Pokemon has the best art of any CCG, Magic art can't even compare. Of course pokemon as a card game is shit, but the art is frankly objectively superior to that of any Magic card.

In the campaign I'm running, one of the NPCs is an older warrior. Not a man of incredible skill or mighty strength, or even great glory, but a stalwart, taciturn fellow who has seen many things and weathered them. The PCs haven't known him for too long and haven't seen him in action too much, but they like him. He also has a magical sword of indeterminate (but apparently modest) power he always fondly describes "his loyal friend, always at his side and always trustworthy".

Last session, this NPC was grievously wronged and wounded by the BBEG's minions, and was rendered crippled and incapable of fighting. The PCs are pretty furious and swearing revenge, and the old warrior, knowing they're going to need all the help they can get (not just for avenging him, but also to actually have a chance at victory as a whole), gave them his sword, hoping it'll do them at least some good.

The session ended pretty much there, and now the problem is that I'm not so sure what exactly the sword should do. It was pretty much a spur-of-the-moment idea that they should get the sword, and I hadn't really given it too much thought beforehand. So, what exactly should a modestly powered, "trustworthy" sword cherished by an old warrior do? I'm thinking of something more low-key, possibly passive or reactionary in nature, but something better than just the equivalent of +1 bonuses (because let's face it, there's nothing intresting about a sword whose only perk is a numeric bonus).

What kind of a weapon would an old, enduring warrior cherish and find always useful, even if it's not mighty or incredibly destructive in nature? What kind of a weapon would always feel reassuring him, even if just a bit, to carry at his side against danger?

The sword is always at the hands of its owner when they need it, literally. If they are disarmed and thrown into the dungeons, it will just be there, under some dirty blankets or a bench, or even their goddamn pantleg.

Their faithful ally, always at their side, and always trustworthy.

Have you considered something like an adaptive blade? Nothing particularly impressive. but something like it lengthens to give the fighter some distance when wounded, gets a couple of blood grooves after a couple of fights. It sharpens itself quietly while resting, it heats up on a cold night.

The blade is truly a companion, and wants to be helpful, loyally changing itself to help the fighter, no matter the odds.

Might be a bit abuse-prone if the sword literally appears anywhere. But I've always liked the idea of a special item that finds its way back to its owner, no matter what, possibly at the time of great danger.

Like, instead of just inexplicably being there in the darkest, grimiest, deepest prison hole, it will find its way into your hands when you stage a daring escape. Possibly carried by a guard who stumbles and falls, or just sitting on a table you run past, or otherwise within your grasp.

Maybe it'd be cool to have an item that's generally "lucky", in the sense that things always seem to go a bit more towards your way when you have it. Like, in game terms, the player can ask a number (whatever feels good) of scene-specific questions, like "Is one of the guards that attack me actually drunk off his ass" or somesuch opportunate, plausible things that could be true and could help the character.

In a campaign I played in, there was a blessed dagger that ensured that no wound caused on the character would fester or otherwise slay the person afterwards, only through direct, immediate damage. Like, no matter how badly you were bled and gutted, as long as you wouldn't outright perish from it, you would persist and get better. Bleeding and infection, mostly. I don't remember if diseases and the like were also included.

Of course, that's only useful if the game system actually has distinct wounds and complications thereof.

Welcome one, and I welcome you all to the tale of a world called Thespia.

Here is the odyssey of one that clings to this world with no face of their own! In a place where magic is fundamental to all of creation, all who live wear their lives upon their face, where a fire might wish to be the cooking fire of an inn!

Previously the Faceless set boundaries with a clingy Protean foxwoman, letting her know of his role's status as a widowed man. Bereft with guilt, she had begun to flee yet the faceless urged her to stay.

Feeling that the rebels could potentially become a greater fighting force with the right "Allies," The Faceless incites them to seek out pacts, finding the old innkeep, Valce a friend in a simple campfire while the Huntress, Oddette, made do with a far more vicious partner.

As she performed her trial, The faceless assisted Mira in getting her two pacts to work together and let the girl train on her own as he fell into slumber and saw visions of his Face's past.

His old allies and friends under the cloak of night and a young Hylon King by the name of Acer...

