Welcome to the Basement.png
357KB, 520x347px
In 1963, a nuclear detonation under the Nevada desert blew a hole in the world. The feds put a door over it, and a lock on the door; ninety tons of titanium and steel. They kept what was behind that door secret, too - the place it opened onto was just too weird and lethal for people to handle.

It's called a lot of things. The Basement. Downstairs. Some even call it the Dungeon, though the term is officially off-limits. The people in charge tend to call it the 'Subterrestrial Operations Theater', but nobody uses that name except on official reports. Whatever you call it, though, it's a world of magic and monsters, and people keep on going down in there to see what they can find. Mostly through, prettied up though it may be, greed; they want the magical gear that can be pulled out.

Thing is, that first hole isn't the only one. The Russians had two, the Americans made at least one more. It's suspected the Japanese have several, though they only officially admit one. The French and British have got them too. Most of those are top-secret, official clearance only. But after the Soviet Union collapsed, not only did everything they'd pulled out (or at least a lot of it) spread across the black market, one of their access points got more open. It's run by the Russian mob, of all people, and you do not mess with them if you're wise - though if you've got the cash, you can get in there.

And then there are the ones that are only rumors, at least officially. Treasure hunters head down into them, the ones made by failed states with suitcase nukes, or torn open intermittently by nuclear disasters - Chernobyl, for instance, is known to be a weak point. You're getting in through one of those, because - whether you served or not - you're out of the military and working privately.

You are Irue Valen, blood heir to House Valen, and currently you are meeting up with a potential investigator who might be able to secure you a way out of this miserable town of Carona. The Mayor's lockdown has been a thorn in your side ever since you returned, as it effectively prevented you from getting in - and now, getting back out - along with the rest of your peasant knights. You had decided to put off your meeting with the Shrine's head attendants in order to make good on this opportunity, so one way or another you were determined to make some kind of profit out of this venture.

With the words of your shadow guiding your actions, you issue a seemingly flustered apology to the sharp featured serving man who had managed to talk the boss of the pub into giving you a charity shift. You had only worked for a very brief time before vanishing off to the Shrine, which left you on thin ice upon your return... If you had been planning to have long term gainful employment here, anyway. It was easy to pass off your excitement and rush to give thanks to the Mana as simply an endearing quirk.

It wasn't as if any working class member of Carona was actually going to try and question your fondness for the Mana. The fact a Shrine even existed in this place pretty much guaranteed that its inhabitants were going to be primarily faithful.

Still, you were let off with a lecture about excitability and responsibility - The last thing you needed was a lecture about responsibility! - And allowed to help the night shift. To that end, you took a moment to verify your clothes were exactly where you left them, and then get be introduced to your new coworker. There was some confusion on your end when you were informed the man from this morning wouldn't be working with you anymore, but you suppose it makes sense that he wouldn't be working all day AND night...

"Hey, sugar."

In a related note, you don't feel exactly shocked that your 'new' coworker was the bubbly brunette from last night, either. You school away the brief expression of surprise at having met her again as she runs you over the work you'll be expected to do, as well as giving you some tips about... Well, getting tips from the night crowd.

Various small laughs were exchanged as you learned details about successful waitressing that you hadn't ever actually considered. You're not really sure how much of that particular form of serving applied to you, but advice was advice, and so you took it with a grain of salt. You suppose you could pull it off regardless, when it came down to it...

You noticed that she seemed a little distracted as the talks went on and the two of you waited for your shift to begin, and after a few moments you realize she had been watching the pub. You're not sure what exactly she was looking for, but the perpetual sweeping glances never seemed to come up with anything conclusive.

It's another average day at Bungupanoonga High School, and you're sitting around the handball courts with your girlfriend Mel and your side chick Gemma. It's second break on friday arvo, when your wog mate Georgios comes round the corner.
"Oi cuz! Ross!"
"Hey Georgy, what's up mate?" You say.
"Nah much mate, just came over cuz Fred's throwin' a gatho tomorrow night, told me to come tell you."
"Oh yeah? You coulda just texted me though."
"Nah he want me to come and make sure Gems and the other chick comes along."
"I'm in," Gemma says.
You look over to Mel. "Uh, I dunno," she says. "I'm not really one for parties."

You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

Currently, you have been tasked with a rather unusual mission. You were to track down and "eliminate" Hess.

"What do you mean by 'eliminate?'" You ask suspiciously. "Kill? Capture?"

"Depends on who you talk to." Sawyer grumbles. "Command is aware of Hess'... status, and believe that her capture could be massive bargaining chip in future negotiations with Reikland."

"So they want her as a hostage." You bluntly summarize.

"Well, that's the ideal option for them." Sawyer sighs. "However, their main concern is her status as a combat asset on the battlefield. The fact that she's been able to create such a difference during the battle at the Iron Foundry as well as singlehandedly eliminate over a dozen knights has them concerned about the possibility us running into her."

"And Breton wants us to kill her, I assume." Tarin says flatly, not even a question.

"It's odd, really." Sawyer shakes his head. "The Bretons both adore and absolutely despise her. They want her dead, but they want it done RIGHT."

"Let me guess. Nothing sneaky, but straight up one on one combat?" You frown.

"Bingo."

I'm writing up a source book for my 5th ed game. It seems like a great way for my players and I to keep track of lore, knowledge of the world, extra rules, etc.
But I'm not exactly sure how to do it. It seems like a big task all by itself. Are there any guides for this kind of thing? Perhaps a well written out source book I could follow?

If you intend it to be for your players, I'd say keep it short and focus on only the most important things. In my experience, a 16-page guide with broad-strokes outlines of the campaign world--geography, politics, setting, religion, races/cultures, any new rules, etc.--is probably the most that most players are willing to wade through and devote their attention to. Think the player's guides to the various Pathfinder APs, if you're familiar with them.

