The whole point of Lovecraft's monsters is that they AREN'T magic. They're just better at physics and science in ways that our puny monkey-minds literally physically cannot handle. There is no magic, no wonder, no god, only an uncaring and incomprehensible cosmos which we understand 0.0001% of, and are wholly dominated by those who understand even 1% of it (Mi-go, Cthulhu, etc.).

Naked savages dancing around Shub-Niggurath fires in worship doesn't make them fantasy any more than cargo cults make real life fantasy.

Fantasy flight is great for low power "scrapping by campaigns". WotC is 3rd edition DnD with all that entails. Saga is closer to 4th ed, and I haven't tried the d6 since I was a kid.

So if you want high power, Jedi crashing star destroyers I'd recommend WotC, if you want to be something else I'd recommend Fantasy Flight

I'd probably recommend going with ffg. Been playimg EotE with my group recently and I feel like it's a really good system.

The plot is going to be that there a rumours bubbling about that a Sith Lord is trying to recruit an apprentice from among the padawans of the Jedi Academy. The players will be assisting their Jedi Knights in investigating the rumours and if they prove to be true, hunting the Sith Lord down and destroying them. When they travel to a certain system and investigate something (details will be ironed out) they will each have a vision of the Sith Lord coming to them and telling them that they are uniquely powerful and have a great deal of potential and that they should become the apprentice, though remain with the Jedi academy until the time is right. If things go right, one or both of them will agree and will not tell the other of their vision (even if they don't agree to it - I'm going to have some Inquisition level bullshittery going on within the Jedi where padawans are being cast out from the academy from a mere hint that they may be turning to the dark side - again, details will be ironed out). The campaign finale will be the padawans confronting the Sith Lord in person and:

If they both denied his offer, they will simply fight the Sith Lord.

If one of them agreed, they will be instructed to prove themselves by killing their friend. If the apprentice is killed, the Sith Lord will flee.

If they both agreed, they will be instructed that the survivor will become the Sith Lord's apprentice.


I figured I'd throw my plot out there to give you guys a better of idea of where I'm going with this.

Past the great hall, the meeting hall and what you guessed to be open offices for the bureaucrats of centuries past was a long hall that opened up to the rock face along an arch. The room had been full of stone bookcases that rose as high as two storeys and, if you ignored the dust and rubble that had accumulated over the past one hundred and fifty years, would make for a good library. “They carried valuable knowledge, particularly when I was younger,” you say. “And it’s difficult to magically store many items – even Maloric only carries his catalysts and travel pack.”

“You could have made an excellent merchant with that bag,” Gnome says, her footsteps light on the stone as she approaches you. “Personally, I’m wondering where somebody as young as you gets one. The knowledge to make these was lost when Markeese was sacked by the Wardens hundreds of years ago.”

Context is key. What's important is what the character /could/ know. In your example, if you were playing a barbarian as an EMT, yeah, you need to roll to see if your barbarian had that knowledge and skill. If you're a wizard who 'knows' moss grows to the north or whatever, I'd make a check to make sure that was true in this setting, but otherwise let it fly because it's relatively common knowledge. And yeah, a ranger knows what wolves eat, even if a player does it.

Because at the speed most melee units run it's faster than shooting. And flamers take a while to kill the stuff that normally wants to get up close and eat your face off. A chainsword is simply faster to draw and mulch an angry Ork brawler with.

It won't. Magic has become all about satisfying Standard now because that is their biggest money maker after casual. Casual market will be satisfied as long as they reprint a shitty Kozilek that casual faggots will think is good.

Expecting Modern-playable cards from MtG sets these days is like expecting deep meaningful literature from 40k novels. They are on two different planes of goals and expectations.

But seriously, how far back am I allowed to go? If we start with the set Unburial Rites is from, we also have Delver and Resto Angel to name a few.

Next block had shockland reprints, skullcrack, abrupt decay, an counterflux.

Theros block saw another reprint in Thoughseize, as well as cards like Anger of the Gods, Ashiok, Eidolon of the Great Revel, and Mana Confluence.

Khans block brought us yet another set of reprints, allowing enemy fetchlands into modern alongside their allied cousins. We also get all three cards I mentioned earlier from this block.

Between those blocks were also a couple core sets, and there were cards from those as well that see modern play. Vryn's Prodigy, Archangel of Thune, painland reprints, Chord of Calling, and various support to push elves and goblins in modern.