“Speak to me.” You whisper aloud to yourself. Your face, the Reaper has been quiet since the night that the Scourge fell and you let the Danhor go free. It's become more difficult to move with agility, and you can feel him resisting you. The others have been told that you're simply weary from the battle considering your age, and they've let you alone... Yet.

“We are not finished here. We must go to the Manor and see that the Guisi are safe, why won't you-”

A knock upon the door snaps you out of your introspection. “Reaper, I've brought you food and water. Are you awake to eat?” The voice is from a Guisi girl that's been helping you. Since the scourge slayed all the rebels in the wood, Mira's closed up, confining herself to a room that's sinee been called hers and not speaking to anyone, especially not you. Valce barely escaped with his life, still asleep and being treated by Eko. The other Guisi seemed wary of the Protean at first, yet she's been of such help that they allow her to stay.

Gaffer and Cornel don't blame you, for what happened, though they have their own mourning to do. No one's seen Odette recently however, and that worries you considering what happened with her... Her family.

I've been browsing through my 40k art file /tg/, and noticing all the images I have of angelic or daemonic winged astartes I began to wonder, would space marines look better if they were more or less literal angels in appearance? Not necessarily in the face, but possessing mutant bird wings for unaided flight.

You are Siris Erickson, and you are a mutant. This is hardly surprising, considering both of your parents are mutants, and you grew up surrounded by mutants. Despite being somewhat of a late bloomer with your powers, the leaders of the Xavier Institute saw incredible potential in you and your abilities. With the ability to control the wavelength and frequency of light, as well as emit light from your body, you could theoretically do incredible things, although that is currently limited to a limited control over the light in the surrounding area and the ability to concentrate light into a laser. Both of which tend to give you painful headaches, and you can only do those with the help of a specially created suit. You were accepted into the Xavier Institute mid-year despite the late arrival of your powers, and you have been accepted into the Paragons squad.

You shut your eyes, trying to drown out the loud, droning music. You really weren’t used to clubs, and it wasn’t exactly the best place to have a serious conversation. Still, your brother’s life could be on the line. It was too important for you to get distracted. What were you going to do? Kaufman was too dangerous to talk to on his own, especially considering you were just some nobody. You had no other leads, unless you could find something else... and then it hits you.

Kaufman’s daughter. She had the most connection to this out of anyone. If only you could find her. You open your eyes, and glance at your friends. “We need to find Alison Kaufman. Do you guys have any ideas?” Rahne chews on her bottom lip before nodding. “Aye. If you could find me something of hers, I could probably track her down. It’s not a perfect solution, but it’s something.”

Match shrugs, “Or, uh, we could ask some people here if they know what she’s up to. Apparently she hung out with that drug dealer guy over there,” he points towards a blue man. Someone you recognize in fact. Jazz. A lowlife wannabe rapper that used to push drugs for Zapruder, before apparently switching sides. He tended to know a lot about everything that was going on, and conveniently, he was a massive coward.

You go over the options in your mind. Lewis might have kept something of hers back at home, and Rahne could use that to track her down, maybe. Or, you could just investigate the old-fashioned way, and have a chat with Jazz.

There is no reason for an organic species to intentionally invent Von Neumann probes, especially weaponized ones, unless they just decided to destroy the universe and themselves along with it.
No matter how alien their cultural values are, they must have a self-preservation instinct. What possible use could they have for a machine that consumes resources exponentially and never builds anything but copies of itself? To prevent rival civilizations from evolving? Seems overly destructive compared to monitoring planets that might be a problem in the future and intervening as needed.
I can imagine something similar being used as a terraforming tool if it were given directives more complex than "grind planet to dust, make more probes, repeat", but if you encounter a machine that simply self-replicates for the sake of self-replication, you can be sure either it wasn't designed by anything organic, or it was an accident.
Am I wrong?

I think the assumption for most Von Neumann swarms is that they were originally made for something else but are malfunctioning. Like you said, they're meant to be able to do more than just make more of themselves, but something broke in their programming so that's all they do now. Endlessly running the self-replication loop and disregarding any commands to build other things.

There's a good chance that they're not JUST Von Neumann machines but also have other functions, perhaps.

Like providing exploration data, or mining and sending back raw materials to a particular spot, or fighting against another von neumann probe swarm.

It could even be an intelligent Von Neumann swarm.
