, the blacksmith, who's been like a father to the boy, and friends. Nathan's always wanted to be a soldier, like his mother.”

“I understand,” you murmur. You put your hat back on your head and look at Captain Marsh. “This was your idea. You'd better supply him.”

“Like he was one of my own men,” Marsh vows solemnly. Out of the corner of your eye you notice one of the Captain's men with his hand gripping the head of his battle hatchet.

"Got a problem, soldier?" you ask quietly.

"Just waiting for you to show your true colors," he condscends.

You shrug as you stand. "Must be hard to feel safe around people willing to break the law to save lives instead of people willing to obey it to end them."

The soldier's lunge is arrested by Marsh's palm against his chest. "Go pack our things," the Captain says coldly. His aggressive subordinate, seething, snaps a cold salute and marches away.

"How much time does Nathan have?" Marsh asks.

"A few days, at most. Which is plenty of time in the context, admittedly, but you're on a clock and so am I. If I can be paid, madam healer, I'll get my supplies and treat your patient. Trading certain death for an uncertain one is better than nothing."

The horned healer bustles through her home, putting coins and silver shavings into a small pouch. You separate the coins out and tuck them into your breast pocket; the silver, useful in your arts, is kept in the bag and tied to your belt.

"I'll escort you myself," Marsh announces. "Men, you're dismissed."

You quirk an eyebrow as the soldiers snap salutes and leave. Marsh steps out of the hut and offers you a hand down.

> Take the hand. He's trusting you, you can be nice to him.
> Coldly ignore it. He's still condemning you to your...second...death.
> Insult him.

Also choose one of:
> Just get your supplies (move the quest along)
> "So why'd you become a soldier?"
> "Why'd you turn me in?"
> "How'd you get the stick /that deep/ into your ass?"

Feel free to vote/re-vote for supplies. The basic list that Bri will attempt to gather, presuming no additions or objections, can be found here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/43890201/#p43901804

Mechanically, what is the funnest RPG?

Objectively, probably drinking games or ones that involve other substances.

Maybe one of them couples erotic games? Dunno, I suppose if you had the right set of sexually liberal people it might work rather than being super awkward.

Other than that, mathematical mechanics aren't exactly "fun" in the same way they can be fun in normal board games. The closer you get to tactical wargaming, and hence boardgaming, the more the fun-ness of the mechanics matters I think.

I guess there's still an argument that the average rpg needs mechanics that are more than just purely functional. But we still rely on roleplaying to deliver the moments that truly entertain us.

Am I better off learning & DMing Pathfinder, 2e or 5e?

Main appeal of 2e is the shitload of old school modules available. Though I hear Pathfinder is the shit and 5e is a better throwback to older editions.

5e if you actually want to play with people
2e if you want to be the 'alpha nerd' and have no friends
Pathfinder if you have no god damn idea what you're doing

You're better off learning the edition that people around you want to use.

Now the white wolf's return is more common knowledge among the clan, there's no escaping a confrontation with it, or at least, you have to be seen to try. People are already starting to resent you, after your promise of 'mild winters' turned out to be a load of crap, but while you can't do much to fight the diseases currently ravaging half your people, you can certainly allay their fears about a living beast. So with a great deal of attention on you, you take your spear and head into the hills that bracket the clan. The first night after you set out, the wolf approaches your tiny, guttering fire and sits down on its haunches.

"One year and I've learned a lot," it says. The beast speaks plainly, bluntly and with a trace of impatience about its tone. "I thought your pack would tear itself apart before the summer, but no. You held it together. And somehow, you became the alpha, despite another being stronger than you. That took me by surprise, but the more I watched, the more it became clear to me. You lead your pack to better hunting grounds; they followed you because you gave them more food. That was an important lesson, I think." It nods its great head, considering. "And then you brought back the river. That was VERY surprising, but told me a lot. For instance, I learned how to do this." A shiver runs through the animal, as its form contorts, stretching in some areas and compacting in others. Its muzzle shrinks and its fur retracts, but its ears and tail remain, as does the yellow of its eyes and a shaggy, wild head of white hair. "Brrrgh... You humans... How do you not freeze before you can put on the fur of other creatures?" It shuffles close to the fire and looks up at you. He seems to realise he's said a lot and now seems to be waiting for you to respond.

"Why are you stalking my people?" you ask, locking eyes with the beast. "And what do you intend for my daughter?"
The wolf raises his eyebrow. "To watch and to watch," he replies. "Didn't I tell you this before? You humans are interesting; you're weak and slow, but you make fire and make your claws, rather than growing them and you burn your meat before eating it and wear the furs of other creatures, as you can't grow your own. I chose to watch your pup because she is new and will be seeing everything for the first time." He pauses and looks a little smug. "I learned to talk much faster than her."

You try to hold the wolf's gaze, but he seems to tire of the attention, staring back and you find you are unable to meet his eyes for long. Their intensity is just too strong, too much like he's deciding if he's hungry enough to eat you. "Your bitch has another one on the way, doesn't she," he says. It's not a question. "I think I'll watch that one too and see if there's anything I've missed. After that... Well, we'll see. Now... I have questions. First: Why did you come looking for me, especially alone? That's stupid of you; I could kill you easily. Second: What is your interest in the river? She's started looking like you humans. She's never done that before. I want to know what she wanted to know."

How will you answer?
>I came to tell you to leave
>I came to find out what you know
>I came to be friends
>I came to kill you

>The river has a name, you know
>Who knows what she's thinking?

I don't have read much about them, and i am by far no expert on 40k fluff, but to me they always appear like the ultimate dedicated defenders.
They don't care much about mowing things down in the name of the emperor, as long as it's not actively coming at them. Then they show everyone else how the job is done.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but i see them as the indestructible yellow brickwall of Terra.
>>
>>43914794
You've got it right. It's that they are the greatest of humanities defenders.

Also, they created the greatest successor chapter. Black Templars FTW!

I could use some help, /tg/.

I'm struggling with a group of 5 players, and 8 others have told me that they're interested. We're all from the same school, and they're reluctant to play with strangers.

What's the ideal group size? How do you run a big group? What should I do about the rest?
17 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>43912603
No more than 5, cap at 6.

Split into multiple groups if necessary or just tell them you have enough peeps already. If they wanna play that badly someone else can learn to GM
>>
>4 is ideal
>5 is really pushing it
>I don't play in games with 6+
>I don't believe you when you tell me that your personal DM can manage 20 players with ease. You just have low expectations. Stop sucking a shit DMs cock.
>>
I'd say 4 players is ideal, 6 as a maximum for comfortable play, and 8 as extremely uncomfortable but tolerable. In any system with initiative, the more people you have doing things one at a time on that list the shittier and slower things get.

So I finally beat this and honestly what a great game. Perhaps one of the things that kept me most captivated was how much detail they put into describing the Planescape setting through the narrative, and it interested me as to how to adapt it into a campaign.

What is your experience with Planescape?