If, on the other hand, you're writing something because you think that other people might like running your campaign setting, or you enjoy creating your world and documenting it for your own sake, go nuts and make it as long as you wish. Just don't expect your players to digest a 300+ page document on the setting, for example.

Nice choice on the Edmund Blair Leighton artwork, by the way!

You can hardly keep your body awake. The morning is already hot from the burning sun, and your meditation will soon be over, but you must last a moment more. You graduated from the monastery of Sa'migel the Arcangel yesterday, and have been in quiet contemplation since. The monastery of Sa'migel is not prestigious or famous, no Stanford or Berkli or Yusielei, but it is the best your parents could afford. The life of a monk is hard, but far better than that of a fourth son of back-country peasants.

The sun is beating against your half closed eyes, and despite all your training, all you can think of is food. You remember the burritos your mother would make before your family went out to tend the fields. You can almost taste the ingredients in your mouth. What were they?

A. Potatoes, eggs, cheese, and when we were lucky, sausage.
B. Fish, noodles, greens and beans.
C. Avocados, hot peppers, rice, beans, and chicken
D. Squash, re-fried beans, cheese, rice, and when it was a good year, ground beef.
E. We always preferred tamales.

There is a flash of void energy as the Eyegore appears in a new distant system. Even before shaking off it's satellites like fleas from a hound it could see the conflict that raged around the medium blue star.

Turning it's gaze inwards to a large planet and the fleets engaged in a deadly battle. Dozens of capitol ships trade weapons fire with each other as swarms of fighters tear at each other in near melee range while flocks of sub-capitols rain death on their enemies. Multiple explosions mark where craft are sundered and destroyed in the pitched battle.

The Eyegore keeps a far distance several lightminutes away, the cluster of eyes drinking in the battle. Osjiic craft fight with militarized precision while the other fighters, a rather motley collection of shifts fight with an almost suicidal zeal. A jagged cruiser shaped like a massive beetle trailing atmosphere from a shattered hull rams itself into the side of an Osjiic Battleship before detonating in a ball of fire that engulfs both.

And then the Eyegore spots it. Twisting in the void of space is a pale white monstrosity, bolts of brilliant blue lighting raking across Osjiic ships and shattering their shields. A massive snake longer than a cruiser brings destruction among the Osjiic ships, the dozens of wings spaced along its body glinting with gossamer light. It's massive jaws snap down on a dropship and shred it to pieces scattering the doom crew into the void.

Your Eyegore found quite a spectacle. The Osjiic Empire hard at war with the forces of the Ahkam with one of the fabled serpents present for the battle itself.

Completed Research:
You had assigned the task of reading over the books gathered from the Sunscale Divers camp to a handful of Think Tanks. They spent the night with Cyclops turning the pages as they decoded the runic language and odd writing style.

What they learned was that most of the books were religious dogma. They spoke of the Mother in the Void and the Father from the Solar, divine entities that created the Sunscale to be their hands and mouths in the universe. The duty of all Sunscale was to spread the good word about the protective embrace of the Mother and the nurturing warmth of the Father. There were several chapters concerning the vileness of the undead, the Grand Necrotic Armada spoke of as an ancient evil and test for the Sunscale and their allies, mentioning Crystalline beings and Wasps only in passing.

Their holy texts reveal that the Sunscale have no homeworld, the planet long destroyed. The stone hulls and mountains that made up the Sunscale Flotilla and it's children fleets a reminder of their ancient home. It spoke of bringing aid and peace to the troubled and weak while dispensing righteous justice onto the wicked and sinful.

The other books are a collection of personal logs from Divers. The Divers appeared to be the Sunscales answer to wetwork (sometimes literally) and sabotage. There were brief entries in a log detailing raids and observation missions on Osjiic, Ahkam, and even Confederate worlds.

In one personal journal they discover a small packet of round seeds and a list of instructions for their growth in alien waters. The strange dried plant discovered in the Divers belongings a seagrass believed taken from the ancient oceans before the loss of their world. The findings are sent to the Think Tank experimenting with the plant helping with its research.

There was a short list of coordinates, your Voidsinger believing them to be possible safe-houses or supply caches but the list was likely to not remain accurate for long.

Nekris focuses on fortifying his outpost, the underwater and underground bunker shored up and reinforced to protect the Cauldron at it's heart. The waters of nearby islands team with patrols of Talons and Stalkers, Gargoyles in both the air and water keeping vigilant watch for anymore potential threats.

The hurricane still rages nearby but the worst of it passing by daybreak, rains and wind raking across the choppy water. Coffins and Cyclops use the cloud and rain cover to search and investigate the environment, Stalkers and Talons chasing down native fauna or rooting up strange plants.

Similarly, Punisher Agona inspects her fortified bunker built into the heart of a sturdy mesa. Walls of dark metal support patrols of Reconstructed, Cyclops and Gargoyles perched atop towers unmindful of the heavy warm rain. Her own survey searches the large moon, mindful to avoid the continuing conflicts of the Stonestar natives. Most of the life on this world seemed to exist below ground, brave Talons crawling into tight passages to flush out bizarre creatures that only moments before looked to be mere stones.

It almost disappointed Agona, the creature of living magma not making an appearance since it had driven off the Ahkam worshipers. The still faithful locals congregating around the altar the beast had manifested at the base of the massive volcano still rumbling and belching flame and lava. When Agona had told the captive Stonestar of the beast it had shown the first signs of excitement since it's capture, claiming it to be a champion of the Lavaborn, the spirit that dwelt in the volcano.
