Depends on the setting, depends on the character, depends on the player, depends on the GM. Or, you could google near death experience and not ask random assholes to do the leg work for you. Maybe he's less of an asshole? Maybe he retires from adventuring? Maybe he's a nihilist, finds god, goes full hedonist, etc. Fuck man, it's up to you and to roleplay.

That's more or less my favourite way to start any campaign. My favourite one was;

The table was stunned, and quick as that the party's thief (a really cool guy who does voice acting) shouts "NOT GUILTY! I swears I may be a no good rotten pickpocket, but I'll not have me name sallied with these lies of child murder!" Soon the rest of the party all chimed in, with stories of alibis and other anecdotes to clear their names. Was a great session and all of them came out with a burning desire to find the shits who'd gotten them in trouble.

Objectively the best way to start the campaign.

I did run a CoC scenario released in unspeakable oath(?) where the players are escaped prisoners from a prison for the mentally insane. The scenario start with the players standing around a table having comitted a brutal ritualistic murder. Nobody remembers anything. That one worked out amazing.

Kinda want ideas on how I could use a similar start for a pathfinder/d&d style game instead?

So you switched out a rite of flame and a chrome mox from standard TES so you can play 2 cabal rituals? Then instead of having Xanthid Swarms to stave off countermagic you have this single silence that you can't wish for along with a 4th abrupt decay and a telemin performance to auto kill lands?

I don't really see the point of what you are doing here. There's no active gain in resiliency. You still have the same ratio of card effects as TES and you don't have the 7th discard spell or 2 flex spot cards that ANT runs. You don't have a swamp to get against heavy wasteland openings. You also only have a single chain of vapor on your SB but double past in flames?

I like the Telemin. I don't really get going from 4 rite to 3 rite 2 cabal ritual with a rite of flame on the SB. Are you planning to burning wish for the 4th rite sometime? Is having another gy dependent ritual that otherwise nets +1 better than Chrome Mox? What kind of meta are you in that makes the 3 Xanthid Swarms less good than a Silence, a rite flame and I guess the second Past in Flames (in case the first one gets answered twice)?

Their motivation is to keep themselves from getting discovered by the general public. Other monsters draw attention and make this difficult, so other monsters need to be dealt with, discretely if possible.

You dun goofed. In fact this is so out of bounds, it must have been a mess to start with. Sounds like heroic chargen and an uncompromised Mythos arsenal, both are signs of breaking the genre.

Now the rules have no problem with this. But don't turn to the CoC community and look for a fix. This is more DnD with some HPL tacked on than it is CoC. We don't play the game like this because it's really boring. But you do whatever makes you happy.

As for what to do... You could pit the characters against each other, it's usually how evil stories go down. Greed, mistrust, deceit, betrayal... It can be fun.

Another way to go would be to take it into Better Angels. It's different mechanics, but its much more suited to superlatives and it has a nice twist on group dynamic. Mind you, Better Angels characters are good guys possessed by something evil, they try to keep it in check. But they have to compromise.

Something I'll say for Balance vs. Variety. I can see where he's coming from, in that the more weapons and numbers you add, the harder it is to make all of those numbers even.

Instead, if you're going to be adding a wide variety of options, you need to make them less numerical. The trade-off between options needs to fall outside of pure DPS calculations and be something that's harder to judge.

After breakfast with Bulma and Vegeta the next morning, it's time to get ready for your match with Goku, you did promise the man that the two of you would have a bout after all. He can't beat you, not if you go full strength, but he's a skilled fighter, you know that for damn sure. His Kaioken technique is also a wild card, depending on how far the man had managed to take it, he could certainly catch you off guard if you aren't prepard to deal with what he can dish out. If nothing else though, you're looking forward to this, he's gonna be a good training partner, and Vegeta wants to have a shot at the other saiyan as well... maybe you can have a three on one with them and Gohan like you did last time, that could be prett fun.

"Are you going to use your new form against Kakarot?" Vegeta asks from your side as the two of you fly towards Goku's home... something that's still stuck in your head after the last dream you had... delving into alternate universes can get really weird after all, especially when you find out how things could have gone if some slight alterations were made. Shaking your head free of those thoughts, you glance back to Vegeta. "That's sort of overkill isn't it? Goku is strong, but he's not that strong, even you can't handle that level of power 'Geets, and you're the strongest non-Arcosian alive."

She looks slightly annoyed at being reminded of her own 'weakness' compared to you, but that look quickly fades as she merely smirks at you. "You're underestimating Kakarot, it's an insult to a saiyan to hold back as much as you intend to against him. He may not know what it means to be a saiyan, but I plan on beating as much information as I can on that topic into his thick skull."
